Philotes bit her lip when the unexpected outburst came. Not because he'd startled her, or because she was upset. No, she'd bit her lip to keep from smiling and letting her pleased laughter escape. Hades, she felt sure, would not much appreciate that she was utterly tickled that he so obviously wanted to keep the... animal.
She had suspected, from the moment he brought the “dog” up in conversation that it had more meaning than he wanted her to know. Perhaps more than he wanted to admit even to himself. He was rather closed up. Not closed off; she could see sparkles of what he could be, who he probably really was, under the dark hardness he liked to show. He was clenched tight, like a fist, she suddenly realized. Keeping what he held close safe, ready to hit if he had to defend it. But when he talked about the “dog,” he unclenched. Just a little bit, but it was still nice to see.
He needed a pet, Lottie decided. He was not very warm on her suggestion of finding a home, maybe he didn't think he could trust it. But the “dog” definitely sparked something in Hades, and she could only think it was a good thing for him in the long run. Eventually, he'd see that he needed both the dog and the home. For now, though, maybe she could start him on that path by planting a seed that would grow in his mind to tie them both together. He might not think he needed a home, but surely he would want to see that the dog did. It had “been on it's own for a while” but since he was already thinking about its well-being, soon he'd want to make sure that it was getting fed, had shelter and companionship. Pets just sort of did that to you.
Before she could put her plan into action and plant her cunning mind-seed, Hades said something that completely derailed her train of thought. So startling was his statement that she didn't even think to comment on why fear would drive somebody to attack something just because it was different. She'd come back to that later. Right now, Lottie just had to know: “Other heads? Other heads? Just how many heads does... ooohhhhh... that's why it has three sets of teeth, isn't it? It has three heads?” Then she blinked. “Where did a three-headed dog come from?”
