Summary: As a teacher in Hogwarts, Harry's life seems set, but that changes when a new teacher arrives.
Author's Notes: Thanks to my beta for a great job. If anyone is interested, I got the idea for this story while watching a movie couple of months ago. It was about a love triangle between two men and a woman (who were also teachers, by the way-that's why I had the idea to make a post Hogwarts story with our favourite characters).
Chapter 1: The New Arrival
Harry stared outside the window, watching the people, his friends and colleagues, as they enjoyed their last free day of their summer break. Tomorrow, all the students would arrive, marking the beginning of a new school year at Hogwarts.
It was hard to believe it had been ten years since he graduated, along with his best friends Ron and Hermione and all the others who were in the same year. It was a quiet celebration, after all the war finished only a couple of weeks before, leaving the new generation of witches and wizards to rebuild the Wizards world. There were some students missing at the ceremony, some were injured and couldn't attend and those who joined the dark side were either killed or imprisoned.
A loud yell brought Harry out of his thoughts and he turned to see Fred and George being chased by three little kids. Harry smiled, the Weasley twins were once again the heart of the party, bringing with them their new tricks. Their business was doing very well in all these years and although they were both married and had a lot of responsibilities regarding the shop and their own children, they still remained unworried like they were in their school years. Both of their wives, Fred's wife Angelina and George's wife Lucy, were also involved in the business, taking care of the advertisement and finances. Both families also lived next to each other in a small village outside London.
Harry's attention went from them to Ron, who was currently involved in a conversation with one of the teachers, Jack, a flying instructor and like Ron, a big fan of the Chudley Channons. Harry was glad Ron could make it today, together with his wife and two children. They didn't see each other very often, since Harry lived at Hogwarts for the large part of the year and Ron was busy running his department in the Ministry. He became an Auror after graduation, and after ten years he was now the head of the Aurors. Ron was married to Padma and had two children, an eight year old girl named Kelly and a five year old son, named Marcus. Ron and Padma became a couple in their seventh year, much to everyones surprise, even Harry's. They all expected Ron to end up with Hermione, but they never went further than friendship. To Harry it was funny how Ron and Padma got together, since they didn't exactly click in the fourth year when they went to the dance together and Ron basically ignored Padma, but somewhere in the middle of their seventh year, they suddenly showed an interest in each other and went on a date. After that day, they were inseparable.
They dated for two years before Ron finally proposed to Padma and they got married eight years ago, with Padma already expecting their first child. But even if Harry didn't see Ron very often, they still remained best friends. There were also some more of Harry's friends who could come, like Seamus Finnigan, a reporter at the Daily Prophet, who showed up with Ginny and shocked the entire Weasley family by announcing their engagement. The Weasleys had no idea Ginny was seeing anyone, let alone Seamus, but as Seamus was one of Ron's friends, they all accepted him into their family. The family was getting bigger and bigger with every year, since Bill and his wife Fleur also expected a child, while Percy and Penelope just got back from their second honeymoon. Charlie was the only member of the Weasleys who was single.
To Harry, they were like a real family. He was happy they were all doing well. Harry sighed and decided to join his friends outside. He wasn't very fond of the parties, but Hermione insisted on having a picnic, before they had to go back to their work. It would be months before either of them could see each other again. Harry stepped outside and looked at the big castle. Hogwarts. It became his home in all those years he was in school. After graduation, Professor McGonagall asked him to stay and take over the Defence Against the Dark Arts class. She became the new Headmistress, after Dumbledore died in the final battle. It was a sad time for Harry and all who loved Albus, but life had to continue and since Harry didn't want to go back to the Dursleys, he happily accepted.
''Harry!'' Harry was brought out of his thought as someone called his name. He turned round and spotted a smiling young woman with brown hair waving at him. He smiled at Hermione. She always liked these sort of things, these gatherings, while Harry hated them. They were so different, yet they became friends in school. Hermione was also one of the teachers at Hogwarts. She taught Charms and was the Head of Gryffindor House. After graduation, she started working at the Ministry, but after four years, she decided to quit, since it didn't bring her any joy. She soon got an offer from McGonagall to teach and she accepted without thinking twice.
Harry was glad to have at least one of his best friends near. He and Hermione spent a lot of time together and became even closer and with time, their feelings for each other became more intense. Soon, their relationship shifted from friendship, to lovers. After almost five years, they were still together.
Hermione was currently dancing with Neville Longbottom. Harry had to smile at the sight of Neville. He was probably the one who changed the most since Harry first met him. Neville transformed from a shy, clumsy boy to a confident young man. He, like Harry, stayed at Hogwarts after graduation, but unlike Harry, didn't take over one of the classes. Two weeks before graduation, Professor Sprout talked to Neville, offering him a position of her assistant. She planned to retire in a couple of years and needed someone to take over from her. Neville was her first choice. He was always her best student and after five years of learning side by side, Neville took over not just her classes, but also became the Head of Hufflepuff House when she retired. He was also very popular among the students, always open for their problems. In all this time he became very close with Hermione. Harry even suspected him being in love with her, but Neville never did anything about it and after he and Hermione got together, Neville still stayed close to both of them.
''Harry, come dance with us.'' Hermione motioned to Harry to join them. Harry just shook his head.
''No, no. Enjoy yourself.'' Hermione made a disappointed face, but Harry knew she was pretending as she soon burst out laughing. She and Neville began dancing again. Harry went to one of the tables and took a bottle of watter. He watched his girlfriend laughing, enjoying herself. He felt very lonely sometimes, even now with so many people around him. Lately he often had that feeling, like there was something missing in his life. Sure he had Hermione and he loved her, but there were no sparks when he saw her, no butterflies in his stomach. Everything was a routine. He was really confused. He didn't want to lose her, but on the other hand, he couldn't live like that forever. It wouldn't be fair to him and her. Harry hoped his feelings would go away.
''Hey mate.'' Ron put a hand on Harry's shoulder, surprising him. He didn't even notice Ron approach. ''You ok?''
''Yes Ron.''
''You don't look like you're having fun.''
''You know I don't like parties.''
''I know.'' Ron grinned.
''But I'm glad you're here.'' Harry embraced Ron. ''So, tell me all the news.'' They both smiled and began exchanging stories from their life, from those months they didn't see each other. Harry told Ron about his classes and students, about the trip he and Hermione had that summer, although Ron already knew about it from Hermione, and Ron told Harry all about his work and about the children, the family. For Harry it was just like old times.
**
Hermione was talking with Ginny, when she saw a good looking blonde man approach. She excused herself and went towards him. She was glad he could make it to the party.
''Hello Draco, I'm glad you came.'' Hermione smiled at Draco and embraced him. She hadn't seen him in years. Seeing Draco and Hermione talk was nothing unusual to their friends, since both of them became friends during the war in their seventh year. Draco even saved her life during one of the attacks in Hogsmeade. After graduation she tried to stay in touch with him, but his constant travelling prevented that. She accidentally met him two weeks ago in Diagon Alley, when she was buying some books for the school library. They had lunch together and talked about the past, his life and all the things they missed out on with each other. When the conversation came to Hogwarts, she offered him a position as a Potions Master. Draco was always good at potions, he even had a degree in that subject, which would qualify him as a teacher.
They really needed a new teacher. School would start soon and they still didn't find a replacement for Snape. A month into a summer vacation, Snape shocked them all by announcing his retirement. He wasn't old but fed up with teaching, or as he said, he had enough of teaching the incopetent brats how to brew a proper potion. Draco didn't think long before he accepted the offered job. He didn't need the money, but was bored from travelling and wanted to do something useful for a change. So with Snape gone, he wouldn't only be the new Potions Master, but also the new Head of Slytherin House.
''Sorry I'm late.''
''It doesn't matter. You're here now.'' Hermione took his hand and led him towards a group of people. ''Come, let me introduce you to some people.'' They stopped next to five men and women engaged in a discussion.
''Sorry to interrupt.'' They all turned to Hermione. ''I would like you to meet our new Potions Master. This is Draco Malfoy.''
''Hello,'' Draco greeted them. They all looked at him for a moment.
''Hi. I'm Sean. So they finally found a replacement for Snape.'' He smiled at Draco and offered him a hand. Draco took his hand and smiled. ''Welcome,'' Sean added.
''Thank youl,'' Draco said.
''Sean isn't a teacher here, you know,'' Hermione cut in. ''He runs a store in Hogsmeade. By the way, this is Andrea.'' She pointed at a woman standing next to Sean. She was in her fourties, a little rounder, but with a friendly smile. ''She's Sean's wife.''
''Nice to meet you.''
''I'm glad you're here Mr. Malfoy.''
''Please, just call me Draco.''
''Alright, Draco.'' She smiled at him. ''So, are you ready to start tomorrow? We didn't give you much time to prepare.''
''I think I'll manage. So what do you teach?''
''History of Magic.''
''Draco, you remember Neville?'' Draco nodded. ''He's our Herbology teacher and the Head of Hufflepuff House.''
''Hello.''
''Welcome. If you have any problems with students from my house, just come to me.''
Draco grinned. ''I will.'' Draco couldn't believe how confident Neville was around a former Slytherin. Hermione quickly introduced him to the rest of the group, an older woman, who taught Transfiguration and a man who taught Arithmancy. After they all got acquainted with each other, Hermione led Draco away.
''They're nice,'' he commented.
''Yes, they are.'' She looked at him. ''If you need anything, don't hesitate to ask me or any of them, ok?'' Draco nodded.
''Hermione, won't you introduce me to your friend?'' A woman stopped before them, smiling. She was young, a couple of years older than Hermione and Draco, with long red hair. Draco could've sworn she was related to the Weasleys.
''Of course Kayla. Draco, this is Kayla. Kayla, this is Draco Malfoy, our new Potions Master.''
''Oh, I've heard you were coming. Welcome.'' Draco took the offered hand and shook it.
''What's your subject?''
''She teaches Muggle Studies,'' Hermione interrupted. ''Come on Draco. I want you to meet someone.''
''Sorry.'' Draco managed to apologize to Kayla, before Hermione dragged him away, leaving a dreamy looking woman behind. Draco observed all the people around him as Hermione led him to the refreshment tables. He recognised a lot of people from his school days, mainly Gryffindors and a lot of red heads, unmistakable the Weasleys. He and Hermione slowly approached a man standing beside one of the tables, showing his back to them. Draco looked at him with interest, from the black hair which framed his face to his perfect lean body, which although covered in jeans and shirt, showed defined muscles underneath. 'If he's a teacher, then this is definitely a big bonus to the job,' Draco thought as he observed the young man.
''Honey.'' Hermione kissed the man. ''He's here.'' Draco felt a pang of jealousy as he saw the kiss. It meant he wouldn't have a chance with him. Draco was gay, he knew that since he was fourteen and fell hard for a boy he could never have, a boy who was unreachable for him. His breath caught as the man turned and smiled at Hermione, exposing his beautiful face for Draco to see. Draco was mesmerised by his eyes, as green as he had seen on only one other person. Harry Potter. 'But he doesn't have glasses,' he thought.
''Draco.'' Hermione turned to him. ''You remember Harry, right?'' She smiled at him. How could he forget him? An object of his obsession, of his dreams. And now, he was standing in front of him, even more gorgeous than before. Draco quickly regained his composure.
''How could I forget my favourite ex rival.'' He offered his hand to Harry, hoping not be turned down. Harry didn't hesitate long, before he took the offered hand. He felt a jolt of electricity go through him, a feeling he had long forgotten about. He quickly looked at Draco to see if he felt it too, but even if he did, Draco's face didn't show it. They stared at each other for awhile, Hermione forgotten. They didn't even notice when she left them alone, glad they were friendly with each other. Harry was the first to break out of stare.
''You don't look like a teacher.'' It was true, he looked more like a spoilt millionaire, who got bored by doing nothing. Other than that, Harry had to admit he looked good with his blonde hair and black shirt and trousers. The thin material perfectly embraced his lean body. Draco smirked at him.
''Neither do you.'' They stared at each other again. ''That was a compliment.'' Draco leaned closer. Harry smiled at him. He suddenly felt someone pulling at his hand and turned to two boys, who were attached at his arm. One was Ron's and the other Fred's.
''Harry, come play with us,'' they both pleaded and began dragging him away. Harry cast a look at Draco, before he let himself be pulled away. Draco watched him leave, smiling slightly at the thought of him and Harry living so close in this castle for months to come. Draco decided to leave the party, after all he met almost everyone of his collegues. And as for the Weasley clan, he could be without talking to them and he still had some stuff he needed to bring to his new home.
Harry was glad for a little distraction from the boys, he was confused about his feelings. He didn't know why he couldn't stop staring at Draco before. But after awhile, he just wanted to be alone, so he left the party unnoticed and instead of going to the apartment he and Hermione shared, Harry decided to go running round the lake. Running was his favoured way of distraction. It gave him opportunity to think, to be alone. Hermione hated to run, so she never came along. And for that he was glad.
