The station was running with canned footage and the weekend anchor for the holiday so Julián was glad to have the day. He had decided last minute to go to the BBQ after his mom had flown to Fort Lauderdale to see old friends for the long weekend. So he'd dressed casually and made up a tres leches cake to bring with him, since the community invitation had mentioned bringing food to share.

He deposited the cake on the picnic table designated for the desserts and then grabbed himself a lounge chair to enjoy the perfect sunshine while he waited for more guests to arrive. Maybe he'd find a familiar face or two, or make some new acquaintances. It was a holiday, after all, he intended to celebrate properly.

Since school had ended and Simone hadn't quite found a job yet--even if she wasn't trying terribly hard because she was slightly worried it might interfere with her and Jack's plans to get away next weekend--when her roommates had mentioned the community BBQ, she'd thought it sounded far more her sort of event than Thursday's party, which has been quite confusing on so many levels. She'd gone grocery shopping yesterday and prepared a large batch of marinated chicken, thinking it was only kind to bring enough to share with others.

The commune roots were still present in some things, apparently.

This morning, she'd woke up with the impulse to do a bit of baking, and so she'd made several batches of cookies, certain that there wouldn't be any left over to bring back home and not minding in the least. She made it to the lakeside, comfortable in her jeans and simple grey shirt. After dropping the food off at the appropriate stations, she poured herself a drink that looked like some kind of strawberry lemonade and took it over to look for somewhere to relax a bit.

When she reached the lounge chair, one of the few still available, she looked at the man in the next one over. "Is this seat taken?" she asked, motioning to the empty lounge chair.

Julián had bee ruminating in his own thoughts - nearly all wondering if Sofia would be attending - when someone asked about the lounge chair next to him. He smiled, naturally coming to his face as if the spotlights had turned on, and said, "Not at all, and if it were, I'd kick them out," she was very pretty, and vaguely familiar. "Oh, hey, I know you," he said, it coming together, "Well, sort of. Iris posts pictures of her housemates sometimes, you were at the party last week." What could he said, he was good with faces. Came with his job, and his lineage.

"Julián," he said by way of introduction and put out his hand to shake once she'd settled onto her seat.

Judd / Joe

2024-05-25 07:07 pm UTC (link)
Judd had seriously considered spending all of Memorial Day at the gym, except that there were people at the gym. There were people at the Memorial Day Barbecue, too, but some combination of Judd's muscle tone, leather jacket and scowl was mostly keeping them away. Realistically, as Recruiter for the area, he felt he had to be here; any of the Sleepy Hollow High students he was in talks with would expect to see him. Mercifully, he didn't have to be here in uniform, so nobody had yet to attempt to thank him for his service. (He had had to walk away from someone who'd told him the event was to 'honor all serving soldiers'.)

He'd been hoping he might spot Robert in the crowd, then he'd have someone to stand near that he didn't have to talk to. Given Robert was even more imposing a figure, there was no way anyone would bother them, either. Instead, his gaze lighted on someone he recognised from a slightly different context. Judd made a conscious effort to stroll over, rather than usual brisk pace which would always resemble a march. He approached from the side, waiting until Russo noticed him before he spoke. "Didn't expect to see you here. You're not celebrating with your family?"

Joe wasn't on shift this Memorial Day and while ordinarily he might have just stayed at the garrison and caught up on some reading or spent more time training his new K-9 partner, Dax, this year felt different. He was a few weeks away from turning twenty-six, the countdown that always seemed to be present in the back of his mind getting louder. Plus, he found himself stationed less than an hour from his grandparents who he had spent precious little time of his life with. So here he was at a Memorial Day picnic, trying not to think of all the deaths in service that he had personally experienced.

He head snapped up from where he was doodling in a small notebook when he noticed someone approaching. "Sergeant," he greeted with a nod. "Uh, yeah, actually my grandparents are around somewhere." Gone for a walk by the lake, last he'd seen. "Didn't expect to see you here either."

Despite the fact he wouldn't actually recognise Russo's grandparents, Judd used the 'around somewhere' as an excuse to scan the crowd. Mostly, the lakeside wasn't busy enough that anyone was encroaching on anyone else's bubble, though as the sun sank lower and the music got louder, that might well change. "Good to see them?" he asked. "I don't even think I know if you're the only grandchild." Probably, at some point, Russo had mentioned whether he had brothers or sisters back home, but even that didn't account for potential cousins.

Pressing his lips together to hold back a sigh, Judd shrugged. "Kids from the high schools will be here," he pointed out, "and their parents." It didn't look great if your official Army Recruiter didn't show his face at one of the most significant events of the year, even Judd could see that. Once it was dark, and nobody would be able to say for sure he'd gone, he'd slip away again. "At least there's no fireworks," he said, with a laugh that was nearly lacking in bitterness. Fireworks at military events around a bunch of veterans always seemed so stupid, and yet it sure didn't stop people.

He shouldn't have sent that last text to her especially when the cookies had shown up to her. Too many of the people around them had made them both feel like they needed to be watched over and told what to do. He was thirty-five for fuck's sake and his father treated him like he had during his first transformation in the woods behind their house.

Even if she didn't want to see him after than he need to at least tell her he was sorry, he wasn't either of their fathers and if they were to be living together full time then he'd need to stop acting like it. He'd worn an easy blue shirt that had been buried in the back of his closet and a pair of shorts to compliment. He had no doubt Maria was wearing something that would make him have to remember that he was almost two decades older than her, but she hear him out. And if that didn't work the peace offering he'd bought at the liquor store would have to suffice.

Maria hadn't been psyched about the BBQ, but she also knew Amy and Craig expected her there - to be "part of the community sooner or later" - and so she'd thrown on shorts and a tank and had run a brush through her long, unruly curls. She had brought a bunch of bags of chips as an offering and then grabbed herself a seat by the lake. She didn't feel like 'part of the community' and she was pretty sure the only one around her she knew well - Eric - wanted nothing to do with her being part of the goddamned community. It wasn't her fault their dad's had foisted her off on him. In fact, she didn't even want it! Why should he take it out on her?

In fact, if he hated the idea so much, why didn't he tell them off for it? Maria didn't have any choice - Pack Daddy was her Leader and she literally was compelled to listen to him, and Daddy controlled her trust! She had to do what they wanted. He didn't! He was a grown man!

When the tall shadow fell over her chair, she looked up from behind her Dior sunglasses and sighed. "I've already told you it was their idea." Her tone was deadpan. She looked back to the lake as if to dismiss the conversation.

Just as he thought. His reaction was as visceral as it had been at the garden party. That dress was something completely its own, but it didn't help that he had to worry about the fact that she didn't seem to be wearing a bra. He still had a chance to turn around and let her do her own thing today. There might be a chance that Gael or Jani had shown up and he could forget about the whole thing and leave the bottle of Patron on the kitchen table for when she got back.

"Rightly pissed." What was it about her that made him want to match her energy and dish it back to her? Nothing about this situation would have helped with him being equally shitty. He took the seat next to her and set the green box on the armrest of her chair, "Thanks for the cookies." She still hadn't looked at him and he didn't blame her.

Benji & Robert
[info]earthtobenji
2024-05-25 09:45 pm UTC (link)
If he were being honest with himself, and he did usually try to be, Benji was both hoping that Kate would come to this BBQ and that she wouldn't. Trying to figure out what he wanted there was no less difficult than before he'd talked to his sister about it, but he did know that, at the very least, he was hoping for her friendship. Whether there would be more kisses in their future was yet to be seen, but he'd never been the sort to be casual about even that level of intimacy, and he didn't want his divorce from Laney to change him like that.

What he could do, Benji thought, was distract himself with finding Emilia's person and introducing himself, keeping in mind her warning that he might be a bit moodier than his normal levels. The man wasn't difficult to spot, both Iris and Emilia's descriptions quite apt. He approached from the front, in full view, and offered him a friendly enough expression without being over-the-top sunshine-y.

"Hey, Robert, right?" he said, holding out his hand. "I'm Benji. I know Emilia had wanted to introduce us the other night, but I ended up heading out early, so I thought I'd do it now," he explained.

Re: Benji & Robert

Robert was surprised anyone at this thing - well, anyone but Judd or Heather or Em - would approach him. Irish and Lysette fully understood today was a day to steer clear of him, and the others knew they could offer him an understanding that he wouldn't seek out on his own, but could definitely use. So when the tall, blond man approached him - smart, from the front with a friendly hand extended - the shock was probably apparent on his face for a split second. And then the man spoke, and introduced himself and recognition took over Robert's scowl and he gave a tight-lipped smile, not wanting to offend the most important person in Emilia's life.

He put out his hand in a sturdy shake, and he said, "Benji, I've heard a lot about you. Robert Kerr," he introduced himself. It probably wasn't the most friendly introduction ever, but it was one of Robert's.

"Sorry to have missed you the other night," had he left Emilia had him behind that tree? Fuck, that was rude of Robert, was it?

There was no mistaking the tightness of the other man's jaw or the curt tone he used, and Benji wondered if it might have been better to postpone this introduction. But he'd given it plenty of thought and assumed that putting it off longer would just make it more awkward in the long run. Regardless, he was here, and it was done, and he would just need to navigate it as smoothly as he could.

"Don't sweat it," he said lightly, shaking his head. "I don't really want to bother you, I just thought it would be a good idea to put faces to names. Em, Heather, and Iris all spoke highly of you," he explained, though he wondered if Robert might feel better if he excused himself now that they'd officially been introduced.

Logan and Dani
[info]horsecode
2024-05-25 10:28 pm UTC (link)
There were a lot of human things that Logan didn't understand. Many of them, he didn't really try to understand, but ever since his decision to enlist for the Second World War, he had made an effort to understand the ways that humans interacted with issues surrounding war and death and grief. It still didn't come easily; most of the people Logan had served with had died by now, whether that was during the war or from natural causes since. Until he'd moved to Tarrytown, he'd been certain that most people at this kind of event weren't really honouring the people he'd known, but rather those that had died within his lifetime.

Tarrytown was different, though. Even if Logan had yet to (knowingly) make any connections with anyone else as long-lived as he was. Here, there might be others who remembered the same battles he did, or even earlier ones. His expression, as he wandered the crowd, was more 'determined' than 'thoughtful', but that was just how Logan's face behaved. He hadn't really thought he'd spot anyone he recognised, and by his second circuit he accepted to himself that he wasn't going to.

Stomach somewhat rumbling from the smell of the burgers, he approached the tables of food. By instinct, he positioned himself next to the very pretty woman also waiting for the next batch, rather than the elderly man, but he wasn't really thinking anything of it. "The food smells better than it looks," he observed. "What does that do to our odds of it tasting good?"

Growing up with her grandmother, Dani could always be found at every town celebration. The Memorial Day BBQ was no different, just this year Dani had driven her grandmother. The old woman was currently flirting with some old man, seated in a puke green lawn chair, plate balancing precariously in her hands as she spoke with them.

Dani had been distracted by this, when she heard someone ask about the odds of the food actually tasting good. A startled laugh slipped from her, attention now off her grandmother's flirting skills. "I'd say they are fairly good, you just have to avoid anything that looks like it was on the grill too long." She let out a soft hum as her eyes scanned the table, pointing towards a pan that held some hot dogs that were charred black. "Like those, I'd avoid them unless you're one of those people that enjoy your meat very well done," she said.

Today, of all days, the mention of overdone meat took Logan right back to the meals he'd eaten in France, the ones that, eventually, had prompted him to learn to cook well. His chuckle didn't quite ring true, but there was probably a lot of that around today. "No, I don't find charcoal to be particularly appetising," he promised her. "Though, I admit, whoever is behind the grill is going to impress the hell out of me if they can serve up sausages as good as my old boss used to do." That memory, at least, bought a genuine smile. He'd listened to a 45 minute lecture at his boss's daughter's wedding about the provenance of the sausages, and the exact make and model of the grill, and the method of cooking. Arrogant bastard had, in the end, been right that they'd been the best sausages Logan had ever tasted.

"What about you?" Logan asked. Realising it hadn't been a very coherent question on its own, he elaborated, "Best or worst food memory?" He'd leave it up to lady's choice whether she chose to tell him about the worst or the best. And, realising he'd failed to introduce himself, he held out a hand. "Logan. New in town." At this rate, people were going to start thinking that was Logan's actual surname.

Sofia showed up at the lakeside a little later than she had originally planned on. Apparently finding clothes that would encourage her to keep from working – as she had claimed not to do today - was harder than she had thought. But she figured she had managed alright. And if not, well, too bad. She had tried, and though not much of a cook herself, she had taken the easy – and delicious – way out, and had stopped by Sweetgrass Grill on the way, to pick up a big bowl of their Kale Ceasar.

Salad deposited on the picnic table, she hoisted her bag up on her shoulder and went in search of a place to sit. Aaron, the cameraman that had been sent to cover Julián’s appearance at the barbecue seemed to spot her immediately, though as he raised his hand in greeting, she quickly shook her head and made a cutting gesture in front of her neck to get him to stop. “I’m not here today,” she mouthed to him, before she sent him a bright smile and continued her search for a place to sit.

Barbeques didn't hold much appeal to Jude considering she didn't have to eat, but her resolution to be more social this year had been relatively successful so far, and so she'd decided to go to the barbeque and mingle at least a little bit. And if she happened to get a few minutes with Astrid, she wouldn't complain. She did, at least, know a good portion of the community, even if they might not know her.

She had also cheated and picked up a dessert from the supermarket, a classic apple pie, which she'd deposited on the desserts table before wandering around. She was mildly proud of herself for branching very slightly out of her usual dark garb, donning a striped shirt and jeans with a simple pair of sneakers.

Jude recognized Sofia, though she wouldn't be surprised if the other woman didn't recognize her at all. But she'd noticed that hand motion, and amusement had tickled at her, and she simply couldn't resist striking up a conversation. "I'm assuming you weren't ordering a beheading," she said, foregoing introductions for the moment. "So was someone being mischievous and you were telling them to cut it out?" Nosy, yes, but she'd never claimed to have the best social graces.

“Uhm…” Sofia chuckled when she had been caught long-distance communicating with a cameraman who apparently was as bad at recognizing her ability to not work as Julián was. “Give me a minute, and it might be exactly what you’re assuming,” she laughed, turning around to see a woman who… she had seen her before, but where? The recognition was clear in her eyes, but so was the fact that she couldn’t precisely place the other woman.

“I was trying to let my cameraman know, that I’m not here to work today, so he’ll have to deal with Mr. News on his own today,” she explained, before she shook her head. “I’m sorry, but where have I met you before? It’s right there, I just…” reaching out she made a small grabbing gesture as if she was trying to capture that one specific memory of when she had last talked to her.

Eric felt lighter now that it seemed that Maria didn't hate him at least. He still didn't understand how she felt unwanted, he'd hoped she now understood that the apartment was her space too.

The smell of hot dogs and burgers had pulled him away from their conversation. He'd left her with the bottle of tequila he'd brought. The queue was moving at a jagged pace and he tried his best not to knock into anyone. Thinking he had the rhythm he moved forward as the blonde in front of him stopped short, "Shit, I'm so sorry."

For once, Emilia’s shift hadn’t gone too late, but it was still almost dinner time before she had managed to get showered and dressed after her workday. It’d hadn’t exactly been a hectic day, but busy enough, that she hadn’t managed to find time for lunch, other than the half banana she had been offered by one of the nurses as she had gone from one delivery room to the other.

Getting in line by the food, she was texting Robert to let him know that she was here, but that she needed food now, and that she would find hi- she missed a step when the queue moved, making her stop to regain her balance, only to find it challenged once more, when the big guy behind her hadn’t seen her stopping. “Sokay,” she managed, her hands reaching out for anything that could keep her upright, thus ending up with a fistful of his shirt sleeve. “It’s okay,” she repeated with a chuckle, embarrassed about her own distraction. “I think that was my fault,” she sorta-apologised, turning around to look up at him, only to once again stop for a beat, while she digested what she was seeing. This guy was almost too obviously gorgeous for her tastes, but gorgeous nonetheless, and with an air about him that wasn’t wholly human. What it was, she didn’t know, but she liked it. “My apologies… sir.”

Aziraphale. Sort of open.

Aziraphale had taken several attempts over a number of years to truly understand the distinction between the ways America looked at and ‘celebrated’ Memorial Day and the way England and the UK looked at Remembrance Sunday. Of course he didn't really belong to either place, but the UK was far more familiar and it took him several repetitions over a number of years to fully grasp the difference.

He didn't come every year, but when he did he tended to bring something slightly British for the table. Or sometimes French since it was one of his favourite cuisines. This year he had brought a tray of mini scone halves pre-made up with jam and clotted cream with just a touch of encouragement for the cream not to melt applied.

After dropping it off he steeled himself. He had been in or near too many wars. He had seen too many things and watched so many fall. He had seen the first Fall. Nothing he knew of could take away those memories for him, that pain. Much of it had been a long time ago and the wounds had lessened, but it all still hurt. Nobody could do anything for him, but he could do something for these people. Just a little to ease one day. He never did much for an individual person, just gave them a few hours of slightly more peace about their feelings of loss and pain, reduced the discomfort of an old injury so the event was bearable, gave distance from painful memories and the like. It gave him a little peace to be able to help as he meandered through the people.

When she'd told Sam she had the weekend off, a rarity for her in the warmer months, and he'd mentioned the community barbeque for Memorial Day, it had been a no brainer to decide to come along. She'd spent enough time visiting Tarrytown to know a few people, and she enjoyed the close-knit community feel of it, even if she was still warming up to the idea of officially coming out with her nature herself.

What she hadn't expected was to see a face she hadn't seen in over one hundred thirty years. Domenico, her big brother, had aged some since the last time she'd seen him, but wasn't that to be expected when one went off to war? Her fingers squeezed around the plastic red cup in her hand, her eyes completed fixed on the two men across the way, seemingly deep in conversation. Was it possible that it wasn't him? Was it just someone who looked so similar? But she'd assumed for over a hundred years that her entire family was dead, that even the Coming Out hadn't made her wonder. But here, now... that was Domenico.

Her hands started shaking, the magic swirling inside of her, already riled up by the painful emotions radiating from several of the attendees, and she fought to tamp it down.

Aubrey was not having a good weekend. She wasn't the greatest fan of extra days off at the best of times, if she hadn't made specific plans about what to do with them. This one was made much worse by the fact that the mental image of surprising Reggie by throwing herself at him had refused to fade, even as the rest of the heightened emotions from the party dipped back to their usual levels. Needing something productive to do with her Monday away from work, she'd spent the early afternoon making large batches of apricot kiffles, which mostly used ingredients she already had in her store cupboard.

Then, at around the time Memorial Day festivities had been scheduled to start, she'd carried them down to the lake and set them on one of the tables still in the process of being set up. Naturally, since help was obviously needed, Aubrey made herself useful: both personally helping to do things and also directing other volunteers around to where she could see tasks unfinished. By the time the lakeside really started to fill, she was feeling (slightly) more settled, and decided to take herself out of her role of 'helper' and back into the position of a guest.

Given Reggie's feelings about the military, she could be reasonably confident he wouldn't be here, so Aubrey didn't look for him. Instead, not feeling like socialising, she people-watched with interest. Perhaps it was her own heightened feelings, or just years of dealing with an anxiety disorder, that made her notice the trembling hands of a woman standing near her. "Tell me to mind my own business if this question is unwelcome," she began, "but are you okay?"

From what she had seen on the community boards Tarrytown had its fair share of excitement and whiles she was kicking herself that she hadn't pulled the trigger a week earlier so she could partake in what had be a fun time, a simply Memorial Day barbecue would hopefully make it easier to get to know some of the locals.

The breeze coming off the lake had her wishing she would've brought her seal skin with her instead of home in her safe. Her jeans and white tank would have to suffice. She set down a pack of napkins and individual chip bags and poured herself a cup of lemonade ready to make new friends.

As the sun had started to set and the light started to fade, the bonfire had been lit. There were still a lot of people by the lake, though even with the big fire right in front of them Emilia had started to feel a little cold, and her full day at work was starting to make itself known. Though she knew she could have simply told Robert and he wouldn’t have hesitated to take her home, she wasn’t ready for that for the simple reason that he had not made any moves to go home just yet. Instead, they had sat down on a blanket, and she had moved to sit between his legs with his arms around her and his chest pressed against her chest.

She rested her head against his arm, and smiled at the way his slow, steady breathing made a few loose strands of her hair, tickled against her ear. Slowly the calm settled between them, and as her breath turned slower and deeper, so did his. She loved the way he could make her feel warm, safe and desired without even trying, but what she cherished even more, was that her calm seemed to calm him, too. She hoped that never changed. Gently, she pressed a soft kiss to the side of his hand, and closed her eyes to savor the moment.
