Title: Interpreting Draconis
Team: AU! (YES! We rock!)
Author: [info]dacro
Prompt: 2. "Time is Galleons, little bro, time is Galleons."
Wordcount: 11,043
Rating: R
Warnings: Implied minor character death.
Summary: Draco, the Deaf son of a wealthy businessman, has always had the best of everything, including a habit for rapid signing and a reputation for having a short fuse. When his father disappears, the interpreters who have been on the receiving end of Draco's attitude and temper refuse to work for him. Enter Harry, our 'new on the block' interpreter with a heart of gold, exemplary skills, and a few secrets in his pocket.
Author's Note: Deaf: capital D is used for someone who uses sign language as their primary means of communication, is involved in the larger Deaf community and follows collective cultural norms.

Thank you to [info]djin7 for the vital brainstorming session, to the [info]hd_worldcup mods for yet another opportunity to research and have the time of my life, to all my AU teammates for keeping morale up and to my beta army: [info]saladbats, [info]joanwilder, [info]lusiology, [info]thesamanthahope, [info]kirinin and [info]dracofiend. You are the best cheerleaders an author could hope for.

This fic... it SOOOOO GOOD!

I've been chanting that for the past 10 minutes. It's so amazing, and PERFECT. The characters are completely themselves - Harry and Draco and Hermione.

Now, I generally don't read AU fics, and I've been working my way through this fest and reading them, but this is the first one that I've felt a deep need to sit back and say OMG, this is one of the best things I've read so far!

Maybe I'm biased. My grandmother was deaf. Completely deaf from the time she was 14 years old. She never learned sign language, because they were depression kids and nobody had moey for school. But she became an expert lip reader.

So, I recognized a lot of what was going on. Email was her lifeblood after we got her a Web TV machine. She could suddenly be in touch with people she'd only written letters to - her sister, her nieces and nephews, neighbors...

And even aside from all of that, this fic was lovely. Draco doing what had to be done. Harry standing up for himself, and charging ahead, bully the consequences. It was perfectly lovely!

GAH! I'm so sorry I didn't comment sooner! I totally forgot we were posting over here as well as LJ! *headdesk*

now that that's out of the way, thank you so much for your comments and sweet praise for the fic. *hugs*

We must be kindred spirits or something, because I had the EXACT same story with my grandma! She started losing her hearing as a teen, and by the time I was born, she was deaf. She never learned to sign either, and unfortunately, she passed away in the mid 80's before the technology caught up. But I'm so happy to be here in the age of blackberry/sidekicks and video phones that make communication so much easier for my Deaf friends.

I also wanted to thank you for taking a chance on this AU story. It means so much to me that you believed Harry and Draco in this setting. *more hugs*
