Entry tags:!50 pts (plot), !group scene, !plot scene, harry dresden, rick grimes, seymour birkhoff, tessa

characters: Everyone!
setting: The ballroom in the apartment building, on the first floor, tonight
summary: the senior partners throw a party, and everyone better be there
rating/warnings: maybe high
status: in progress

---

The ballroom was all set up for the party. The Senior Partners instructions had been clear. Everyone would be in attendance, or there would be serious consequences. And they hadn't been joking. They did try to make it fun for everyone though, and everyone would have found a variety of costumes to choose from waiting in their apartments, well before the party. Maybe this was their way of making up for the horrible things they'd put them through, or maybe it'd just be fun to watch them be all paranoid.

It was the party of the year, and no one was allowed to miss it. All they had to do now was wait.

Tessa was there, in the background. She didn't bother with a costume, since she could make her own. She just went as herself. Or at least a version of herself. There were so many different views and interpretations of the mythos. Everyone who looked at her would probably See something different. Some might not even See her at all.

But she was there.

Birkhoff had taken pieces of several different, entirely uncoordinated costumes and put them together, topped with a hat and scarf, and stuck a sticker on his lapel that said, Hello, I'm THE DOCTOR. He had even build his very own Sonic, which was really just a tricked-out digital pen, but hey. He thought it looked pretty damn cool.

Harry Dredsen was present, dressed in a voluminous, black, hooded cape, looking a bit like the Grim Reaper but calling himself the Ghost of Christmas Future. He'd modeled his costume off the old film of A Christmas Carol, in all its dark glory--but in truth, Christmas Yet to Come was his icon of hope that Winter was not Forever. His own subtle rebellion against his own personal White Witch.

Okay, so he was a nerd, and he was making a million and one fandom references that only those who knew him well would truly understand. But he didn't care. Underneath the cape, he was armed for the apocalypse.

Rick, in uniform, did a sweep of the building on his way down to the ballroom, making sure there were no stragglers. He didn't want to leave anyone to whatever fate the Partners had in store for him. He also wanted to make sure there were plenty of eyes on the ballroom itself.

It occurred to him that maybe their hosts just wanted them all out of their rooms to plant something there while they weren't looking, but there wasn't much he could do about that unless someone had a way to tap into the security system. That was a bit out of his league.

With his custom made leather jacket bearing a set of angel wings, Daryl considered himself dressed up like an angel. He knew it was a lame costume, but he didn't care, he had no interest in putting any effort into his attire.

"Rick." He acknowledged the sheriff with a nod, an almost defiant lift of his chin. Rick was the only person Daryl knew from before, in this place. He supposed if he could have chosen who would show up in hell to fight by his side, it'd be Rick. He just worried about the ones they left behind.

"'S fucked up, yeah?" He turned his head, gesturing vaguely at the ballroom. He wasn't exactly straggling, he just hadn't made it all the way to the party yet.

Rick doffed his hat, and fell into stride with his good friend. He hoped they'd at least get an A for effort, making sure nobody else was left out, but he couldn't help wondering if the doors were going to be sealed shut when the clock struck the appointed hour, or what.

He nodded, letting out an exasperated breath. "Yeah. But what else is new?"

Daryl sighed. "Times like this, I wonder if we're really better off here." Not that he wanted to go back to the zombie apocalypse, but at least he knew what to expect, and he knew what his role was there. Every day he woke up was counted as a miracle, and sometimes there were surprise attacks or whatever, but the enemy was, more or less, a known entity. Here there was too much uncertainty, too many possibilities to prepare for them.

"And times like this 'M glad you're here with me," he added, once again looking Rick over. He trusted the others from their group, sure, but none so much as he trusted Rick. He knew Rick had his back, whatever happened.

Rick had to admit, it was hard to ever really relax, wondering what might come at them next. Sometimes he felt like he was sleeping with one eye open, or at least sleeping only very lightly, ready to jump up and fight or flee at a moment's notice. Maybe he'd get used to it, but until then? He just tried to eat hearty and stay fit to make up for the constant state of hyper-vigilance.

"Glad you're here, too," he said, "You keep me sane."

"That ain't no easy task neither," Daryl said, but tried to lessen the truth of it with a wry smile. Rick seemed to have his shit together a little more now, than the first few weeks after Lori died. Daryl had been legitimately concerned there for a while, when it seemed Rick had gone off the rails.

"What d'you reckon's going down tonight?" Daryl gestured toward the ballroom. The threats to get everyone to attend had been frequent enough to show whoever these senior partners were, they meant business. Daryl had several theories, but he had no real idea what was going to happen.

Rick gave a wry smile in return, knowing he'd been pretty far gone after Lori's death. Even before that, the news of the affair, the explosive tension between himself and Shane, Carl's accident, Sophia's disappearance...all of it had help to push him to the breaking point. But he'd come back. Slowly, but surely, he'd pulled himself back together, with help. A whole heck of a lot of help, for which he was eternally grateful.

If he'd been thrown into this new hell without Daryl, or someone to keep him in line? God only knew how quickly he would fall apart again.

"I don't know," he said, "The mind comes up with all kinds of scenarios, and I'm just trying to figure out how to prepare for as many of them as I can."

Daryl moved the sides of his jacket back revealing a gun and two knives. He'd have been entirely more comfortable with his bow, but it didn't fit his angel costume. He was prepared, all the same, to defend himself and others if he needed to.

He let his jacket fall back into place. "I don't like not knowing just who and what the enemy is." At least they didn't have Carl and Lil Asskicker to look after. Everyone who came to this place seemed to be an adult, so hopefully most of them were also thinking along the same lines and establishing their own personal defenses.

"Nor do I," Rick agreed, "But maybe tonight will provide us with some clues." And maybe it wouldn't, but if they could make it through the night without somebody being killed, he'd consider it a good night. "Want to walk the perimeter, see if we find anything?"

"It ain't a bad idea." Daryl nodded. Just like old times, he thought, though the situation couldn't be much different. There were still people to protect, but Daryl didn't feel any particular attachment to any of them. Rick, though, Rick was family. Rick was his brother in all the ways that really mattered.

"Reckon we best get it done before the party starts." Not that Daryl wanted to go, but he wasn't sure he wanted to risk the punishment for not going.

Rick nodded, and strode into the ballroom, trusting Daryl to be right behind him. "Maybe we'll get lucky. Although I'm not sure whether lucky would mean finding something, or nothing."

"Guess we just wait and see." Not a prospect Daryl was looking forward to.

Several people were already gathered. Daryl felt a heavy sense of dread for all of them, but there was hardly anything he could do about it.

"And stay at each other's backs." Because if all hell broke loose, he knew the only way they would survive would be together.
