SENIOR MONTHLY BONDING

SENIOR MONTHLY BONDING

Monthly bonding is, as always, greeted with mixed enthusiasm. All the seniors will be taking boats out to Lone Wolf Island for a day hike, led by Mrs. O'Hare. There are storm clouds looming, but Mrs. O'Hare is certain that it's not going to be a big deal, and no gosh darn storm's going to keep her grounded!

Everything starts out normal enough, but unfortunately, Mrs. O'Hare's optimism has reached a little too far this time. An intense storm sets in, and the waters are too choppy for the students to return to the mainland. Mrs. O'Hare guides the students through the rain to a neglected old cabin.

"There used to be a mining camp around these parts!" she shouts over the rain. "This guy here's about all that's left. C'mon in, kids!"

Inside is musty, spidery and there's an angry raccoon that needs to be evacuated, but it'll do the trick. With the storm not letting up, it looks as though the seniors will be spending one very miserable night in this cabin with a dinner of granola bars, bananas and oranges. It's a tight fit in there, so everyone get to know your neighbors. Now this is what Mrs. O'Hare calls bonding!

THE HIKE: The earlier part of the day is a nice low impact hike around the island.

THE STORM: The rain hits hard, and everyone follows Mrs. O'Hare, who has an idea!

THE CABIN: There's a small cabin from the late 1800's out here on the island. Everyone crams inside and stays warm with heating charms and snugglepiles.

THE NIGHT: The seniors have to stay overnight. They manage to conjure up basic blankets and pillows, and warming charms are used liberally.

A NOISE: It's about 3:00 AM, when something slams into the side of the cabin, right by Robin Youngblood's snugglepile. WHAT WAS THAT?!?! [Character Y] screams as they see a man outside!! HE'S SCRAPING AROUND THE CABIN, HE'S TRYING TO GET IN, YOU'RE ALL GOING TO DIE. (After ten minutes of panic and shrieking teenagers, it's revealed to be a curious bear.)

THE MORNING: Everyone returns to Gooseberry, cranky but not much worse for wear.

"Reckon I'll get my ass kicked if I ask to change my project idea?" Tabs added wryly, shoving her hands further into her pockets. "I mean, I've got two audition pieces to prepare for the Christmas break on top of all the work."

She looked at Nate, trying to gauge his seriousness. "What is your project, anyway? I don't think I've ever asked."

"I think you'd still be ahead of half our classmates," Nate said, because he is of the "work harder, not smarter" mindset and doesn't see anything wrong with completely scrapping months worth of work if it wasn't perfect. But he is also aware that this is an insane thing to do and he is just insane so don't listen to him if he encourages that.

"I, uh, I'm trying to make some kind of magic cell phones," he says, quietly because he never knows how exactly to explain his idea. "It's...kinda a vague concept right now." Unfortunately. "But if the journals can network, I don't see why we can't get in on that to call people." And stop using stupid fireplaces for everything, you guys.

"You reckon?" Tabitha replied, because she is sorely tempted right now and definitely lacking in confidence that her idea is completely laughable and people will think it is stupid.

"Phones, huh?" she asked, carrying on walking for a while, thinking it over. "Well, it'd be better for a quick talk, that's for sure."

"Oh, I definitely reckon, but what are you doing again?" Nate felt like he remembered she was doing something artistic, but he didn't remember where he heard that from and if that was accurate at all. Probably from Mom & Mom Mags & Crick. It was probably very specifically mentioned by them and Nate was only listening with 50% of his attention.

"Right? And for emergencies. Don't always have a floo, and my mom hates me being off where phones barely work so much." Not to mention the fact that his mom was a muggle and hated letting owls in her house.

Tabitha wasn't offended by Nate not remembering her project. Few people did - it was not something most people thought was going to set the magical world on fire. "I'm looking into designing a simple artistic therapy session. Not, like, a full on course because you'd need psychology training for that, but an example of how art and music together can be soothing when you're stressed and suffering... I just need to figure out how to quantify my damn results" she sighed, running a hand through her loosening hair.

"That's a pretty cool idea" she replied simply, keeping plodding ahead. "I mean, it'd be cool to have voice communication without having to stick your head in the fire."
