Silas nodded. “Yeah, them. Bossiest motherfuckers I ever had to work for.” He was glad they were at Sing Sing now. Away from the government fucks.
He laughed, too. “Hey, I always try to make a lady feel special. Even if it means makin’ an ass outta myself.” He raised an eyebrow. “Didn’t know people thought your cooking or personality sucks. Don’t know why they’d think that either.”
“That’s true. Everybody around here’s good at something. Contribute what they can, even if it ain’t brains.”
He nodded. “Somethin’ to think about when it gets closer to winter.” He laughed a little when she poked at her baby. “Yeah, you’ll definitely need the space soon enough.”
Silas inclined his head to look at the stairs, surprised that they’d already arrived at the building Rae lived in. “Daytime, stairs ain’t much of a problem. Nighttime? Don’t really trust ‘em in the dark.” He shrugged apologetically. “If you think there’s any murderers in the hall, I’ll go up with you. If not…” He’d go back to his patrol route.
