Journal: Padma to Dept. of Mysteries
Good Afternoon!

Just a few housekeeping notes as we get this team up and running.

Peter has been kind enough to set up our office on the Ministry floor and I would like us to use that room for meetings and whatever record storage is necessary. However, I will be looking to secure us some dedicates space on the research floor as well, somewhere we can conduct true research and experimentation without risking the rest of the Ministry offices.

At the moment, this department will function as a general research group. As such, we will be conducting both the sort of research one might traditionally have found in the Department of Mysteries as well as more immediately necessary work.

Peter and Theo - You will both be working with me to tackle the question of the castle's magic
Al - I understand you are working to preserve the buildings in Hogsmeade at the moment
Marlene - Your focus will need to be getting the hospital wing in order and looking into ways we can work around any deficiencies we may have in the supplies stored there.
Lily - We will need you to work closely with Marlene to stock up our medical supplies, potion ingredients and cures, etc. Please also coordinate with Professor Snape on the necessary ingredients he will need for classes and the Wolfsbane potion.

Although my own research focus will be the castle's magic, I will also be available to assist with any other project if you need an extra pair of hands or eyes for any reason.

If you have any questions about your assignments, please feel free to come and talk to me about it.

I would like to have weekly status updates on your progress, as well. For now, we can go with majority preference. Written report or weekly meeting. Nothing expansive. What you're working on, what your progress has been, and what your next steps are as well as if you have anything blocking you. Please let me know if you have a preference by the end of this week.

Please also let me know if there are any supplies you need in order to complete your work and I will see about getting it for you.

Most of the 'office' thing is about record keeping and accountability, to be honest. But, touching base daily will be good for this project. Perhaps you, me, and Theo at once, since we should all keep up to date on what the others are looking into.

Oh you mean we aren't working together? I'm sort of used to working in four, but I can do it by myself.

We are. But, there are also a lot of avenues to investigate. Some days we may all be looking at the same one, maybe puzzling through an arithmancy equation together, other days we may each be noses buried in different books chasing down our own ideas. It's a bit fluid, especially at the start when there are so many possibilities.

And, I don't want to dictate a path from the outset. I think it's better to share ideas, but not feel like we have to be looking at the exact same question at the same time all the time, if that makes sense? At least at the beginning when we're really sort of throwing darts in the dark to see what theories have merit.

That makes sense. I have to admit that I'm less of a sit down and do arithmancy type and more of a cast spells until things happen type. I'll adjust though.

And it makes sense. I can work with fluid. In fact, I bask in organized chaos as most Gryffindors.

What areas of magical research is your focus in?

It works well enough for me as well. I prefer to not be stifled by too much paperwork on the onset.

The area that allowed us to have fun in school? You can say we were self-taught and used our research to do nothing good.

You do have that reputation. Such as?

We researched just about anything from ancient potions to spells. Obviously we all became animagi. We also created a map of Hogwarts that told you were everyone was, where the rooms were even after they changed and only someone with the password could see it. Those were our masterpieces, but we have seven years worth of... pranks.

That is impressive. I'd say famously became animagi and at a rather young age. How long did it take to master that skill? As for that map, I'd say it's quite a shame it's not around now. Unless of course it is. It would be somewhat useful with new arrivals.

Well, we found out that Remus was a werewolf in 2nd year. We spent most of that year to figure out how we could help. We started training in third year and we managed by fifth.

I miss that map too.

I had always wondered.
I guess now I know.

Who knows it could turn up. As I understand it the castle hid "things".

Either way, knowledge of how it worked will likely prove to be valuable.

I look forward to collaborating with you.

Strangely enough, I can fill-in some of the gaps in the map's history.

Jamie told me after the swap that he'd knicked it from Harry when he was in school and still had it in 2028. He thinks his dad and Hermione would have put it in the vault we're supposed to be looking for. The most recent generations of Potters are rather sentimentally attached to it, it seems.

Harry had the map when we were in school. I never realized what it was at the time, but he was using it fifth year when the D.A. was trying to hide from the Inquisitorial Squad. From Hermione's memories, I had the impression he got it a year or two earlier from the Weasley Twins. Something about liberating it from Filch?

Oddity is the theme of this place.

I think that's a reasonable assumption. It is a very desirable item. Any idea on where we might find that vault?

That does explain away quite a few things. So you had Hermione's memories, the insight might be helpful to our work. I had heard about the map from the memories I recieved. I'm reasonably certain I know the password. People love things to come full circle, perhaps starting with the connection to Filtch is the way to go.
