Parvati was getting more comfortable with having Atlas helping around the shop. He had surprised her with his helpfulness a few times, and he seemed quite intuitive about when to leave her alone and when to push her. Now that it had been a few weeks, he was getting bolder about pushing her, about trying to mind her well-being. She appreciated it sometimes, but lately...
Susan Bones had died on Tuesday. She and Susan hadn't exactly been close, but Parvati supposed she had considered the woman a friend. They were friendly, anyway, and Susan had just had a baby. The thought twisted Parvati up inside. She had to admit, it spurred darker thoughts than grief. Parvati had avoided politics and danger best she could for years in India, sunk herself into her studies. But she'd known coming back to London, there was only so much avoiding she could do, and this had hit close to home. Susan hadn't deserved to die at all, and certainly not under attack. Parvati had thought the war was over, had hoped she'd be rejoining a wizarding world that was peaceful and right.
This sparked fear in her, and anxiety was partly why Parvati had begun doing a largely unnecessary round of inventory after Atlas had left that night. But more than afraid, it had left her feeling helpless and restless and frustrated and vengeful. She had wanted to come back to a wizarding world that was peaceful, and that spark of boldness and fight that Parvati had thought had long since gone out led her towards righteous indignation. She wanted to live in a world where she was safe, where her friends didn't die, where there was nothing lurking in the shadows.
It was after ten and she was nearly finished taking inventory of the back room when Parvati heard a banging on the front door. Her sign said closed and everything was locked up, but her lights would still be visible through the windows.
Her breath caught in her chest and she hesitated, but only for a moment before she was heading to the front door. If they were knocking, they weren't trying to be sneaky, so Parvati ignored the panic pounding through her and went to check.
And then immediately waved the wards off and opened the door.
"Seamus? What's going on?" she said in lieu of greeting, concern heavy in her voice. As soon as the questions were out of her mouth, though, she noticed he was carrying a bundle. She cast a quick look up and down the street and then opened the door wider. "Come in, come in."
