Hello? Who: Taini and Open. When: Week 1. Wednesday early morning. Where: Road heading in. What: Hoping to find someone out there, proof there is some hope. But doesn’t want to come across marauding hoards of flesh crazed freaks.
It was unsettling just how truly terrifying silence was. The only noise was that of Taini packing the car she had found keys for in the house she’d been squatting in. She put in three petrol containers. She’d siphoned off the neighbours cars and was hoping it would at least get her in to the city.
She put the box of food in the back and looked up.
“Do you believe her?” Taini asked the woman approaching.
“Well, why should she lie?” Taini from the past replied.
“I don’t know…to keep us from going insane too quick?” She said shrugging as she helped pack the car with everything she hoped she’d need. A first aid kit. Bottles of water. A gun and bullets and a knife or two. Some rope, you never knew, changes of clothes and a couple of mobile phones she’d found in various houses. She also had a wad of cash on her. She knew it wouldn’t be useful, the world had pretty much ended. But some people may still value it.
“Here…found these.” The girl from the past replied. Only a few minutes younger though.
“What’s this?” Taini said putting the gun in to the glove compartment.
“Just what I found…” She replied.
“You mean you stole a bunch of jewellery.” She said taking them and putting them in to a bag and in to the glove compartment.
“Look…the people from the houses are probably dead. They wont be using it and we may have to bargain with people.” She continued.
“If there are any people.” She pointed out.
“Yeah.” She said with a heavy sigh. “Y’know…I haven’t even seen a pack of wild dogs running around…I’ve actually not seen any animals. There’s not even birds singing…I…I mean…are all the animals gone too?”
“How the hell should I know? I’m only a few minutes ahead of you.” Taini said shrugging.
“Yeah…yeah…how long do I have left?” She asked curiously.
Taini looked to her watch, “I’d say ten more minutes, you can help me get this packed up and then we’ll hopefully get in to the city in an hour.” She answered and then gave a rather hysterical laugh, “What am I thinking…there’s no traffic!” She smiled with a nod, “It’ll take half the time.”
“Y’know…this sorta gives a whole new meaning to the term, talking to yourself Taini.”
“I agree whole heartedly Taini.” Said as she closed the door.
“It’s all so sad isn’t it?” Taini replied looking to the neighbours yard. “…there were kids here…” She said eyeing the trampoline and bike.
“Hey…we didn’t start this and they certainly ended it! I’m not giving humans any sympathy.” Taini replied as she tied the items on the roof down to the roof wrack.
“Yes you do. You’re not heartless, you’re just scared.” She replied.
“Of course I’m scared! Stop being blunt. If I want to fool myself I can.” She pouted.
“You can’t while I’m here to talk back.” She replied as she checked the toiletries bag, “Right, plenty of the Pill…some sanitary towels and tampons…shampoo, soap, toothpaste and razors.”
“Lots of razors?” Taini asked.
“Lots and lots of razors. Wont have to be hairy or stinky.” Taini replied to herself. “Right, one last box and we’re ready I think.”
Soon the car was packed and Taini had left her squat behind her. She wasn’t driving too fast. She was looking in to the cars, on the road side for any movement. Sighing after a while spotting no signs of life she slipped a CD in to the player and turned it up. The silence was getting to her. It played White Rabbit. “One pill makes you larger and one pill makes you small…” She sung tapping her thumb on the wheel.
“Poor Alice….when she was just small…” Taini sang out turning up the music and nodded her head to the music when she screeched the car to a halt and stared at the middle of the road. She spotted movement. She turned off the CD player and grabbed her gun and stepped out of the car so she could get a better view. It was behind an abandoned car. Damnit. She couldn’t duplicate herself again for twenty four hours!
She had to work on that.
She stepped forward, "H-hello?" Gun held in her hands waiting menacingly.
