The arm came again before Hades could stop it. Looping around his. Hades tried to compare it to a snake, but he couldn't. Her blood was too warm. The second time didn't catch him off guard nearly as much as the first. Hades cringed, but he cringed less. The goddess was a certain way. That had been established. To be the way she was, she had to do these sorts of things. Just because Hades did not like the way or the things didn't mean they were wrong.
Some people probably liked connections. They probably liked becoming two people walking together instead of two people walking. He didn't want to discourage her from doing the things. Hades just wanted to discourage her from doing them with him. He'd wait until an appropriate moment, then respectfully remove his arm.
“I've never heard of a criteria like that” Hades said. Invaders pillaged homes first. They looted them then burned them to the ground. One of the best ways to get rid of an enemy was to find out where they set up camp and attack while they were sleeping. Hades did not think home was a good place to store a heart. If a person who couldn't afford it were unfortunate enough to have that kind of weakness, the best place to keep it would be buried. That was the bad thing about hearts. Once someone had one, they couldn't survive without it. “It doesn't change my answer,” he said a few seconds later. He had connections like she said. But they weren't to that place, and there was no reason they should matter. Hades didn't want them to.
When she apologized again, Hades nodded. In the silence that followed he thought about the barnacle goddess. Hades knew she fit there. Not just because of her definition of home. He just didn't quite know where he'd place her. Generally like things were grouped. Hades hadn't found anything like her down there. He suspected he wouldn't find anything else. She was obviously very important. It took a second for the question to register when she started talking again. When it did, Hades blinked.
“I think that if I am going to rule the Underworld, my loyalty should be to it first and foremost, don't you?” he said after a moment.
