RP: Peter and Cassandra
Who: Peter and Cassandra
When: late evening, 7 March
Where: North Tower
What: Petter arrives

Peter was walking brickly down Knocturn Alley. It was only the start of October, but the air was chilly. It was always cold here, with the sun blocked by buildings standing too close together and the aura from the dark magic. Peter wasn't scared of the dark. It was people you had to watch out for and those could show up at any moment.

He just needed some peace and quiet. Away from his mother who said that he looked too tired. Away from James, Lily and Harry, because he knew that it was just a matter of time before he would betray them. Away from Sirius who still acted like nothing wrong was happening. Away from Remus who could probably figure out what was happening.

He opened the door of the White Wyvern, the light and warmth of the pub hit him, but when he stepped inside, he was enveloped by darkness. Peter frowned. He knew exactly where he was. How many times had they been in this tower? Using one of the shortcuts that led them to the wrong tower? Too many was the answer.

How had he gotten here? You couldn't apparate to Hogwarts. Everyone knew that.

He walked toward the staircase when he saw a young woman. She didn't have school robes. A new professor maybe? He hadn't kept up with the news from Hogwarts. "I'm sorry, could you tell me how I got here? Is the Headmaster changing the spells around the school?" He couldn't imagine any other reason for his presence here.

When Cassandra couldn't sleep (which was often), she walked. Sometimes, she ended up in places she didn't desire to be. Sometimes, like tonight, she ended up exactly where she needed to be. Her goal had been to cast the bones and keep looking for the key even though her mind was utterly exhausted. Instead, she had seen a figure... Appear. The corner of her mouth perked up momentarily.

He was not a ghost. No, very clearly he was real and there. Cassandra stepped close - perhaps too close, peering at him in the dark of the tower. "You look like you could use a little something to drink. We'll begin with tea," which hadn't answered his question at all. "Answers to follow," she added as she turned calmly towards the ladder that led to the Divination room. She certainly wasn't going to take a strange man to her quarters. That was breaking too many rules of etiquette.

"Humor me when I ask, what year is it?" she asked as she ascended the ladder, pushing open the trap door and entering the tower which was only slightly lighter than the area below. She'd uncovered the windows in the day so there were hints of starlight and moonlight streaming in.

"I was going for a pint but I suppose tea will do." You couldn't ask the house-elves to bring you beer in front of a professor. Although maybe that didn't apply now that he wasn't a student. "Or hot cocoa. So much better than tea." He frowned at the question. Was this the new Divination professor? He'd heard she was weird. Then again they all were.

He followed her. He still had no idea why the school would have a ladder and trap door for a class when there were plenty of stairs but one didn't argue with the castle or the stairs.

"Right it's 1981. Is this a trick question?" He looked at the sky and something was off. He moved closer and saw the waning crescent moon high in the school. That was wrong. The new moon had started only two nights ago. Even when Remus wasn't around, Peter always kept track of the moon. It was his way to feel closer to his friend. "What's wrong with the moon?" He turned to her. "What's going on?"

"I'd rather you be sober for this conversation and then you can have a wee bit of whisky after, hm?" Unfortunately for him, she didn't have cocoa otherwise, she would have provided and she wasn't about to bother house-elves at the moment. Tea, she could handle. And tea would allow her to take a peek at the leaves when he left.

She watched him, smiling faintly as she lit a candle - which then lit all of the others and the fireplace roared to life. She'd scoured the hell out of that chimney so it wouldn't smoke up the place. Honestly, the ambiance in the room had been absolutely smothering before.

"That is an excellent question. What is wrong with the moon? Very clever," she complimented as she pulled the kettle off a shelf and started to fill it with her wand and a muttered aguamenti. "For you, the year was 1981. For me, it was 1908. But the truth is we are now in 2038. The castle has dragged you through space and time. I arrived just yesterday myself."

"I have a feeling that I'd rather be drunk for this conversation," he said, eyes drifting off to the one thing that didn't lie: the moon. If this had been anywhere else, he would have been more worried, but You-Know-Who wouldn't have brought him to the school, and even he couldn't have case the moon to change.

He listened to her very short explanation and the first reaction was to say that it wasn't possible. She was lying, but he couldn't figure out a way to explain the changes in the sky nor the Apparition to Hogwarts, even though he hadn't felt any of the pulls of Apparition or a portkey.

"You look good for someone who's over a hundred year old," he said, not sure that he was completely sold on the idea. "Why would the school bring us here? Why would you have been put in charge of the Divination class? Couldn't whoever is Headmaster find a problem professor? And why me?"

That was certainly fair but she expected his sharp questions would be a lot less interesting had he a bit of the drink in him. So she chose to ignore that particular comment as she hung the kettle over the fireplace to begin the heating. She settled in a chair and waited for him to run through the questions he might have that would open the floor to further details.

That first comment he had though, she arched an eyebrow, "Not appropriate but thank you." Even if she wasn't actually over a hundred years old and had just moved that time forward, the sentiment was the same. Start with the simpler things. "I don't know that I'm in charge of this class. My... apparent 'great-great-granddaughter' was." There was a keyword in there.

"From what I understand, from a lovely young lady called Savannah, there was a problem with," she frowned slightly, trying to think of the appropriate way to put it, "Birth rates. The Ministry tried to fix it, buggered it up as per usual, and everyone perished instead. Now the castle has decided to fill its hallways again." Cassandra paused, shaking her head slightly, "I'd rather not think on precisely why."

"Not appropriate because you aren't over a hundred years old or because where you're from people don't tell you that you're beautiful?" he asked, because this felt like safer ground, no different than an intellectual question posed to Binns. "OK..." He wasn't sure he understood what she was saying. "Let's start with the basics, what's your name and what's your descendant's name?" Maybe he could figure out who was the Divination professor. "And I'm Peter."

Peter had no idea what the problem with the birth rates was, because everyone seemed to be popping out kids lately unless they were dead. There were a lot of dead people. "Leave it to the Ministry to solve a problem by killing us all."

He slowly went and sat down. "Because Hogwarts like life in any form. I'm not sure that the castle is capable of forming a concrete plan other than 'we need life', so it finds life." His eyes kept straying to the moon. "You know that I'll need slightly more proof than that, right? Newspa- right there wouldn't be a newspaper. Maybe the ghosts or the Headmaster's portraits. I'm assuming that Dumbledore isn't still headmaster sixty year in the future."

"Generally, such compliments are for married couples or family - unless one is considering courting," which they were not, for many obvious reasons. Cassandra let him have control of the conversation, though the way she sat was almost imperious - like sitting with the royal family. "I am Cassandra Trelawney. My descendant was Sibyll." She had no idea if he had known her or not but she filed his name away for now.

She chuckled as he too seemed unimpressed by the Ministry. At least, they all had that in common. "I'd give the castle a bit more credit than that but it is a fair point," she watched his gaze turn away again. Poor dear. He didn't have the benefit of the Inner Eye to guide him. "There are likely newspapers of the incident somewhere. But the current date, aye, talk to the ghost. They're around."

Her smile turned fond at the mention of Albus, "He's here but he's certainly not Headmaster aged. Transfiguration professor instead." The kettle was whistling and she got up from her chair to pull it away from the flame on the iron arm. Flicks of her wand had teacups coming down from the shelves, one settling in front of Peter and the other in Cassandra's spot as she fetched the tin of tea. The tin itself was relatively old but the tea inside was surprisingly fresh. She busied herself with the making, expecting more questions.

"That seems... counterintuitive. You'd want to tell that to someone you want to date," he said shaking his head, but it was temporary. "Cassandra Trelawney, I do know you. Famous Seer. I'm pretty sure there's a chocolate frog card with your name. I... think I know her. The name sounds familiar." He might have heard it in connection with the new professor. It seemed a little irrelevant now.

"I'm not saying that the castle doesn't know, but I doubt that it's trying to recreate a new procreation plan," he said. "If it is, I hate to think of the people it's bringing back." Unless it failed as much as the Ministry.

"shit" he whispered. Again he wasn't sure he believed her completely but there was something wrong with a Dumbledore who wasn't old and all knowing. "Right so how many people are here? Who's here other than Dumbledore? Where do we sleep? What do I need to know?"

"I'm... unfamiliar with the term 'date'," though she assumed it was something similar to courting but it somehow felt more casual. "Mm, though right now I am merely 'time traveller' much like yourself," not that she ever thought she could escape the whole 'famous seer' thing. It would follow her to the grave - and beyond, apparently. "Mentions in books and collectibles... What a legacy."

She shrugged her shoulders as she poured the hot water into the mugs so the tea leaves could steep. Who knew what an ancient castle was 'thinking' or planning? The magic was so old that it could have even been a little addled. She said none of this. "It brought you - do you think so little of yourself?"

Her eyebrows went up at the coarse language, not shy with it herself but a bit surprised to hear it being said in her company by a man. Manners certainly had changed. "I'm not certain of the exact number - a little over a dozen and I'm only the second woman. I've only met a Savannah and Harry. I already knew Albus. Pick wherever you like to sleep, I suppose." As for what he needed to know, that was an interesting question. She stirred her tea lightly and sipped. There was no sugar or cream to be offered but it was lightly enchanted to be 'perfect', whatever that was.

"We're searching for a Gringotts key. It's in the castle somewhere but no one knows where. Apparently, food and supplies will become very scarce without it. I suppose no one knows how to farm or hunt." There was a tone in her voice that suggested that she did.

"It's like courting, but less formal. You like someone, you tell them, you go out." Not that he'd done much of that. People - women never paid attention to him, not the way they looked at Sirius. "I think you should be proud of what you did. Most people are forgotten the moment they die. You have become part of history."

He hadn't even thought of himself at this point. "I'm sure it's some kind of mistake. I'm not important enough, not like you or Dumbledore."

Peter snorted. "If the castle believes in repopulating the wizarding world, he needs a better balance." The name Harry stopped him, but then it was such a common name... with Muggles. "Would you happen to know Harry's last name? And thank you," he said, taking the mug.

"That's an interesting search. Maybe there' a way to have the castle tell us." If they had managed with the map, they- he could try something to find the key. He wouldn't have the other marauders to help, but he was the patient one. He'd find a way. Her addendum made him look up. "I... doubt it. Most people don't do that anymore. Food comes all wrapped up in butcher's paper."

"No chaperone?" she asked, just barely stopping herself from sounding scandalized. At the same time, wouldn't it be nice to be able to get to know someone without a brother or whatever hovering over one's shoulder? "I was not exactly given the choice to it though," she bit her bottom lip for a moment, her attention drawn away for a moment.

His immediate dismissal of himself had her looking back, her expression soft like she wanted to say something - but she didn't really know him so it wasn't appropriate. And he wasn't exactly wrong about the balance either. "Potter, I think. He's a funny sort. I like him," she answered with ease and a shrug of a shoulder.

"Mm, I'm looking this way," she used both hands to gesture to the room around her. "I was actually coming up to cast the bones when you spotted me," she admitted though she wasn't sure she wanted an audience for that. "Scotland is excellent for stag and boar hunting. We could feed ourselves for a fair bit if anyone cared for the gruesome work."

Peter shook his head. "There haven't been chaperones in- I have no idea how long, but no. People go out by themselves, go to dinner, watch a Quidditch game." Time travel really made things complicated and the more they talked, the more he believed her. The moon outside was a clear reminder. "No, you know that you have the potential of becoming an historical figure because you've done it once. You can do it again if you want. Or not. It's really up to you."

He froze, mug in his hand. "Harry Potter? Is he from the past like you?" He doubted because the Potters had strange names, even if not as strange as the Blacks. "Or is it from a more recent time? I have a friend- his son was named Harry Potter and it's not a very common combination." He wasn't sure why he was explaining it to her. She wouldn't know what he had- would do.

Peter tried to smile at her comment. "I don't know if it's the gruesome part of the fact that we never had to do it. It's not that we don't know how, but that we don't even think that it can be done."

What a scandal that would cause back home - going out with a suitor without someone to make sure nothing untoward would happen. But perhaps that was the point? Perhaps the untoward didn't matter anymore. "When you're someone like me, you don't really get a choice," her voice grew quiet, tone more serious than she would have liked, "You become someone's hero, someone's villain. The choice isn't yours - it's outside forces who decide for you."

It seemed Peter knew a Potter of sorts but the way he froze suggested something was off. She watched him in silence as he explained, searching his face for more clues. "More recent. Apparently, it was his future self that hid the key in the first place."

Cassandra's gaze flitted to the moonlit window, the forest beyond. There were dangers there - probably more than there had been before - but the hunting would likely be good too if it came down to that. "Perhaps I'll bring up the suggestion - should it become necessary. Teach you boys how to be men," she smiled then, laughing at her own teasing.

"Then maybe you get a choice now?" He might not really be sure, but he assumed so. "Most of the people would know who you are if they come from after your year. So for them, your powers are a given and they don't care as much." Although he knew that was a curse too. Sirius certainly hated it when people didn't pay attention to him.

"I see, then he's likely to be James and Lily's son." Harry had survived. That meant You-Know-Who never went after there. Maybe he had worried about nothing and he hadn't betrayed them. "Hopefully he has some idea what his future self would do. Let's hope."

He nodded. "You probably should." He chuckled. "Hey, but we can take a woman out on a date. Give us some credit."

She shook her head slightly, "When they know you've the true Sight, everyone wants something. Especially those in power - but even your next-door neighbour comes calling." She certainly hoped it wouldn't be too much of an issue here. Yes, she could volunteer her abilities to find the key or something that would help them as a whole but quiet knocking on her door in the dead of night needed to be a thing of the true past.

Was that relief? She didn't probe. A person was entitled to their secrets, even as open as he seemed to be. She saw him as a gentle soul, perhaps even... Young. Not necessarily innocent - who was? But certainly young even if they were of a similar age. It was an impulse that drove her to reach out for his hand, to give it a brief, gentle squeeze.

"Not a Trelawney woman, you don't," she arched an eyebrow, turning the conversation to humor, "We're a matriarchy and we do the choosing."

"I don't know the people here, so I can't really say if they would, but I've had my fill of prophecies, so I can promise you that I won't bother you. Besides, prophecies are always rather vague and end up causing more problems than anything else. If they came with certainties and disclaimers than I'd be more willing to ask." There were two families hiding out and he was so sure that it was Harry, but this Harry was not a child, so he survived.

Peter laughed despite the situation. "That's very modern of you, although one would argue that in the end it's always the women who choose, even when the men do the asking." Women certainly didn't choose him and he'd stopped asking. James might have wanted Lily, but it only worked out when Lily chose him. "May I ask what time it is? I don't know if I should talk to people tonight or-" At worst, he got a good night of sleep. Hogwarts was warmer than his flat and didn't smell. He could wake up early, confirm her story and if she was lying, he could go to work. He really didn't think she was lying, though. "It's strange how easily I believe you."

"Do you want to know the secret of prophecies?" She leaned forward, lowering her voice to a conspiratorial whisper, "Most prophecies are self-fulfilling. If you aren't told that certain things will happen, would you still do them?" And that was why she kept secrets from the Ministry. It occurred to her that she ought to see if she could find her books of prophecy, if her magic had protected them throughout the century and a half.

"Actually, it's quite ancient but I'll agree with the rest," she smiled faintly but didn't go into the details. That would have been a long history lesson involving druids and Cornish royalty that she didn't quite want to get into. "Most everyone's probably asleep already," she confirmed gently. He'd need somewhere to crash for the night. "I can turn a couple of tables into a temporary bed for you, if you like," Cassandra offered. As for his trust, she shrugged her shoulders, "I have one of those faces."

"But are the prophecies self-fulling or are people so conditioned that they will do what the prophecy say, because they can't see a way out? If you know a prophecy and willingly ignore it is it the same as you not sharing? Can people even ignore them?" Peter asked and he knew that this was becoming very theoretical about the nature of people. "I would agree that most people will fall victim of them, because people like certainties and a prophecy feels like a certainty compared to a truly random future."

Peter had no idea what she meant but he wasn't about to argue with her about women. He barely dated. "All right so I'll find a place to sleep for the night. You don't mind if I get something near here for tonight, do you?" In case she was lying he didn't want to go walking all around the castle. "And it's all right. There are bedrooms not to far from here. I know the school well enough to know where to go. Thank you for the offer though. It's very kind of you." It was. Most people were not very kind with him generally speaking.

He got up. "Well, it was very nice meeting you, Ms. Trelawney. I'll see you in the morning and I hope you have a good night of sleep."

"'Tis a bit late to get into theories of humanity, I expect," she smiled softly, "Perhaps a conversation to have at a later time, aye?" He needed sleep if he was going to have his grand adventure of surviving the future. They all needed sleep.

"I don't mind at all," Cassandra's smile grew slightly. He was so polite. She decided then that he was one of her's, under a small umbrella of protection such as she could offer. And he was under there with Albus, though he didn't know it. She gave him a small nod at his thanks but only said, "Don't forget to finish your tea. It'll help you sleep."
