Thor was not as sanguine about the idea of loosing the mother as the she-creature appeared to be. In fact, he was rather horrified at her matter-of-fact attitude that the young woman had "lived a good life." She'd barely made it out of childhood herself, in Thor's opinion, and while that may have been a good life, it certainly wasn't a full one.
He opened his mouth to give her his opinion on her comments, but paused as she smiled and held up the new life in her arms. In that instant, everything in Thor softened, and it showed on his face. Children, all children, were amazing beings from his point of view. And this little one had a rougher time coming into the world than most.
Without thinking, Thor lifted his hand to gently stroke a finger against the soft cheek of the baby, and the child's eyes turned to look for the source of the touch. Thor smiled. "Smart one. Smart and strong, he should be alright then. Right?"
The unspoken portion of his question was whether the boy would be alright without his mother.
