"You cannot," Kaoru said, as they ran the security wand in a quick pass over his torso again, "possibly be serious."
It squealed a soft little squeal and the security officer looked up, gestured him towards the side with a crook of his finger and Kaoru felt his stomach sink. With his fingers in the air, he tried to answer a question he didn't have the awareness, after a fifteen-hour flight, to try and translate in his head. There were some poking gestures, a few circles drawn, a finger stabbed back at his chest and the guard's eyebrows were furrowing as the others trodded through security behind him, one by one, and lined up to reattach bracelets and wallet chains and the other accessories they had not yet learned to fly without.
The guard said something and Kaoru was too increasingly uncomfortable to recognize it as the word English until the third try. By then, Nora was stepping up behind him; he felt the motion, estimated the height, and turned quickly to shake his head and grab past her at You's sleeve.
"That's okay," he said, quickly, and tried to will quiet self-assuredness into a smile half on the edge of suicide, "that's all right, he's got it," and he pulled Masuda in to speak in his ear.
Good-natured incredulity raised the other man's voice in a "Really?" and Kaoru released him immediately, leant back and re-found a distant corner with his eyes. He tried not to listen to the muted laughter in the familiar voice of their translator; tried to focus on composure, on retaining what element of suave and rockstar he had been feeling, walking through the airport escorted by instruments and cases and his tattoo'd and impractically travel-clothed brethren, before the first beep had gone off on walkthrough. He was unflappable, cool even, and sunglasses hid his eyes and thus saved a portion of the shame.
He could survive this, he told himself silently, with firmly, nonchalantly pursed lips and a resolute five-degree nod. Masuda would explain; the security would say oh, and forget about it, and maybe they wouldn't even laugh in the middle, and he could go sleep on the next flight without having to think about how loudly Toshiya would laugh, when he knew, or if he would even remember.
Kaoru was feeling better when Masuda said "Um" as prologue to an apologetic translation, and the security guard repeated it, two languages at once too clear for Kaoru to block out and pretend he had not heard.
"If the ring can't be removed, then you're going to need to step over here, sir, and remove your shirt to show us."
