Bast tilted her head to the side and gave Ahti a long look. Which was very different than what she would normally do, what she wanted to do. She wanted to blast the hippo and tell her just what she could do with her stupid suggestions and questions and just who did she think she was. But something made her pause, though she couldn't put her finger on just why.
She didn't really want to get into the whole thing about her job satisfaction. Because her knee-jerk reaction was that of course she was happy with what she'd done protecting kings. They were responsible for the well-being of many. That woman, she was only responsible for the well-being of the little person still growing inside her. Sure, there was something nice about seeing first hand how her actions helped people, but it didn't logically make one better than the other. And she wasn't going to think about it, let alone answer Ahti who was just trying to bait her.
Two could play at that game.
“It wasn't appreciated?” Bast sneered. “By whom? Who did you want to appreciate you, Ahti? Did you want a pretty necklace or a royal proclamation or what? Were we all supposed to jump up and down and sing your praises because you did your job? Nobody does it for me, why should they do it for you? You know why I do things? Because I want to. Because it's right. I help people, I make them happy, because I like to, not because I get recognition.”
Then she shrugged one shoulder. “I toot my own damn horn, I don't wait for others to do it for me. So what the hell is your problem?”
