RP: Al & Lucius
Who: Lucius & Al
When: before dinner, 3/21
Where: Outside the Great Hall
What: Lucius meets the weird Potter

Lucius had decided to eat in the Great Hall rather than his rooms. It wasn't something he normally bothered with, but spending another evening alone in his rooms was worse than the idea of socializing with a bunch of do-good Gryffindors and friends. He was going to have to start being more accessible, forming relationships with these people. For better or worse, they were the people with influence now. As much as it pained him, he was going to have to adapt to the changing landscape. So, that meant dinners in the Great Hall. How wonderful.

He was a bit early, but there was someone else who was standing outside the Great Hall looking as if he didn't want to go in either. One of the Potter boys, the younger who was apparently named after Severus and Dumbledore. What an odd combination, but then the father had never been fully in his right mind either. Still, this was the Potter who had been Sorted into Slytherin which was interesting. Also, this was the Potter who was friends with Scorpius, so Lucius had an interest there as well.

Approaching the young man, Lucius put on his most neutral face. "Good evening. Albus Severus, isn't it?"

Scorpius wasn't in the Great Hall yet, and Al was debating leaving and coming back in ten or so minutes when he was. It wasn't that he didn't want to talk to other people... Okay, no, that was exactly what it was. He wasn't in the mood for small talk, and the only people he knew who would spare him there were Scorpius and Jamie. He had been just about to turn around and try again when Lucius Malfoy, of all people, came up behind him.

"Mr. Malfoy." He inclined his head in greeting, wondering what on earth Scorpius' grandfather could want with him. "I'm,uh, I'm Albus Severus, yes. But, um, you can, you can call me Albus."

At least one Potter had manners, though he could do without the stuttering. "Albus then. It's a pleasure to meet you." He studied the young man, resisting the urge to tell him to stand up straight. The youth these days seemed to think that slouching was a work of art.

"You're friends with grandson, are you not?" He didn't need an answer to the question; he'd seen the way the two gravitated towards each other at meals. He only hoped the friendship didn't extend to more. The last thing he needed was for another Malfoy to fancy himself in love with a Potter. "How are you settling in?"

"Uh," Mr. Malfoy clearly didn't need an answer, so he slipped the first question. "I, uh, fine. It's, it's fine." He wished the floor would open up and swallow him. He wished a hippogriff would swoop in and out him out of his misery. He wished he was literally anywhere other than outside the Great Hall making small talk with Scorpius' grandfather.

"How, uh, how are, how are you, finding it?"

Did no one in the future teach their children to speak properly? Albus was the worst of the lot in terms of eloquence, but none of the next-generation children knew how to comport themselves. The exception might be the older Potter boy, but Lucius was withholding judgment on that. He had to fight the urge to tell the boy to speak up, stand straight, and make eye contact.

"I imagine much the same as anyone else. It's an adjustment, but one that must be made." There were few other choices, though Lucius had his reservations on the direction this new world was taking. However, he knew how to make any situation work to his advantage, and that's what he needed to do here. "Tell me about yourself. About my grandson. I regret that I do not know much about him, and would enjoy hearing about him."

Well shit. This was even worse than small talk. This was straight up questions. Albus was abysmal at answering questions.

"Uh. Scorpius, is, um, he, he's, great. He's, really, uh, he's really, famous?" That was so stupid. What a stupid thing to say.

""He's, smart. And, and, uh, he takes, he takes initiative... He, um, he's a good, he's good at, his job, and, um..." Fuck. What was he supposed to even say? "He's, he's a good friend. To me. I'm. Uh. I was working in, uh, charms. Experimental, experimental charms."

There was something just not right with this boy, but Lucius supposed he shouldn't be surprised. What more could he expect of the offspring of a Potter and Weasley. Any Black blood the boy had from the Weasley side was obviously diluted, and what was left was a stuttering, awkward mess.

"His job. As a model." Lucius still wasn't sold on that profession, though he'd resigned himself to having to accept it. Still, Scorpius had a chance to remake himself in this new world, and there was hope he'd find a more suitable career for a Malfoy. He raised a brow at Albus's admission of his own career. Perhaps there was more to this Potter than met the eye. "Experimental charms? That was always an interesting department in my day."

"It is. Uh, an interesting, um, interesting department. I was working on the practical application of some of the more frivolous charms." He realizes he was rambling, and quickly shut his mouth, rubbing the back of his neck with his hand.

"But, uh, yes, Scorpius is, is a, model. But not just, not just any, any model. He's, he was, face of the year. He's, he's the best."

"Frivolous charms? I wasn't aware there was such a thing." As far as Lucius was concerned, there was no such thing as frivolous magic, only frivolous wastes of talent with things like modeling. "I would be interested to hear more about these practical applications."

Of course, the conversation would be excruciating if he had to deal with more of this incessant stammering. "Albus, if you would please stop stumbling over your words I believe we would have a more successful conversation. I am not going to hex you; there's no need to be so nervous." He kept his voice neutral, refusing to let any of his annoyance into his tone.

"While I am pleased that he's at the top of his field, I hate to see him waste his potential. He's a very intelligent young man."

Al wasn't sure he wanted to have a more productive conversation with Lucius Malfoy. But he also didn't want to upset him either. He took a deep breath and tried to get his stammer under control. It was always worse when he was nervous. He'd once stammered so badly during an interview that he hadn't been able to get more than three words out, and there was a lot of press speculating as TK whether or not he was actually brain damaged.
Still, he wasn't about to let anyone have a low opinion of Scorpius. Especially not this man.

"Scorpius isn't wasting any, anything." He took another breath, and stood up straighter. "He's a, a lot, a lot for your family. You're respectable, because, because of him. You don't, don't understand how, how hard he works."

"So I've been told, and I've agreed to accept that in the past his career was instrumental in rebuilding the Malfoy name, but he won't be able to rely on his...talents in this new world."

It seemed this Potter did have a spine, but it was less annoying than the stammer had been so he supposed he should count it as a win. He had even stopped slouching. "We will need more than a pretty face to build Britain back up."

"Whatever Scorpius choose, chooses to do, he'll do it brilliantly." Who did Lucius Malfoy think he was, looking down on Scorpius. How dare he? "He is much, much more than a pretty face and if you think he won't do great things you're, you're wrong."

He shoved his trembling hands deep in his pockets.

"You're also underes, underestimating just what a pretty face can, can get you. So if you, if you want to keep this conver, conversation going then I'd advise, advise you to stop talking about, about him that way."
