This was rapidly becoming the sort of situation that only got worse if you dared to ask How much worse can it possibly get? Idun was too busy to stop and ask the question, but that was simply because the dry blades of grass were nurturing a growing fire that was going to take out every living creature for miles. This was no longer exhilarating. It was genuinely worrisome. She wanted to apologize to Philotes, for dragging her into this and nearly getting her killed, but everything in sight seemed to have recently had all sorts of tiny, adorable babies, so Idun was focused on keeping Baby Killer off her list of official titles. It was a distracted "Huh?!" that came in response to Philotes' initial suggestion, and it took another moment of flailing after mice and finally capturing a few before her words registered.
Her skirt! Her stupid, cumbersome skirt! Oh, it was perfect! Philotes was going to save the day! Idun could've tackled her in an overwhelming hug of adoration if it weren't for the squirming animals attempting to escape her grasp.
"Oh, you're a genius! You're my savior! I wouldn't have even considered that, not even if I was wearing a skirt!" Idun deposited her mice into the cloth prison and then gave her new friend's upper arm an appreciative squeeze. "It'll be okay! We'll save them! And...oh! Oh, I think there was a stream! Or...maybe..."
Idun let her words trail off as she cautiously approached the fire, and attempted to beat it into submission with her boot-clad foot. When that failed, she scampered after another fuzzy animal instead. Well, at least the chipmunk didn't resist like the mice had. Not even the tiny chipmunk baby.
Running back to Philotes, the animals were added to the skirt, and only then did her friend's pale appearance register? Idun's eyes widened. She paled as well, though the reasons were not quite as clear. Not that she knew why Philotes was suddenly ghostly white. But Idun was instantly worried about the other goddess, and she gestured wildly to try and break the far-away look that had taken over her gaze.
"Philotes? What's wrong? Are you alright? We're going to save the animals, you don't need to worry, just tell me what's wrong and I'll help, I swear it!" she exclaimed frantically. Was the fire still spreading? Idun couldn't tell. The field was so much warmer than it had been before.
Idun had been panicking already, but this really sealed the deal. If Philotes was panicking, and Idun was panicking, how were they going to fix this situation?!
