Ginny Weasley adjusted her right shin guard.

It was snowing outside. Of course it was. It was the middle of December, the week of the Harpies' last match of the year, and the entire town of Holyhead was covered in white — it wasn't knee-deep, it wasn't even foot-deep, but it was snow, anyway, iced water flakes, slippery and dangerous, and she knew for a fact that the schools had been closed.

It never really mattered to her, the schools being closed. Hogwarts was a castle; she didn't have to go to great lengths to get to her classes. It was one of those things; you lived with it.

Of course, living with it was a great deal better than living against it.

"You get the one day free," Gertie Hall, one of the beaters, was muttering to Ginny's right as she put on and buttoned up an extra-thick cape. "You get the one morning to spend with your boy, because his father has him on weekends, and you spend it training in the middle of a bloody winter wonderland for a sodding match that we're not even gonna win."

"That's the spirit", their Captain said mockingly, entering the dressing rooms at that precise moment. "I don't have to tell you again that if you think we are going to lose, we fucking well are going to lose."

The team groaned.

"Where is our pride?" she began, slowly raising her voice. "Where is our shame?"

"Where is our money?" Gertie whispered, and the Captain sent her a cold glare.

"Hall", the Captain said. Gertie straightened herself up.

"Yes, Captain?"

"Go home with your kid", the Captain said, losing her facade. "We can win this match with our eyes closed."

Gertie took about .02 seconds to get her cape undone and Apparate home. She didn't even say goodbye, which wasn't new to Ginny; after all, Gertie could not wait to spend time with her little boy. A boy of seven years old who was the most adorable thing and sort of brought out Ginny's maternal instinct every time Gertie brought him to their matches.†

It interferred with her Quidditch a lot, nevertheless. Sometimes, Ginny thought that perhaps she would like to have a child, too. Her relationship with Harry would have turned out like that; a whole army of little kids to compensate for Harry's lost childhood and make her mother happy.

They were almost married, too, and Ginny sometimes wallowed in the misery of having had their compromise announced and broken within a month, but it had been a fair few years ago, now, and she shouldn't. She didn't feel pain over it anymore. It had been a mutual decision — the kind of mutual decision stable people took, Ginny had thought with a pang of pride at the time, for being so mature, for keeping herself in check at the tender age of twenty — and it made sense. Being in common space, fighting Death Eaters together, Harry so close to her family — surely the closeness had brought on many of their feelings, and perhaps the celebrity crush — perhaps they ought to give themselves a break and think about it for a while, think about what they really had, what they really felt for each other, regardless of wars and protectiveness and following the course of things.†

Ron and Hermione had married, and Ginny had thought perhaps Harry would come to his senses, being best man and maid of honour, obviously belonging to the same table at the reception; to make conversation and kiss as was traditional— but Harry had showed up with a date, some blonde girl from his year at Hogwarts whose name Ginny couldn't remember, and Ginny had left sooner than was expected of her.†Hermione had been worried about her, and if she hadn't been so certain that she was going to start crying†in the middle of Harry's toast, Ginny would not have excused herself at all.

Hermione's mother had gone over to their kitchen and reached out to hug her. It was odd that a Muggle woman had been Ginny's shoulder to cry on over the loss of whom she had thought to be her future husband, at Hermione's wedding of all places, but so things happened, and so life happened, and it could not be changed.

She'd taken the Quidditch position the next day. The Harpies had been bugging her about how it was all meant to be — her being called Ginevra and their having recently lost a Seeker to motherhood, and it all came down to the same thing — and Ginny had decided that Quidditch would take her mind off things.

Only she was extremely good at it, now, had got much better than she used to be, and she thought on her broom more than she thought on her feet. At any rate, she was still there, in the town of Holyhead, which was covered in snow, and school had been suspended, and it was four years later, and she was happy.

A hand tapping on her shoulder snapped her out of her train of thoughts.

"Yes?" she asked, and turned back to see Gabby Myles smiling up at her.

"We're heading out for a pint and an ego boost, want to come?"

Ginny realised that the dressing room had practically cleared out. Her teammates did certainly not waste time on any aspect of their lives. Perhaps she should start asking them for advice.

"Sure", Ginny said, taking off her right shin guard.

*

Not so fast.

*

"Hell, you girls are quick", the Captain said, looking around the dressing room and raising an eyebrow. "Does anyone here know any blondes? 'Cause there's this… person out on the pitch looking for… Clown Frogs or something on the goalposts, and I promised myself†that I wouldn't upset any of you since I'm always the one you come to whining."

The girls listened and promptly ignored her in favour of continuing to gather their things.

"Harpies!" the Captain yelled.

It caused a shiver through the team.

"Clown Frogs on goalposts, anyone? Is this an inside joke? Am I not getting it? Does—" and she began to enunciate her words, "—anyone know of a person who would be looking for—"

Ginny frowned.

"—Clown Frogs?"†

"Clown frogs?" Ginny asked.

"I don't know. Some sort of green creature? She speaks very quietly."

And so the voice of the blonde girl came ringing through Ginny's, and the entire team's ears, because the blonde girl was standing just outside the open door to their dressing room.

"Would anyone let me borrow a broomstick? I need an extra one to sweep off the shadows so the frogpies will come out", the girl said, matter-of-factly.

Ginny dropped her own broomstick, which she hadn't realised she was holding at all, and felt her mouth contort into what was very possibly a frighteningly big grin.

"Loony!" she said, easily, because at this point it was an affectionate nickname more than anything else, and walked up to greet her with a hug. "What are you doing here?"

Luna frowned. "Oh, she didn't tell you?" she asked quietly, pointing her head at the Captain of the Holyhead Harpies. "I'm seeking a strange breed of Clawed Frogpies. I got an anonymous tip saying they'd seen some here."

"In the goalposts?" the Captain asked incredulously. Luna looked at her the way someone looks at you when you ask a question that has already been answered. Ginny contained the amused chuckle that threatened to get out of her throat.

"Oh, no", Luna said. "Around the pitch, of course. During one of your matches."

"Of course", the Captain said, raising an eyebrow. The team had obviously heard enough and they were not interested; or the prospect of a Butterbeer was more appealing at this time of day, anyhow; and they promptly left, not without telling Ginny that she could find them at the Red Lion pub —and despite what you may believe, most of them had not been Gryffindors, or even attended Hogwarts at all— a few blocks from there, whenever she was done with… her.

But her was Loony Lovegood, and Ginny was not about to leave Loony Lovegood there to look for Frogpies on her own.

"We need to catch up", Ginny said, adjusting her Muggle coat in case Luna wanted to rummage through the entire town in her search. "I heard about that rare flower you discovered in Algeria. Or, read about it in†the paper, anyhow."

Luna made a humming sound and skipped forward twice in†the snow.

Ginny shook her head and smiled.

*

They didn't find the clawed frogpies. Luna said it was a bad time of the day to look for them (it was noon) and she'd go back later, when the sun was coming down.†

Ginny took Luna to her apartment.

*

"They use the shadows as coats, you see", Luna was saying as she sipped her tea, "so it's easier to find them where there are many shadows, because there are many of them around, and all you have to do is sweep the shadow off and there they are." She took a bite of a biscuit from the plate Ginny had set on the centre of the table. Her mother had sent the whole thing that week, silverware included. Her parents had had a television installed for their anniversary, and, after overdosing on American college drama, her mother had decided that Ginny was not too old for 'care packages', as they called those things.
†
Ginny thought it was silly, really, as she slept over at the Burrow most days and she was twenty-four, but they were very good, very homemade biscuits, so she saw no reason to complain.†

"When was the last time you ate?" Ginny asked, very seriously, when she noticed how Luna's collarbone stuck out. She hadn't seemed so thin with the hundreds of layers she'd had on when she was looking for the frogs.

Luna smiled. "Rolf made this lovely dinner for me. Lots of fruit arranged to look like… a rose, I think. He's very sweet."

Ginny didn't know who Rolf was. "And when was that?"

Luna pondered this. "Two days ago, perhaps? Before the explosion."

"The… explosion?" Ginny questioned tentatively.

"Yes", Luna said. "He wanted to propose, see, and he had been working on these fireworks, and it went wrong because I didn't say yes."

Ginny really didn't know who Rolf was, but apparently Luna and he lived together and he had proposed to her. Then she thought over what Luna had said, and realised that her house had exploded two days ago, and how could Luna so calm through this whole thing? "What happened?" she squeaked. "Are you all right?"

Luna looked up at her. "Of course."

"And… Rolf?"

"Oh, he's at St Mungo's. Something fell on his arm, I think, but mostly he's okay. The fireworks are designed as to not hurt people. They were very pretty, really, he did a lovely job. Only then the house exploded and I couldn't see the rest of it, but I'm sure it would have been beautiful."

"Shouldn't you be at St Mungo's with him?" Ginny asked.

"He said I shouldn't", Luna said matter-of-factly. "He said we should… think about it. Because I told him I'd think about it. When he proposed, I mean."

Ginny shook her head and smiled.

"Oh, Luna", she said, and she went to hug her.

*

Ginny accompanied her to sweep off shadows round the goalposts on the Harpies pitch, and they found nothing. Still, the company was good. Like a little piece of Ginny had been restored with Luna, because… well, maybe she missed her old life. The one where her future was figured out, as long as You-Know-Who was defeated. Ginny was still friends with Hermione, saw her often enough, and she had a cordial relationship with Harry, but it was — it wasn't the same at all.

Still, the company was good.

She used the Floo network to take Luna to the Burrow while her house was in ruins and Rolf was uncomfortable around her, and Ginny's mother took to her like an old friend, which was nice, because she was.

*

Ginny stayed at the Burrow, too, because it was an inertial thing by now, and Apparated†to Quidditch practice along with Luna, and the Captain told Luna to keep quiet and not interfere with their game.

Luna made a humming sound and skipped forward twice in the snow.

*

Three days, and they still couldn't find the frogpies.

"Maybe it's this weather", Luna said. "The snow. Maybe it's all so white that they feel threatened."

"Why would you think that?" Ginny said, sipping her tea. It was seven in the morning, and she had a match against the Cannons at night. It was the single most boring match of the season, but it was still a match†she had to go to, fully trained and in high spirits. Otherwise, the Captain might kill her. She was married to the Cannons' Seeker, and apparently beating his team at Quidditch was the only way to get him to do house chores.

Ginny had supported this purpose wholeheartedly every year, and she wasn't about to stop because she had Luna Lovegood practically living at her apartment and going along with her routine. She had even invited Luna to see the match. Luna sort of fitted right in, Ginny supposed.

"Well", Luna said, "Rolf and I planned on coming here together, but the weather was mostly rainy. Frogpies come out in the rain, you know. But the snow is very cold so perhaps they are not strong enough for it. And sometimes it is sunny, too, when it snows, and frogpies do not like clear skies, see."

"Ah", Ginny said, not really seeing it. "So what was this whole thing about Rolf, then?"

"Rolf?" Luna asked. Ginny nodded. "Well, he's a creature-searcher, like me."

"You mean a naturalist", Ginny said.

Luna shrugged and took a bite of her toast. "He has a laboratory at the house that exploded, so we moved in together to study the flowers we found in Algeria. He's a lovely friend."

"But he proposed", Ginny said.

"Oh", Luna said, "that."

"Why did he propose, Luna?" Ginny asked.

"We also shared a bed", Luna said wistfully. Ginny raised an eyebrow. "But there was only one, and he was rather warm. I don't know if that might have led him to assume anything."

"Did you have sex with him?" Ginny asked. She wanted to know. She wanted to know this for the very simple reason that Luna had received a marriage proposal from a man who may or may have not have been as sane as she was, and it made no sense whatsoever if Luna hadn't had sex with him beside sharing his bed.

"I…" Luna began, pondering this. "I suppose I did, yes."

For some reason, the fact that Luna had had sex with someone baffled Ginny to no end. Perhaps because Luna seemed so fragile, and childlike, and so different from everyone, that Ginny had figured it was not the sort of thing she did.

"Oh, Loony", Ginny said. "So are you going to marry him?"

"I'm not sure he would like that", Luna said, wrinkling her nose. "He didn't take it very well when I told him I had to ask my friend Lisa first."

"Lisa Turpin?"†

"Yes", Luna said quietly.

"What does Lisa have to do with any of this?"

Luna shrugged.

*

Lisa, as a matter of fact, called Ginny that very afternoon, while Luna was off wherever she was looking for those slippery frogpies now.

"Oh, Ginny, thank goodness", Lisa said when the fire calmed down. "Is Luna there?"

"Not at the moment", Ginny said. Lisa sighed in — relief? — relief. "She'll be back in a couple of hours, though. You can call then."

"No!" Lisa said quickly. "No, I mean. Can you pass on a message?"†

"Er, sure?", Ginny said with a frown.

"Oh, thank goodness. Can you tell her that she should marry Rolf? He really loves her, and he broke a lot of bones in his arm and — I love her too, of course, but it's not the same."

"What do you mean 'you love her too'?" Ginny asked, feeling really stupid.

"I mean, I love her too. Or, loved her. I don't know. But I'm in love with my husband, and I can't go on affairing with her all over the place while I'm married. And in love with my husband", she repeated.

"You…" Ginny began, confusion showing surely on her face.

"Will you just tell her that? Thank you, Ginny, I really appreciate it."

That was bizarre, Ginny thought to herself.

*

So they were sitting at the table now, in the Burrow, having dinner by themselves because her parents had already gone to bed and Luna took more time on the frogpie hunt than usual, but still Ginny had her habits, like sleeping in her old childhood bed before matches.

Sometimes she wondered what her habit would be if she had married Harry, but it was mostly out of curiosity.

"Do you— do you like girls?" she asked Luna.

Ginny had never thought of that. For all the dates gone wrong she'd had in the past four years, she had never thought to try dating, or kissing, or anything-ing a girl. Since the conversation with Lisa earlier that day, she had been wondering if she hadn't missed some major step in life, like what they did in those TV shows her mother had taken to watching — how they experimented to see if they liked that. Ginny had had Harry, and then she had not, but she'd followed the course, and she was twenty-four and she hadn't had a steady boyfriend in four years, while Harry had actually moved in with Hannah Abbott recently and she was expecting their first child.

Ginny felt like a piece of her puzzle was missing.

"Of course", Luna said.

"But do you like girls like you… like you liked Lisa Turpin?" Ginny asked.

"Not all of them", Luna said matter-of-factly. "Just like I don't like all boys like I liked Rolf."

"Oh", Ginny said.

"I like you, though", Luna went on. "I've always liked you like I liked Lisa Turpin." She took a sip of her pumpkin juice, like you just told a girl you liked her and it didn't matter at all, and went on eating. If Ginny thought of it, though, Luna probably did that often. She was blunt, but it was difficult to think of her as anything bad because she was so dreamy about the whole thing. Actually, now that Ginny thought about it, Luna had actually been having two relationships at the same time, one of them with a married woman. Loony Lovegood, of all people, had twenty times as much sex as Ginny, Hogwarts heartthrob and star Quidditch player, did.†

It really, really baffled Ginny, but now, looking at Luna, it baffled her a little less. Luna was already wearing her pyjamas, and her long, blond hair was up in a ponytail, and her skin was pale and really rather perfect. Ginny hadn't really seen her before that week since Ron and Hermione's wedding, and even then it had been a rather fleeting visit.†

Luna had grown up. Luna was twenty-four years old and Luna looked twenty-four years old and Luna was one of the most confident people Ginny had ever met, in that bizarre way of hers. That probably held some appeal for certain people.

Ginny blinked, realising that she'd been staring a bit.

"I don't mind if you look at me", Luna said softly.

Ginny's noncommittal grunt was muffled by the mouthful of mashed potatoes she'd just stuck in her mouth.

*

Ginny Weasley adjusted her right shin guard.

The snow had melted. The pitch had been cleaned by professional caretakers, and the sun was setting outside. It was still really bloody cold, of course, it was the middle of December, but nevertheless Ginny was slightly more relaxed than usual. It had nothing to do with their rivals, not really; in her four years as a Holyhead Harpy, she'd worried about perhaps three or four matches. She was competitive and somewhat proud, yes, but she was also very confident on a broomstick, and never felt better than when she was flying and looking around for the Snitch.†

Her personal life, however, sometimes got in the way of her complete calmness. Hermione's wedding, for instance, had — well, it hadn't lost her a single match, if anything she had tried harder to show everyone that she did not need any time off to think, thank you very much, but she had been quite worn out. She ended up crying alone most nights, which was perhaps why she'd taken to Apparating back home in the first place. At home there were her brothers, most of the time, and she felt more like one of them; more like someone who did not cry in any situation, who could overcome everything.

Today, well — today she felt she could.†

*

They won, as usual. The Captain gave them her usual Cannons speech, the one about feminism and how this match meant more than anything else because not only were they playing against some men, they were playing against the sort of men who were husbands to them.†

The Captain tended to moralise like that.

And then Ginny — Ginny gave herself entirely to flying. She kept flying and flying, and she wasn't tired. She was high on adrenaline. She was high on life. The Snitch could have been in the very opposite end of the pitch and she would have seen it and grabbed it easily, and as it happened, all her flying distracted the Captain's husband rather a lot, not that there was much of a need for it.†

It was a terribly boring match, but Ginny was having her fun in it.

When her teammates went out to celebrate at the Red Lion, Ginny turned them down, faced their raised eyebrows for the one second, and Apparated home. Home to her apartment, to her boring, rented, still half-furnished apartment with her mother's biscuits, tray and all, on the wooden table in the kitchen, and the yellowish wallpaper that had once been light pink.

She took off her coat and her trainers. Her socks, too, after a second. The rug was soft under her bare feet. She liked that.

Luna was standing in front of it, looking at it, but she turned around when she heard Ginny knock a vase of flowers in the foyer.†

"Oh", Luna sing-songed, "I suppose you won."†

Ginny chuckled. "I shouldn't tell you, since you were not there. I thought I invited you."

"Of course", Luna said. "I know you won, though. You have that grin about you. I always noticed that when we were in school."

"That I had a — grin about me?" Ginny asked, confused. The adrenaline was starting to wear off a bit.

"Yes", Luna answered matter-of-factly. "That sort of — aura, as though you're about to smile. It's lovely."

Ginny walked up to her, and Luna clearly had no concept of personal space at all, because she did not walk back against the wall, as Ginny had been expecting, so Ginny had to grab her shoulders and pin her to it, enclosing her between herself, the wall, and the bookshelf in the corner.

Luna smiled softly. "See? That is it. Your eyes are all lit up", she said, observing her eyes attentively, not even paying attention to the fact that Ginny was holding her by the shoulders. "Oh", she said then, looking at Ginny's parallel softly-smiling mouth. "You're—" she began, parting her lips, and Ginny leaned in to kiss her.

It felt — rather odd, to be kissing Loony Lovegood. Her mouth was hot and tasted like green tea, as though she'd just had a cup of it. Ginny thought for a moment that Luna might stay there calmly till Ginny broke the kiss, but Luna was kissing her back, and the thing was — the thing was Luna was humming through her nose as she did. That was rather odd, too, but Ginny found that she liked it. It made everything a little more surreal and grounded at the same time, somehow.†

Ginny stepped back, and Luna was looking at her wide-eyed and open-mouthed. It was a sight to behold. "That's okay", Luna observed. "Will you be mad if I do the same?"

Ginny promptly shook her head, perhaps out of inertia, perhaps out of utter astonishment, but now Luna was kissing her, and now Luna's hands were brushing her arms almost ghostly, and Ginny really didn't want to think at all.†

Instead, she let herself feel the way Luna reached out to tangle Ginny's hair around her fingers, caressing her head like a massage and leaving a trail of kisses down her cheeks, round to her ear, down her neck. It was soft, the lightest of touches, and Ginny thought that wouldn't do. That wouldn't do at all. When Luna's mouth was about to reach Ginny's collarbone, Ginny pushed her softly away and reached down to grab the hem of Luna's long-sleeved dress, tugging it over her head with no preamble. Luna's hair fell down over her shoulders lightly, almost as if it were flying, over her bare chest.†

Ginny quickly took off her own sweater, and pulled Luna's hair back behind her head, forming a ponytail with her fingers before releasing it and capturing Luna's half-open mouth in another kiss. Luna seemed perfectly comfortable when Ginny reached out to cup her breasts tentatively. That was also rather odd, Ginny thought, but then the one who had gone without sex for so long was herself, not Luna. Experimentally, she pinched both her nipples at the same time, and smiled delighted at the gasp it brought from Luna's mouth, and the way Luna was breathing erratically now, not unlike herself; the way she rocked her hips very softly, like a sort of dance that didn't even look sexual at all.

It was rather odd, to see Loony Lovegood like this, letting out breathy moans in intervals, barely trying to reach her own lower lip to bite it, but much too affected to actually close her mouth; the heat her body gave off.

Ginny felt a sort of surprise when she realised Luna had unclasped Ginny's bra and was steadily sliding it off her arms, not bothering to finish with it before bending her knees and capturing one of Ginny's nipples between her lips, nibbling at it while she pinched the other till it had hardened.

Ginny was so distracted by this development of events that she was rather astonished when she found that their positions had been reversed and she was standing back against the wall, the yellowish wallpaper almost scratching her skin, and Luna was kneeling down in front of her, placing kisses down her belly while she graciously unbuttoned and unzipped Ginny's jeans without making any sound at all, just the brush of them and Ginny's knickers sliding down against her skin.

Then Luna's nose was brushing her mound, and Ginny let her eyes close and her head drop back against the wall. She was breathing heavily now; she was barely holding on to the side wall of the bookshelf and Luna’s hair; she was moaning loudly now, as Luna slid two fingers inside her and spread her folds out to lick Ginny's cunt like it was totally normal to cut to the chase like that.

Well, it probably was for Luna, Ginny thought. Maybe her crazy head had never caught on—

"Oh fuck", she squeaked when Luna sucked on her clit, and Luna looked up at her, her fingers still moving in and out, her thumb replacing her tongue on Ginny's clit, and she smiled. Ginny chuckled nervously, knocking her head against the wall sort of painfully when Luna began to lick her cunt again.

It didn't take very long for Ginny to gasp out a string of curse words and come, her body giving out under her, the traitor. She slid down to the rugged floor, feeling sort of glad that she had cast a few cleaning spells round the house that very morning, because she could barely move, and it was the oddest thought to have right now, and Ginny couldn't help but chuckle a bit.†

Luna was still kneeling down in front of her, observing her with a certain curiosity, an almost smile, as Ginny kept trying to recover her breath.

Soon enough, Ginny recovered her ability to think, and possibly also her eyesight, because it was only then that she realised that one of the reasons why she could barely move was that her jeans were around her ankles. She debated whether she should put them on or not, but quickly decided against it — too much work — and tugged them off her feet instead, threw them in the direction of the armchair, didn't look to see if they'd fallen on it or off.†

She got up to her feet instead, pulling Luna up with her, and guided her backwards to the couch. Luna fell back down on it as though she was weightless. She had begun to eat properly again, though, Ginny made sure of that; her collarbone was sticking a bit less now. It hadn't been that much to start with, Ginny thought for a very brief second, then climbed over Luna herself till she was face to face with her, and leaned down to kiss her.

She had almost forgotten what someone else's mouth tasted like after doing what Luna had just done, and remembered that Luna was — quiet, really, not quite panting but almost, still rocking her hips softly beneath her.

Ginny reached between their bodies and stuck a hand inside Luna's knickers.†

Luna's cunt was extremely warm, and the soft cotton of her knickers was absolutely soaked through, Ginny noted fleetingly. She slid her fingers inside her, one by one, till four of them were inside and she didn't even have to move them, because Luna kept that rocking of hers and was doing all the work herself. She still couldn't quite bite her lip, so Ginny did it for her while she circled Luna's clit with her thumb.

There was nothing odd about that. Before long, Luna stilled and let out a long, deep sigh, almost like meowing.†

Ginny buried her face in Luna's neck and removed her hand, letting it rest on Luna's hips. The adrenaline had completely worn off, and she fell asleep.

*

When Ginny woke up, Luna was making crepes. Ginny rubbed her eyes and noticed that she was covered by a night gown that she didn't recognise, and assumed it was Luna's. She promptly slid it on and walked towards the kitchen.

"Do you usually have crepes for breakfast?"

Luna shrugged. "Usually enough."

"Oh, Luna", Ginny said with a chuckle, shaking her head, and she went to help her with breakfast.

That was lovely. I really liked your Luna - wonderfully loony without quite being completely insane. Very nice job! :)
