Eris ran like her immortal life depended on it, until her heart pounded and her legs burned like the house Pearidotus used to have to come home to, before Eris had visited it that morning. She didn't check to see if anyone was behind her until she had gone an impressive distance. This way, if someone was chasing her, Eris could find out if she lost them, and if no one was chasing her, she could pretend someone was, and that she had just lost them. When Eris turned her head to look behind her, there was no one there. She must have lost them.
After that her interest in running completely flagged. Eris looked down at the pear in her hand that she'd snatched as she went, and took to the skies to find her pretty new foreign friend again. She hoped he'd had the sense to run too, in case they'd also been after him or hadn't, and that he hadn't done something lame like disappeared into the Concepts. That was cheating. It wasn't nice to those who may or may not want to catch them. But Eris didn't have to worry. Once she had flown up high enough, it was relatively easy to find him a good distance from the market mayhem. He'd ran too after all. Oh that god did know how to please her!
She flew down and dropped right behind him. Eris straightened herself up, flapped her wings once for balance, and waited for him to spin around to find her. When he faced her, she beamed at him. “That was fun,” Eris said. She handed him the pear. “They're gritty. Like swallowing sand, but not. It's weird. Very weird. You should try it,” she said.
