"Oi, you, go on now, nothing here to see!"
James turned briefly to see one of his fellow Aurors drive away a few gawking onlookers. They really should put up a magical perimeter to keep the gawkers away while they performed their initial examination of the area, but that would only work on Muggles. Magical people wouldn't be deterred, at least not from looking. They could be kept from crossing the perimeter, but they'd still have a good view of death. James would never understand what drove people to stare, because simple curiosity was such a cruel, disrespectful answer. Then again, maybe he'd just been an Auror too long.
"Murphy, keep those people away," he called out, then turned back to the crime scene at hand.
Part of him was grateful not to have to examine burned bodies this time, but it didn't make this any more pleasant. The victims looked to be a young couple, not married because there were no rings. They didn't look anything alike, but he'd wait for further investigation to determine whether or not they were related. Still, his gut told him they weren't.
The note left on the witch was particularly disturbing. He supposed they had comfirmation now that whoever was behind this definitely hated magical people and was targeting witches and wizards specifically. Hopefully an examination of the note would be able to lead them to the one who wrote it, assuming the paper and/or ink weren't enchanted against it. They probably were, he'd been able to do that sort of thing at Hogwarts. Still, it was more than they had.
James examined the bodies and their placement, the rope, the note, everything as it was as closely as possible, and as quickly. He wanted the photographer to be able to come in right after him and photograph the scene, and then be able to cut those poor people down. It bothered him to leave them there even as long as they had, but it was necessary.
"Hey," he called out to Murphy, "did anyone send that owl to Boss that I requested fifteen minutes ago?"
