QUIDDITCH: February 19, Match #6

RIBBONFIN

EBONHIDE

The forest is hit with morning showers which dry out by noon, although the sky remains gray and overcast when Black Bear and Rainbow Trout fans fill the stands. Despite having already demonstrating during tryouts exactly why they were chosen to lead, Captains Powers and Ogletree have both stepped it up with ambitious new routines, and the crowd’s in high spirits when the match begins.

Coach Thorn throws the Quaffle into the air, to be caught by Chaser Valentine. Opposing Chaser Decourt speeds ahead, swinging into Valentine’s blind side to intercept, but Valentine swiftly tosses the ball to her teammate, and Fairchild scores the first goal of the game. Spurred on by early success, the ladies of Ribbonfin fly circles around Keeper Raza, landing two more goals in the first 14 minutes, while on the Ribbonfin end of the field, Keeper Davenport’s riding high, and blocks two shots from Chaser Webb and one each from Quayle and Decourt.

It takes an entire 20 minutes before Ebonhide manages to break Davenport’s defenses, with Decourt passing to Quayle and Quayle aiming a long shot through the leftmost Ribbonfin hoop—but the other team takes the Quaffle next, and Chaser Alapai bumps the score to 40–10 less than five minutes later. Ribbonfin’s sophomore Beaters are having a strong start too, managing to repeatedly get in the way of Beaters Fiori and Kim, and redirect the Bludgers back at Ebonhide. It’s Fiori who finally slows Ribbonfin’s progress by pushing past a dogged Beater Delgado to slam a Bludger into the middle of Ribbonfin’s tight formation, hitting Alapai in the shoulder. Although Alapai manages to stay on her broom, she taps out to get her arm checked, and Reserve Lewis fills her spot.

While Ebonhide works to catch up, Seeker Hale has her work cut out for her in keeping her opponent away from the Golden Snitch. Bright isn’t looking to end the game early either, but he’s making it his goal to follow the Snitch as closely as possible, waiting for the opportune moment. Hale has to cut off Bright twice, once by the Ribbonfin goal posts and another time above the stands, as the Snitch flits around the field, taunting the Seekers. Around the first hour mark, Webb gets the Quaffle past Davenport, taking the score to 60–40 for Ribbonfin, and a third midair Seeker scuffle has both Hale and Bright losing the Snitch’s location completely.

Five minutes after the hour, Fiori and Kim have wrested control of the Bludgers from Ribbonfin, and their team’s Chasers start coming together. With both Bludgers repeatedly scattering the opposition, Decourt, Quayle and Webb spend the next half-hour stealing, passing and shooting in concert, and Ebonhide ties the game 80–80. Just as they’re about to pull ahead, Chaser Lewis flies right into Quayle’s path. Both try to swerve but too late, and the collision nearly knocks Quayle from his broom and definitely allows Fairchild to fly in and take the Quaffle. Thorn blows his whistle, but not before Fairchild makes a lightning-fast pass to Valentine, who scores. There’s a brief argument on the ground about whether the collision was intentional or an accident, but Thorn rules that Lewis has to sit out, and Alapai rejoins the game.

The dream team’s back together, but Ribbonfin appears to have slowed down, as both teams keep scoring goals, never straying more than 30 points away each other. The match stretches to two hours, and it becomes obvious that it’ll come down to the Snitch. High up, Bright and Hale are still circling the pitch, neither one able to find a sparkle of gold and silver. At exactly 2 hours and 30 minutes, with the score sitting at 150–130 for Ebonhide, Coach Thorn blows the whistle and calls everyone down for a break. While players refresh themselves and cast comfort charms after sitting too long on a broom, Thorn tells Captains Davenport and Fiori that he’s giving this match another half-hour and he’s calling an end, even if no one catches the Snitch.

Seekers Hale and Bright look frustrated, and there’s murmurs in the crowd as everyone wonders where the Golden Snitch could be hiding. The match resumes, everyone doing their best to stay focused, but it’s no surprise that as the minutes tick by, the players are becoming more and more exhausted. Decourt scores two goals past a tired Keeper Davenport. Fairchild is nearly winged in the elbow by Kim, and at one point, Fanning easily distracts Fiori from taking his taking his attention off the Bludger. The audience settles to half-hearted cheers with every new goal, impatient for the Snitch to appear… but it never does. Finally, after three long hours and an anticlimactic finish, Thorn calls the game.

Leo cuts the congratulations shorter than he would, normally. It's equal parts because he really is tired, and because he sees Rafael waiting at the sidelines and would rather be there. He stays a respectful few feet away though at first though, because he is quite sure he's just as disgusting as he feels. "If I touch you now, you'll never want me to again." He explains.

"You think I have never been around someone sweaty before?" Rafael takes two steps closer, defying Leo's claims. After three hours of playing... well, Rafael won't lie and say Leo smells like flowers, but it's not all bad. You don't date jocks without some appreciation for sweat and blood.

"Go take a shower," Rafael commands and raises his hands to Leo's shoulders, "and then," his fingers begin to knead Leo's muscles invitingly, "a shoulder rub? You can even fall asleep during it, I won't mind."

If Leo had been thinking, he at least would've had the courtesy to do a cleaning charm to his jersey, before Rafael got this close. But he can't honestly be bothered to do that right now. His muscles ache with the three straight hours they've spent swinging a bat, and Rafael's fingers bring welcome relief. He won't protest that. Leo even leans up, chancing a very brief but very adoring kiss. He's still not quite sure how he got this lucky. Compounded with his victory today, it all feels like more than he's earned, but he learned long ago to always take victories anyway.

"You're amazing." is probably something he would've had a harder time saying at the beginning of this relationship. He would've had a harder time saying that even three hours ago, when he wasn't so tired, and words didn't fall out of his mouth without his full permission. He doesn't mind. It's true. "I'll try to be better company than that."

Rafael takes a sharp breath at the compliment. There's something about the way Leo says it, dazed with exhaustion and painfully sincere, that makes Rafael's face feel warm. He shakes his head, and smiles, still feeling the kiss on his lips. Leo's successes feel like his own. He feels light.

"You are always good company," Rafael assures him. He has a sudden, embarrassing impulse to say something about how being around even a sleeping Leo is appealing. His imagination provides a brief fantasy about going to sleep and waking up with Leo still there. He takes a deep breath and buries that for now.

"Can I walk back to Ebonhide with you? I will wait patiently while you wash." Alright, maybe a bit impatiently.

"I can promise you I don't snore. At least." Leo attempts to recover a little, gain some of his ground back, instead of letting himself go in to any more embarrassing waters. Like telling Rafael how he wouldn't mind at all going to sleep with him right there. How that might be really good. He lets the thought go for now, smiling softly instead.

"Wouldn't go back without you. I'll be fast; time me?" Because why not make bathing a competition, too.

Seeing Leo smile so softly makes Rafael sigh in a way that might possibly be considered lovestruck. Leo must be unbelievably tired. Rafael had just watched him fly hard for three hours straight with barely any rest, and he's still on his feet.

"Do you have a best shower time?" he asks teasingly, and then takes Leo's arm to guide him towards the locker rooms.

Leo is tired. But he's on a post-match adrenaline high, still. The back of his mind knows there's still a lot of work to do,but that's for later. He has a sigh to be strangely caught up in first. Everything Rafael does still makes him pay close attention. Leo's been watching for months, and he still has to be on point to read every expression. He loves that.

"Four minutes, thirty three and a half seconds. I think." It's a completely made up number, and his equally teasing smirk probably gives that away. It melts a little in favor of real concern, and a touch to the arm guiding his. "Sure you don't mind waiting? I already kept you out here so long."

"I will time you," says the boy who doesn't have a stop watch on his person.

Joking aside, he fixes Leo with a steady, assured look. "I will wait four minutes and thirty four seconds for you if I have to." Alright, maybe still a little joking. It's hard to resist, but he's hushed and sincere when he adds: "Take your time, Leo. I will be here no matter how long it takes."

Leo shouldn't be as charmed or comforted as he is by just that voice, by the easy jokes. And that isn't just because he's tired. The way it gets easier to breathe around Rafael isn't something he's made up. But that's to be expected, he guesses, around someone who loved him.
(If that's what that note with his flowers had meant, and he thought it did. He'd used two different dictionaries.)

"Thank you." Is just as sincere. Leo's hand pulls away very slowly on his few steps towards the showers. "Love you." Sounds like almost an afterthought, but it isn't. It's just time to make sure Rafael knows that too. It's the scariest thing that has ever come out of his mouth, but it's like he always told his team. No risk, no reward. And if he couldn't say it now, when could he?

THAT FEELS BOMB WENT OFF RIGHT IN MY HEART

Rafael inhales, and then holds that breath in his lungs for one solitary moment. He's smiling without meaning to.

"I love you, too," he says plainly. He's surprised by how easy it is. Writing it had been harder, and the hardest part by far had been when he'd first allowed himself to think it. But both of those times he'd been alone. When he's actually faced with Leo, it's different. Somewhere along the line he stopped putting his guard up around him.

The words are so clear that Leo has no choice but to believe them immediately. Or maybe that's just another effect Rafael has. Leo can't help but trust him right away. He can't help the way his face lights up, either. Somehow, it's not even embarrassing. He doesn't pull Rafael in for another kiss, like he wants. That'll still be more pleasant after a shower. Leo's hand has drifted down Rafael's arm, to his wrist. He presses that lightly, instead.

"Four minutes, thirty two seconds." He promises instead, voice warm, before tearing his fingers reluctantly away so he can go wash off the last three hours.
