In the Library [open]
Oddly enough, the only reason Severus had never troubled himself with the study of photographic development potions before was he couldn't afford a camera. Well, that and the fact that he was so ugly, he wouldn't want to develop pictures of himself, regardless. The theory behind the potions, however, was fascinating.
Muggles, he knew, accomplished all the same effects by technological means: different speeds and types of film, flashes, lens lengths and apertures, high-pass and low-pass light filters, different intensities and angles of lighting, f-stops (whatever those were), and things of that nature. But wizards did it all with the potions, and potions were something he understood -- intimately, as it were.
One species of flower petal was used for black and white photography, another for colors, and yet another to emphasise reds over greens or blues over yellows. Clear insect wings produced crisp photographs; opaque wings led to softer lines in images; colored wings would filter out one wavelength of light altogether; multi-coloured wings would produce a photo that was black and white, apart from one colour or a few select colours.
He could hardly wait to try out some of these brews, and he wondered if he couldn't create a few of his own. Of course, he wouldn't be able to test them at all until Sappho procured a camera, but that didn't mean he couldn't design a few recipes in the meantime. He was so engrossed in all the known variations of potions (so far, that is), that he didn't hear someone approach his table.
