Kris had spent the better part of the previous day (and this morning) sleeping. He probably should have tested the system out first, before he gave in and allowed himself to sleep. It was reminiscent of long nights at work before everything went to shit, and it made him a little bit wistful for the good old days. Of course, the good old days wouldn't have afforded him the awesome chance to set up an amazing not-quite-internet system that spanned throughout the greater New York City area. How many other people could honestly say that they were that kind of awesome? Not many, that's how many, he thought as he crawled out of his sleeping bag and immediately pulled his laptop out of its bag.
To be honest, he was incredibly surprised that no one had tried to cuff that thing yet. Nowadays, a running laptop that still got full battery life on a solar charge was prime property. It was probably because it never really left Kris' sight, but a skilled enough thief could snag it right from under his nose. He supposed he should count himself lucky. But those were the types of questions that ran through his mind at any given time.
Shaking it off, he grabbed his envelope of computer games, figuring that he deserved a bit of a reward for setting up such an awesome system and flipped through it, finally settling on an ironic classic: Dead Island. Why not laugh in the face of the end of the world by whacking some zombies in the head?, he figured.
He hadn't gotten far into his save file – he was halfway through the first chapter – when he heard footsteps approaching him and turned his head to look at the stranger. A grin crossed his face. "Well, that depends. What do you think it is?" he asked with a little bit of a laugh. The amazement that people usually reacted with when they saw him playing with his laptop never got less entertaining.
