Rating/Status: PG-13; Completed
Night time was falling on Karakura Town, the chill of winter still in the air. Ichigo Kurosaki paused under the light of a nearby lamppost and scowled as he checked his now-stuck CD player. The last two beats to Radiohead's 'Paranoid Android' were stuck on repeat, and the sound of the same notes running together endlessly irritated the redhead beyond belief. His breath came out in visible puffs of air as he checked the status of his precious machine, brow furrowed in concentration.
"Shit! And this is a brand new CD player," Ichigo cursed as he messed with the player a bit longer. After a couple of minutes, he gave it a slap, gave up, and turned the player off, hoping it didn't scratch Ishida's disc -- or else he'd expect a serious chewing out the next time they met. Several other CDs were in the duffel bag slung across Ichigo's chest, but he didn't feel like risking a scratch on any of those either (Ishida had been very close to drawing his bow and arrow Quincy-style, so serious the look on his face was when he handed over his limited edition Elliott Smith EPs to Ichigo as a gesture of music-induced good faith.)
The light of a neon sign flickered on behind him, and Ichigo turned to see a convenience store he had never seen before. He couldn't read all the kanji (a mislaid tarp blocked the top of the sign) but he saw Stop & Go Foodstuffs and figured it was better than nothing (Isshin was going to have to eat the sugary crap Ichigo was forced to buy every week, no matter to him if it sucked).
So Ichigo stepped through the sliding doors only to be temporarily blinded by the florescent lighting above. He blinked once, twice, found himself standing not in a snack shop but a heavily ornate hotel lobby.
He dropped his CD player out of shock, which switched on and played the last twenty seconds of 'Paranoid Android' seamlessly before clicking into silence.
Ichigo did not know whether to laugh or be upset. So he chose both. "Are you fucking kidding me?" he shouted, a grin on his face. Temporal shift or whatever, it was one hell of a trip. He stuffed his CD player into his duffel bag, put his hands in his pockets, and walked to the front desk as casually as possible without breaking something in his awestruck excitement.
He hadn't died, he wasn't in Soul Society, there was no Espada or Hollows to be seen or sensed, but the energy all around him told Ichigo something big was happening and he was a lucky guy to get in on it.
