Festlist User's Manual: How to Find Things with Tags
Hi everyone!
To make things a bit easier on those coming to our site for the first time, your friendly mods have put together a sort of user's manual for the site. Being able to find what you want is obviously an issue of importance, so it gets a page and a tag to itself. If you have any questions about navigating the site that are not answered here, please comment on this post or drop us an email at

We'll answer your question, and if necessary fix things, as soon as we can. Feedback is welcome, please do not be shy!

Navigation How-To
Since we assume most of you will be looking for specific fests or types of fest, the navigation system we've put together is rather detailed. However, this also makes things more complex, and we don't want make it harder for you to find what you want. So here are the basics for navigating the site, in case it's not making sense to you in your browsing.
Using Tags
The most basic thing is this: almost everything is organized by tags. That long list of tags at the left is where to look for what you want. It is organized by fest status and category, and everything that gets posted here is labelled with at least one (usually more) of the tags in the list. This is why posting rights are restricted and everything is moderated: we need to make sure everything is tagged properly or the post will quickly be for all practical purposes lost in the shuffle.
The tags themselves should be pretty self-explanatory, and everything is cross-linked where appropriate. If you want a fest centered on Sirius Black, click his name in the "character" list. You'll get every post for a fest having to do with Sirius, including all pairings, themes, types, etc. If you want a holiday fest, click the appropriate tag under "theme" to get a list of all the holiday-fest posts. You get the idea.
Clicking the category tag for a given category (the one heading the list of sub-categories, e.g. "character") will take you to the masterlist or masterlists for that category, as well as any posts having to do with that category in a general way. It will not take you to a list of all the posts having to do with every character - every fest has to do with some character or characters in some way, and so the list would be too long to navigate easily. This is why we have masterlists.
Using Masterlists
Under the "0: masterlist" tag you will find all the masterlists of fests. There is the Master-Masterlist of course, which includes every fest mentioned on the site. Each category, and for some categories each sub-category, also has its own masterlist. If you do not have a specific idea of what you're looking for, or can't find an appropriate tag to click, we recommend you use these masterlists for browsing. They are all arranged alphabetically by fest name, and if the key features of a given fest are not made explicit in the name there will be a short note describing the fest.
Every fest we list will have its own post, including tags for fest status, character, pairing, genre, theme, season of posting, media, and type. It will also be listed on both the Master-Masterlist and whatever specific masterlists are appropriate.
Genre
All fests are organized by broad genres, each with its own masterlist:
Femmeslash (including all-female threesomes/moresomes)
Gen
Het (including threesomes/moresomes involving multiple genders)
Multiple (fests which may involve fic and/or art in multiple genres; most of the single-character-based fests will be here)
Other/miscellaneous (fests that don’t fit neatly into the other categories – creaturefic/bestialityfic, for example)
Slash (including all-male threesomes/moresomes)
Media
All fests will be in one – and only one – sub-category based on the media used. Art-only fests will be tagged “art,” fic-only fests will be tagged “fic,” and fests accepting either/both art and fic will of course be tagged “art and fic.” Many fests fit into the latter category, so if you don’t see your fest under “art” or “fic” try looking there.
Pairing
Fests focusing on particular pairings (including threesomes/moresomes) rather than on a single character get appropriate tags. If there is a defined group of three or more characters around various pairings of whom multiple fests are centered, there will also be a group tag under the “pairing” list linking to all pairing-related fests involving two or more of those characters. For example, the “marauders” tag under “pairings” will include all fests in which two or more marauders are in the main pairing/s – James/Remus, Remus/Sirius, James/Peter/Remus/Sirius, etc.
Note that the group tags under “character” are not the same as the group tags under “pairing;” the latter will only take you to fests organized around group-specific pairings, while the former will also include single-character fests and fests in which only one member of the group is in the main pair (e.g. “marauders” under “character” would include all Marauders-pairings, single-character fests around one of the Marauders, and fests in which a Marauder is paired with a non-Marauder).
“Multiple” will take you to fests involving multiple main pairings; “rarepair” will take you to all the posts having to do with rarepairs in general and whatever specific rarepair fests are listed on the site (e.g. if Poppy/Severus and Argus/Severus fests were added to the list, both would likely be tagged “rarepair” as well as with the specific pairings).
A Note on Pairing Names
In order to avoid confusion and doubling-up in tags and on masterlists, all pairing names are always organized alphabetically by character - for example, the character in a given pairing whose name starts with "b" will always go before the slash when paired with characters whose names start with anything between "c" and "z." Thus "Bill/Harry," never "Harry/Bill." When two or more characters whose names have the same first letter are paired, it will be alphabetical by the second letter, and so on (e.g. "Bathsheba/Bill"). Characters' first names are also used most of the time; last names will be included where appropriate to avoid confusion. (For example, should a fest involving Harry's daughter Lily be added, all mentions of Lily will be altered to include either "Evans," for Harry's mother, or "Potter," for his daughter.)
Season
All fests are also organized according to when they start their reveals or public postings. Fall fests have reveals between September 1 and November 30; Winter between December 1 and February 28/29, Spring between March 1 and May 31, and Summer between June 1 and August 31. The Severus Big Bang Birthday Bash (January 9 posting date) is for example a Winter fest.
Status
“Recurring” fests are fests that have already finished at least one round and will continue being held annually (or according to whatever specific other time period) for the foreseeable future. An example would be hds_beltane, now that it has been revived. “Past” fests are fests that have been held in the past (once or multiple times) and are now defunct, but whose material is still available on the original site/archive hosting the fest. Fests that are underway but have not yet finished their first round of posting/reveals are considered “new.” If there are indications after the first reveals are over that the fest will be held again it will be retagged “recurring;” if not it will be retagged “past.”
Theme
In addition to or instead of particular characters or pairings, some fests are centered on certain themes. An example of a non-character-oriented theme fest would be the Memory Room fest: each round centers on a different character, but always with the theme of thoughts and memories. Popular themes for fests include holiday fests, fests for the birthdays of the focal characters, smut fests, and so on.
Type
In addition to theme some fests are organized around specific rules and/or modes of operation used by multiple fests (some explicitly setting themselves up according to the models of other fests, and adopting their terminology and/or rules). For example, the term “Big Bang” was originally used for a particular Draco/Harry fest, but other fests copied certain rules and the name, and hence the “Big Bang” became an established type of fest. Fic exchange would be a more general type of fest. The tag “multiple/other” under “type” takes you to those fests that, like the Riddle Gifts fest, have different sections with different rules.
