She didn't offer..Oh. The hostility hit him like a slap to the face. Bragi blinked, stunned. Whatever faux pas he had committed had really struck a chord with her. She hated him for some reason. That bothered Bragi. He was no Baldr. He was not universally adored by all. But Bragi did think himself likeable. Most people liked him, and if they didn't Bragi went out of his way to change their minds with startling focus and drive. Sometimes he failed anyway, or made it worse, but it wasn't ever from lack of trying. The more it became clear that this goddess did not desire Bragi's company, the more determined he became to stop her from leaving the tree until she gave some sort of indicator that she would be open to changing her mind.
On the upside though, he had been right about her smile. It was very pretty, even if it looked slightly murderous. He could bounce back with that. Bragi decided he would accept a full open smile from her as a sign. Besides, he bet she had a beautiful open smile. They were usually more beautiful than the small murderous ones. He smiled at her.
“Don't worry about it. That's not a problem” he said, “I can give you one. Then someday when I have earned the right to know your name, you can give back the one I've lent you.” She didn't offer, so it was up to Bragi to give. It itched that she wouldn't tell him. He wanted to know her actual name, and he would find out eventually. But if she would not tell him, Bragi still needed something to call her until he'd learned the real thing. “Is there any kind of name in particular you'd like?”
Scaring off wildlife? Bragi blinked again. What wildlife? The bird that flew off? She was upset about the bird? That was all? Bragi could probably get the bird back for her. He'd caught a glimpse of it, but didn't know what kind it was, but if she knew that, he could probably learn the call and get it back. Bragi was very good at bird calls. He opened his mouth to ask her about the type when Bragi suddenly thought better of it. There was a chance she'd decided she disliked him on sight and the bird thing was a side effect. If this goddess could not like him even without the bird, she should not get the bird back.
Instead Bragi said, “Thinking, of course. This is a very good thinking tree. Especially considering everything that happened here a few years ago. I'm surprised you asked. I'm sure you've heard that story.”
