It felt like Hades had been trampled by his own chariot. Makaria wanted to leave him, leave the Underworld, leave everything, and die for a mysterious “him.” Who was “him?” Where did he live, and what was his lung capacity? Makaria had never mentioned anyone before. Hades would have remembered it if she had. There would be a bunch of books strung about the other side of the room, and a well worn path in the middle of the floor, and Hades heart wouldn't be beating like this.
Makaria was too young for this. She had to be too young for this. Why had she decided she wasn't still too young for this? Hades had hoped to have at least a few dozen more centuries. At least. Hades had hoped that when this happened Seph would be there and Hades wouldn't have to be a single married parent trying to figure out the best way to tell his sweet loving daughter that she was being really stupid. Hades knew. He hadn't handled love too well the first time he'd encountered it either. It was a quality that he really hoped she wouldn't inherit.
Hades cursed Demeter. Persephone shouldn't be missing things like this. She should not be out planting flowers when she could be here saying the right thing and stopping Hades from saying the wrong one.
“What you are? What you are?!” Hades began, fist clenched. He stood, and started pacing a bit, and the more he talked, the louder his voice became. “What you are is my daughter. What you are is a princess, and a goddess who brings peace to those who are at the end of the line and deserve it most. You are good. And you want to throw everything away?.... Your family?..... Your friends?.... Your entire life? For a mortal who you don't even think would accept you unless you changed everything about yourself first? Unless you became something you aren't?” He bit his lip “....I'm....I'm disappointed.”
Hades stopped and looked at her. The sadness. The reluctance. He walked over to her and cupped her face in his hands. “If he can't accept all of you, he doesn't deserve any of you.” He shouldn't have raised his voice. She was trying to grow up. It was terrifying, but inevitable. Hades could want her to stay the same forever all he wanted, but it wasn't something that he could expect and be fair to her. But if she thought for one moment that he was going to let her run off with a guy who didn't even want her, she was delusional. Couldn't Hades just buy her a tiger?
