Rae couldn't help but grin. "Guess it depends on what kind of sick you're feeling," she mused, then paused. "This is the strangest conversation ever. Or at least in the top ten." But it was making her feel better, and she definitely wasn't complaining about that.
She stuffed her hands into her pockets and looked up at him, blinking in surprise when he explained how he'd gotten hurt. "Ouch!" she spoke, not so loud as to call attention to them but loudly enough to convey her surprise. Wide, hazel eyes stayed on him, her slack jaw serving as a punctuation mark for her surprise. "How high up?" Her leg twitched awkwardly as a sympathy pain shot through it.
The docs. Rory. Rae chuckled. "One of those docs is my best friend and I definitely know how hard of a time she can give," she mused, giving him a nod. "All right, you win. No more overstepping my bounds," she raised her hands in surrender and have him a tiny grin. "Though it would be kind of badass of you to beat someone's face in with that cane." She made a thumping motion with her hand and then broke out in a soft chuckle.
Live on a boat. Rae chuckled a little. "A few months ago, back in the city, I had an incident with a boat. Swimmer pulled me right out." She made a tugging motion with her hands to animate it. "But believe it or not, when I was a kid, I used to want to do that. I begged my parents to get a house boat. Because that's totally something an average family can afford." She rolled her eyes. "I was, like... eight? Didn't understand that we couldn't afford it. All I knew was that I wanted a freaking houseboat because it'd be cool to live on the ocean. Bet it's the safest place to live right now." Something that used to be able to be said about Sing Sing. But now... she shook that thought off. "Wait. You live on a boat?"
One side of Rae's mouth tugged up into a grin and she nodded her head. "Okay. It's this way," she pointed toward her apartment, but glanced back at the memorial before they departed, her expression going sad for a brief instant.
Quickly shaking it off, because she had to keep herself level and normal for a little while longer, she turned her attention back to the man beside her, looking up as they walked. It was nice, actually, having to walk a little slower than normal. Less strain on her tired legs. "So, how long have you been around here, anyway?" she asked.
