Nergal grinned when his big brother came over to look at the insides of the body with him. Maybe he was a good brother after all. “No, that’s the spleen there. This is the liver. I think.”
He didn’t really know where things were on the insides of mortals. But he had asked a healer once where the best place to stab someone was. The healer had told him the liver was a good place and pointed to a spot on his abdomen to show Nergal its location. That had been a fun lesson to learn. The healer had told him about kidneys and the spleen, too.
Nergal was going to tell Nanna all about what he knew about the insides of mortals when he noticed his brother looked a little uncomfortable. That was when is finally occurred to him that he had made a huge mess in their mama’s kitchen. There was a lot of blood on the floor where Nanna was standing. It was all over the table too. That was not going to make Ninlil very happy.
“Nanna?” he said, looking at his big brother. “I think I maybe should not have brought this inside, huh? I would show you the mortal’s heart and guts and stuff, but I think I better clean this up before we get caught.” The young god hopped off the table and slipped in the pool of blood. As he started to fall, he reached out for support and grabbed his older brother.
