RP: Padma/Parvati
Who: Hermion!Padma/Harry!Parvati
When: 2 April
Where: Parvati's Room
What: Padma checks on Parvati

The past few days had been a roller coaster of emotions. Her papa was alive and her daughter had arrived too, but Cassandra was dead and people were missing. She needed answers and when that happened, she turned to Padma.

She'd shown up to her room after breakfast, deciding that this was a much better place to to meet for this particular task. They tried all of the locator spells that Padma knew (and they were many), but they couldn't locate any of the three missing people, although there was something strange when they tried to find Glenda. "What do you think it means?" Parvati asked.

"She's been using Muggle means of transportation together with magic and she's decided to bypass the international bans on travel by using the ferry into France," Parvati said with a sigh. "It could still be helpful. Maybe she didn't tell us, because of plausible deniability but now we'll have someone on the outside." Glenda seemed too level headed to have left just because she was bored, but this made more sense. She might have found a way to help without getting them in trouble.

"I can't imagine either Cho or Teddy leaving, and even if Cho had left, she'd have stayed in the country. She's tied to England," she pointed out. "I don't like it. Not one bit. This feels like it's magic and we can't fight magic when we don't understand it. It's not even human magic. This is like trying to imitate house-elf magic. We can't do that, imagine replicating non-sentient magic from a building." She needed a drink, but she couldn't get it with Padma right there.

"At least your parents are all right. Somewhere out there, they are still healthy," she said, smiling at the other woman. "And I've gotten to see my fathers. And my children. I think we shouldn't have more, not if this is what it's like. Or maybe I shouldn't. I was rubbish at it."

"Unfortunately, that also means we have to wait and see if she contacts us at some point." Having someone on the outside only did them any good if they could communicate and they may never know if Glenda managed to get to the continent safely or not. Not knowing did not make Padma feel better in the least, plausible deniability or not.

Nor was she willing to accept that they couldn't figure out how to understand the magic. They just needed to study it more. "Maybe there's a pattern we're missing. Something connecting who the castle brings that isn't obvious? Or the timing when people arrive? The castle must have a purpose. It can't just be that the castle needs magic, not if we suspect the castle is sending people back." Because, really, what else could Parvati mean by bringing up non-sentient magic? "So, if the castle feels the need to send people back, then why? Do they not suit it's purpose? And if it sent Teddy and Cho back, it brought Regulus and Savannah at the same time. So, was it a swap? Is the castle trying again for some reason? Why those particular pairs? Was Cassandra's vision about the castle and that's why it was too much for her? Too foreign? We should talk to Sirius and see if he's noticed any changes in the energies of the castle. He senses more, as Headmaster, than even those of us who are more sensitive to magic would." She really needed to start making a list or five to sort this all out.

"Oh, Parvati. I'm sure once they get to know you and not who you became, things will change. You're not that woman yet and you don't have to make the same mistakes." A sudden idea struck her. "And, the castle may not like the idea of not having children. If it really wants us to repopulate and keep the magic it needs strong."

"True, but at least we know that it can be done," Parvati said. She might not agree with Glenda's methods, but doing something felt good, even if they were in the dark. "It's not like we haven't done plenty of crazy things without telling anyone," she said with a grin.

Parvati knew that not everyone was happy with his decision not to study the magic, but there was so much that they needed to do. She wasn't sure that putting their best people on this was the best use of their resources. "How do you understand a building? And even if we figure it out, how do we stop it? I know that so many want to study it and it's a nice riddle for those who like these things, but how does it help us? How does learning a pattern help us? Sirius has been feeling the castle, getting reactions, but he did say that it's not like a person, sending clear messages. If he can't control it, I don't know that we can."

Parvati sighed. "Apparently I drink too much." She hadn't meant to say that since Padma certainly agreed with them. "But Charlie? I can't see it. We were barely seeing each other when we were together. When he broke up with me, I was certain that we'd never get back together, and in a few months we decided to get married? I must have gotten pregnant and the marriage must have been terrible. The kids saw that." She laughed. "I don't know about kids, but the castle certainly seem to bring back people with strong magic and screwed up lives."

Padma stifled a giggle. "Of course we have. And now you're in charge and people are doing it to you."

Tilting her head forward, she gave Parvati a look. "How would it help?" she asked with a slight edge of fond exasperation to her voice. "We may not be able to stop it. And I doubt we have the power to control it. But if we could figure it out, we might be able to anticipate it. To plan around it and maybe avoid having any more random disappearances. Wouldn't that be better than just living at the whim of a semi-sentient building? You're going to have to tell Severus his son was randomly sent back to die at the castle's whim. What happens when it decides it doesn't want someone else here? When you have to tell Scorpius it sent Roxanne back? Or what if it decides to send me or Jamie back? We need to know so we know the risks to everyone here."

Pursing her lips, she refrained from commenting on the drinking. "Honestly, Parvati. With your history? Of course you got married when you found out you were pregnant. You would have wanted to do right by the baby, give him the family you didn't have. But, it wouldn't have made you happy, being with Charlie. I think you're happier now with Scorpius. Your kids are old enough to understand that sometimes people don't make each other happy." She rolled her eyes. "Strong magic makes for strong personalities, which generally leads to drama and screwed up lives."

"I want to say that it was more fun when we were doing it, but we had people trying to kill us so... it's equally annoying," she said, grinning although she knew that only they could see someone trying to kill her as a mere annoyance.

Parvati shrugged. "It seems a lot of work and resources for the possibility that we can figure out a pattern, and then assume that the castle interprets human behaviour according to any logical way." She didn't think that people behaved logically anyway. Teddy, though, that hurt. "I know, Padma, but he didn't go there to die. He went to live his life. He wasn't happy here, at least I don't think so. The work, the reality of it. He wanted to work in a bakery. At Hogwarts." She grinned. "The castle will never send you and Jamie back. It knows that I can't function without you around."

She sighed. "Yes, and then proceeded to have a miserable life. Apparently I was never around and Charlie was never around. Albus thinks he's responsible for the other two. Kirley- Strangely enough, he's the one who seemed to like me better now that he knows I don't hate Slytherins. Savannah- I don't know yet." She tilted her head. "Is that true? Or is it that strong personalities make for stronger magic? Not that the end result is different."

Padma just laughed and shook her head. Really, what was there to say to that?

Especially since it was true!

"We need to figure something out. The castle may not behave in a logical manner, but neither do people and something like this could make people start doing foolish things. If more people lose their family at the castle's discretion, sooner or later someone will do something drastic. And it'll be up to you, as Minister, to settle things down." She raised an eyebrow. "Do we hope the castle took Teddy's memories away, too? So he can enjoy the few years he has? And, you know Severus is going to look at it as thought he died. Everyone died. And Severus had only just gotten to meet him. We may see it as him going back to live his life, but others won't." She snorted softly, a smirk forming. "Well, that's true enough. You're hopeless on your own."

Reaching over, she took Parvati's hand. "So, your older self mucked everything up. You can see the mistakes and not fall into them this time. Show them you're not the same person they remember. Be there for them, this time. If Kirley's the most open to you right now, start there. If Al feels responsible for his brother, he'll appreciate you taking the time to be there for Kirley and may warm up to you, too. Savannah...you'll get to know her and when you're afraid of making a mistep with any of them, you'll come to me or Jamie or Scorpius and we'll set you straight," she finished with a grin.

"Maybe the strong personalities come first. Or maybe it's a bit like asking if the chicken or the egg came first. But, strong personalities, strength in the person, strong magic, and messed up lives all seem to go hand-in-hand. Boring, simple lives are only led by those who never make waves."

WHY? Why did people not know that life sucked and you kept fighting? "You know I could point out that people complaining about being here are being sent back to die. That should give them an incentive not to complain," she said with a grin although she knew that she couldn't do that. "I would think so because if Teddy has his memories, history would change and we would have people alive." He nodded. "I know he will, and I feel for him. I knew Teddy. Granted he was still a child, but I saw him grow up. I will miss him, but there's no other other way to look at it."

She sighed. "So not get randomly pregnant with my ex and get trapped into an unhappy marriage. I think I can take care of that considering that Charlie isn't here." She wasn't sure about everything else. "That seems too ... calculated. I don't want Al to like me because his brother does. If he can't learn to like me... I will respect that but in the meantime, we're trying, with lunch together every weekend. We'll go from there."

Padma had a point, and in the end it didn't matter. "Maybe that was the problem with Cho and Teddy. She was a therapist in the Muggle world. He was a baker. Not enough intensity for the school. In the end, it's still a building. It doesn't react like people do, but it'd make sense if it reacts with people with strong magic and personalities, but in the end, it's theories and more theories. We might as well spend the rest of our lives and we'll still have theories and it's not that I don't want to know but there are so few of us and we have other priorities, like the rest of the world and finding this secret vault."

"Or it could encourage certain young men who shall remain nameless to try because they're not known for accepting limitations well," Padma pointed out with a laugh. "But, you're probably right. Although, changing history and not letting wizards die out would also keep the castle supplied with magic." But, what would one baker who didn't want to live up to his parents' legacy do to change the course of events? Padma knew herself. While she would have loved Teddy as Harry's godson, she couldn't see anyone taking the tale of one man as evidence they shouldn't proceed with experiments in six years' time.

"It's not calculated, it's realistic. You're going to have to prove to him that you won't perpetuate the damage your future self and Charlie have already done to his siblings before he'll trust you enough to open up. He reminds me of Bill a bit, that way. Probably the Weasley genes from Charlie." She smiled. "But, while you know I would love to sit here talking theory and hypothesizing why the castle is doing what it's doing, you're going to be late for that lunch if you don't get a move on." She shooed Paravati toward the door. "Go on.
