Thanatos was no stranger to San Francisco. He was no stranger to Golden Gate Park either. He recalled the sand of the shore, and the thousands of trees that were eventually planted to stabilize the dunes. It was one of those spots that he came back to over the years, mostly out of curiosity. Everything was always changing, and it wasn't always for the better, but sometimes Than did enjoy watching it happen. In 1967, he just so happened to find himself struck with the urge to see what had changed.
That brought him to the park in June. Thanatos regretted his decision almost immediately, but he had this reaction with almost everything. If the panicked ripple of tension didn't dissipate, then he'd have known he was right to regret coming. As it happened, however, the Fates had something else in mind. Than looked rather out of place, wearing a stuffy suit in the middle of the park. Women with long hair and silly outfits chased after men with even longer hair and even sillier outfits. Than was beginning to feel unbearably uncomfortable when a pair of these long-haired individuals approached him.
By the time he figured out which was the man and which was the woman, he had been convinced to try what they both tried and failed to describe to him in a logical fashion. He took it just so they'd both shut up.
He left the park after that, feeling nothing except an even more overwhelming sense of discomfort. An hour later, he was watching the walls ripple.
Ten minutes after that, he was trading outfits with a long-haired man with a grin that spread three feet across his face.
He wandered after that, wearing sunglasses that only brightened the color of everything around him, a white undershirt that smelled of rainbows and Mount Olympus, and pants that shrank the moment he pulled them on. As he laughed and worked the fabric closed, they stopped shrinking a bit above his knees. The black boots he wore were heavy enough to sink him through the sidewalk, but somehow he stayed above ground as he walked.
It took a moment before he realized he had come in contact with someone, and by then, she was pulling him into a hug and kissing him and Thanatos grinned. He had been walking for days and now she was there and she was like sunshine. "Bast," he repeated with an easy laugh. Everything felt easy. It was a welcome change from Than's usual pace, but he was in no state to realize as much. "Bast from Egypt."
Thanatos nodded, and laughed again, and then moved to touch her shoulder. "You're glowing. I'm Thanatos. You're like the sun."
