Who. Dahlia and Ian.
When. December 30th, 9 AM.
Where. Vic's.
What. Just a little breakfast between friends.
Warning. None.
Their ride to Vic's had been mostly in silence, just as Dahlia expected it to be. Ian was running on two hours of sleep, and even on a good day he was basically a zombie before he had his morning coffee. She was perfectly content to listen to the radio and pet Lucy, who sat quietly at her feet. There was no point in trying to make small talk just yet, so Dahlia saved that for when Ian got his hands on the coffee he needed to be a productive human being.
Once inside, the two of them settled into a booth and ordered their breakfast and coffee. "You seem even more stoic than usual," she told him only half teasingly, thanking the waitress when she brought out the requested coffees. "Any particular reason you didn't sleep well?" They hadn't been together in nearly two years, but they were still friends. She worried about Ian more than she probably should have. He was always so secretive about everything and even after having been together for seven months, Dahlia had barely learned anything about him. It was one of the reasons they split up, actually.
"I'm not going to pry," she assured him before he could say anything about her being nosy. "I just want to hear that you're taking care of yourself is all. You forget to do that sometimes." A beat of silence passed as she skimmed the table with her fingers to find the creamer. When she did, she tore it open and poured it in the coffee, stirring it with practiced ease. "Or, you know, all the time."
Dahlia reached down to the dog at her feet and gave her a friendly pat between the ears for good measure. The agency had gone on and on about being sure not to give Lucy attention that she didn't need and not to let strangers dote on her, but thus far Dahlia hadn't had any kind of problems with her. She was still a perfect seeing eye dog; she was just a little spoiled.
