Now this was getting interesting, Bast noted, watching Ahti change position. With the snake. What was she doing with a snake? Snakes were not her thing, were they? Bast couldn't recall, because honestly, she really hadn't paid that much attention to the other goddess. The only reason Bast knew her name was because she recognized a like trouble-maker and thought it was a good idea to at least have a basic idea of who she might be dealing with. But she couldn't remember Ahti having anything to do with snakes before. And why was she on top of a roof now?
Bast slipped closer, her attention on the goddess above. But her attention was fixed elsewhere, and Bast followed her gaze to a very pregnant mortal woman. Bast paused, tail twitching slightly as she considered. Her eyes went from Ahti to the woman, then back to Ahti. She couldn't quite get all the puzzle pieces to align into an answer that made sense, but whatever was going on was enough to make the fur on her back stand up. And Bast had lived long enough that she knew better than to ignore a gut feeling. Something bad was about to happen.
Once more, her sharp-eyed look went to the mortal woman and without thinking about it, Bast once again slunk forward, keeping close to the houses. She didn't want to startle the woman; that might be bad for her and bad for the baby. Suddenly, she stopped and turned her head up toward Ahti. Bad for the woman. Bad for the baby. Is that what Ahti was doing? Was she going to harm the pregnant mortal with the snake? Was she going to drop it on her?
But... she was pregnant! Bast had nothing at all against pranking people, she did it herself quite a lot. She avoided being malicious though, and this wasn't just malicious, this was... wrong. A confirmed hedonist, Bast rarely prescribed to what other people felt was proper etiquette and what should and shouldn't be done. But harming a pregnant woman and her unborn child was a step too far over the line. She wasn't going to let that happen.
But if she just popped up there and tackled Ahti, the goddess might still drop that snake and scare the woman. Plus, the snake probably wouldn't like it much either. Subtle wasn't something she was good at, but something she did do well was think on her feet. Just that quick, Bast had a plan and she put it into action.
Standing on all four feet, upright and no longer sneaking, Bast fluffed up her fur to make herself particularly adorable. Then she pranced forward, like a kitten, right into the mortal woman's path. There were exclamations and oohs and ahhs, though no petting. Bast had learned that adults were less inclined to pet than children, and that was fine. She didn't want to make the woman stop, she wanted to make her move. Very carefully, she twined herself around the mortal's legs, taking great care not to trip her, but at the same time moved her to the middle of the path, away from the building that Ahti perched upon.
