Who: Rick and Daryl
What: Meeting up, hanging out, not killing zombies
Where: In town
When: This week
Warnings: Will update if necessary

He gauged the time to be about a month now, that he'd been in the city. He'd never been to LA before, and some tricked out hell version of LA was not his idea of fun. He couldn't say he missed Georgia, especially not the Georgia he'd left behind, but since he had been seeing walkers everywhere lately, maybe he'd prefer the world where they were actually real, and killable. Instead of taking down a zombie with his arrow, he'd tagged a vampire...and found out that while walkers weren't infesting the city as he'd thought, vampires were very real and prowling the streets. He'd take the walkers over the vamps, because at least walkers didn't blend in with humans, there was no mistaking the rotten flesh, the blood stained clothes, the wheezing hiss that sounded like a swarm of bees where there were too many of them all in one place.

When he saw Rick, he stopped and stared for a moment. It wasn't shock at seeing his friend, but rather he wasn't sure Rick was real. The zombies he'd seen so recently weren't real, after all, and he'd been so sure they were invading the city. All was quiet now, though, and so he called out to Rick. Seemed the best way to determine if his friend was real or imagined.

"You'd have to take that up with Carl," Rick said, smiling. He'd been so out of it after Lori's death, and even in the time leading up to it, their Little Asskicker was lucky someone had he presence of mind to call her something. To give her the care that she'd needed to thrive. When he'd finally come out of his daze, Rick had begun to realize just how much he owed Daryl for stepping up like that.

"Seems like you're quite the family man, under all the dirt and scruff."

Daryl rolled a shoulder. "I reckon that's your fault. Sure as hell ain't because of Merle or nothing." Daryl wouldn't give his parents credit for anything positive in his life and while Merle had some influence on him, it was Rick who taught him to stand up straight and be part of a family, and Daryl was grateful for it.

"I don't know," Rick said, shrugging his shoulders. "Maybe." But Daryl had been the one to spearhead the search for Sophia, back before he and Rick had really gotten to know each other all that well. Rick suspected there was family loyalty in Daryl all along, some desire that Rick had merely helped to nurture. Maybe sometimes the apple didn't fall far from the tree, but sometimes the seed could be carried a long way before it put down roots.

"Anyway, I'm glad they're not here. Don't trust this place not to turn around and bite us in the ass."

Daryl shook his head. "Me neither. Already done it. I shot someone, convinced it was a walker. She...wasn't no walker, though. And she's all right. My arrow didn't hurt her none." Not at all, really. She'd yanked it out like there as nothing to it. "She was a vampire instead, Rick," Daryl confessed. How the hell were they supposed to deal with that kind of threat?

"What the hell..." Rick's words trailed off as he realized that the answer was in the question. "What happened to the whole stake through the heart thing? You're too good of a shot not to have hit her someplace vital." And if Daryl had put the arrow through an eye...Rick didn't want to know.

"I guess we all invest in katana, and start taking heads."

"I'm all for that." Except that vampires could appear human, and might be harder to detect. They couldn't kill everyone on the off hand chance they might be a vamp. But neither could they let the blood sucking monsters roam the city...Before he'd met Rick, Daryl would have killed indiscriminately, but he was a different man now.

"We're gonna have to keep a sharp eye out. Maybe start patrolling. We catch anybody trying to snack on passers-by..." Rick drew a finger across his neck. "Zero tolerance." Maybe he was being hyper-vigilant, but he coudn't help it.

"Agreed." If Daryl could ID them on sight, he'd kill them all. Which didn't explain why he'd let Anna go, but he supposed there wasn't much he could do about that now.

"Call me crazy, man, but I'd rather be back in Georgia. At least we knew what to expect, there." And they had family, more than each other. Here it seemed it was just the two of them against the world.

"Yeah." Rick nodded. "I can't say I blame you." This place was all kinds of unpredictable, and seemed only likely to get worse. "But if there's anything we've learned in the past few years, it's how to adapt, to survive."

"Damn right." And maybe it'd be easier with just the two of them. He felt bad for even thinking it, because the group of them had become something of a family, but two alone could move easier and cover more ground in far less time than a whole crew of people. It was survival, and while Daryl would never leave the others behind that was out of their hands. They simply weren't here, it was only Rick and Daryl now and Daryl was a little bit glad for it.
