Halloween Gift to Iselima
Gift for: iselima
From: kelly_chambliss
Title: On Silent Haunches
Pairing: Wilhelmina Grubbly-Plank/Minerva McGonagall
Rating: PG
Summary: On Hallowe'en, Wilhelmina waits.
Notes: iselima, I was so pleased to write for you! You asked for "femmeslash, autumn fog and chill, Samhain, eery places (like the Forbidden Forest or a deserted castle)," and I got in as many as I could. My grateful thanks to that best of betas, therealsnape. Thanks, too, to the excellent mods. Love this fest.
The title comes from Carl Sandburg's poem "Fog".
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
It starts as a wisp of vapour from somewhere deep in the Forbidden Forest, seeping smoke-like through the trees, gathering substance and depth, swirling thicker, faster, until the whole of the Hogwarts grounds seems adrift in the sinuous Samhain fog.
Shrouded shapes twist through the murk--spirits liberated from graves--and Wilhelmina is grateful that the children are all snug in the castle; they might find the strangeness frightening.
To her, though, the shifting forms hold no terrors. They have come to ride her thestrals, which are ready on this hallowed eve to ferry the freed souls of Samhain wherever their journeys take them.
Wilhelmina's journey is shorter: only to the great oak doors that guard the entrance to the school. A thestral accompanies her along the path, then fades away as she stops at the castle steps to wait for the Hallowe'en feast to end. For her lover to slip out to join her.
The fog draws in, chill tendrils sliding like ghostly fingers against her cheek, until even Wilhelmina's stalwart heart shivers in the unworldly ether.
Then a sudden current eddies the mist. Minerva is there, solid and sharp-edged, and Wilhelmina's world is right and real once more.
