QUIDDITCH: February 19, Match #6

RIBBONFIN

EBONHIDE

The forest is hit with morning showers which dry out by noon, although the sky remains gray and overcast when Black Bear and Rainbow Trout fans fill the stands. Despite having already demonstrating during tryouts exactly why they were chosen to lead, Captains Powers and Ogletree have both stepped it up with ambitious new routines, and the crowd’s in high spirits when the match begins.

Coach Thorn throws the Quaffle into the air, to be caught by Chaser Valentine. Opposing Chaser Decourt speeds ahead, swinging into Valentine’s blind side to intercept, but Valentine swiftly tosses the ball to her teammate, and Fairchild scores the first goal of the game. Spurred on by early success, the ladies of Ribbonfin fly circles around Keeper Raza, landing two more goals in the first 14 minutes, while on the Ribbonfin end of the field, Keeper Davenport’s riding high, and blocks two shots from Chaser Webb and one each from Quayle and Decourt.

It takes an entire 20 minutes before Ebonhide manages to break Davenport’s defenses, with Decourt passing to Quayle and Quayle aiming a long shot through the leftmost Ribbonfin hoop—but the other team takes the Quaffle next, and Chaser Alapai bumps the score to 40–10 less than five minutes later. Ribbonfin’s sophomore Beaters are having a strong start too, managing to repeatedly get in the way of Beaters Fiori and Kim, and redirect the Bludgers back at Ebonhide. It’s Fiori who finally slows Ribbonfin’s progress by pushing past a dogged Beater Delgado to slam a Bludger into the middle of Ribbonfin’s tight formation, hitting Alapai in the shoulder. Although Alapai manages to stay on her broom, she taps out to get her arm checked, and Reserve Lewis fills her spot.

While Ebonhide works to catch up, Seeker Hale has her work cut out for her in keeping her opponent away from the Golden Snitch. Bright isn’t looking to end the game early either, but he’s making it his goal to follow the Snitch as closely as possible, waiting for the opportune moment. Hale has to cut off Bright twice, once by the Ribbonfin goal posts and another time above the stands, as the Snitch flits around the field, taunting the Seekers. Around the first hour mark, Webb gets the Quaffle past Davenport, taking the score to 60–40 for Ribbonfin, and a third midair Seeker scuffle has both Hale and Bright losing the Snitch’s location completely.

Five minutes after the hour, Fiori and Kim have wrested control of the Bludgers from Ribbonfin, and their team’s Chasers start coming together. With both Bludgers repeatedly scattering the opposition, Decourt, Quayle and Webb spend the next half-hour stealing, passing and shooting in concert, and Ebonhide ties the game 80–80. Just as they’re about to pull ahead, Chaser Lewis flies right into Quayle’s path. Both try to swerve but too late, and the collision nearly knocks Quayle from his broom and definitely allows Fairchild to fly in and take the Quaffle. Thorn blows his whistle, but not before Fairchild makes a lightning-fast pass to Valentine, who scores. There’s a brief argument on the ground about whether the collision was intentional or an accident, but Thorn rules that Lewis has to sit out, and Alapai rejoins the game.

The dream team’s back together, but Ribbonfin appears to have slowed down, as both teams keep scoring goals, never straying more than 30 points away each other. The match stretches to two hours, and it becomes obvious that it’ll come down to the Snitch. High up, Bright and Hale are still circling the pitch, neither one able to find a sparkle of gold and silver. At exactly 2 hours and 30 minutes, with the score sitting at 150–130 for Ebonhide, Coach Thorn blows the whistle and calls everyone down for a break. While players refresh themselves and cast comfort charms after sitting too long on a broom, Thorn tells Captains Davenport and Fiori that he’s giving this match another half-hour and he’s calling an end, even if no one catches the Snitch.

Seekers Hale and Bright look frustrated, and there’s murmurs in the crowd as everyone wonders where the Golden Snitch could be hiding. The match resumes, everyone doing their best to stay focused, but it’s no surprise that as the minutes tick by, the players are becoming more and more exhausted. Decourt scores two goals past a tired Keeper Davenport. Fairchild is nearly winged in the elbow by Kim, and at one point, Fanning easily distracts Fiori from taking his taking his attention off the Bludger. The audience settles to half-hearted cheers with every new goal, impatient for the Snitch to appear… but it never does. Finally, after three long hours and an anticlimactic finish, Thorn calls the game.

EBONHIDE WINS
180–150
Whether you’re a player, cheerleader or spectator, post below with your character’s reactions! If you wish to post separately about the game, please use lj-cuts and mark for spoilers for the first 24 hours, so no one sees the result before reading the official match description. And the plot thickens...! Once again, thank you everyone for your patience. ♥

It's her fault, and she knows it. Avery, despite her and her team's stellar start, was just tired. Three hours in, with the cold and the everything else, and she's having a much harder time blocking the quaffle than she did at the beginning.

Avery is furious that the game is called, despite her obvious exhaustion. She knows her team could have won that, and being cut short and losing by thirty stupid points has the usually calm team captain up in arms. When she flies back down she does her best not to show it, congratulating Ebonhide and shaking Fiori's hand before complimenting her own team on their amazing plays and stamina. She makes sure to pull Bright aside and give him a pep talk.

Once carefully away from the rest of them, though, she mutters a few choice swear words, frustrated and embarrassed that she gave up their lead.

Zav, you monster. Didn't know you were such a SABOTEUR. But Ebonhide wins, so whatever, man, Ulysses doesn't care at all. And thank god, because if they had lost, Ulysses would've had to go die in the woods for real this time. Instead, he's exhausted but elated. Good job, team.

Also: "Score as often as possible," he says. "Win by quaffle points and not the snitch," he says. Well, Leo, did they do ya proud?

Also also, MODS, quick q: Obviously, Clem and Ulysses were being little monsters about the match, as per fucking usual. Any thoughts on who owes whom money?

LOL WELL THEN!
When Leo told his chasers that he wanted to see them win a game proving chaser superiority, without the Snitch, he didn't mean it quite this literally. The first thing he does on the ground is look from Chaser to Chaser, then to the sky, and questions who took the Snitch without anyone seeing to prove the bet...it's not funny, cough it up. But ultimately, he's very proud of all of them for not giving even one inch through an exhausting game. He tells each of his team members that he's proud of them, and he doesn't have the energy to make it look anything less than embarrassingly sincere.

(Don't get him wrong, though, Coppertale's still in 2 weeks, and they still have to review notes the next day. Just like, after dinner, instead of seven in the morning.)

He also is sure to tell Ribbonfin what a good game it was, and that he's sorry it took so long.

Leo himself did not stop fighting even for one second during the entirety of that three hours and probably has numb arms and looks like he is about ready to fall over and die, but he's very happy.

Rafael spent the last chunk of the match deeply concerned about the length and how his friends on both teams are faring. However, he's deeply impressed by how all of them keep soldiering on. Rafael sees the willingness to push yourself past your limitations to a possibly unhealthy degree as VERY ADMIRABLE.

Once it's over, though, he's dashing down to the pitch to congratulate Leo, and combination fuss/encourage after that agonizingly long match.

But Rafael knows how these things go, and hangs back as Leo is embraced by his very tired team. He won't sweep in and steal his attention until that important ritual is finished. When Leo turns around he might see Rafael watching him at the edge of the pitch.

Solomon, who is usually a bottomless pit of energy, even following quidditch matches, looks exhausted. But he still gives every team mate a very sincere hug (which probably isn't awesome because everybody's all sweaty but he's got a lot of love to share) because none of them fell off their brooms and isn't that great? Uly almost fell that one time but he didn't - good job Ulysses.

Then he goes over and gives every member of the ribbonfin team a hug because they played so good and he's really bummed they didn't get to win (he doesn't quite understand how rivalries work.) He genuinely tells Avery that she was so good. Before he goes on to hug Thorn and tell thorn that he did such a good job refereeing this match and that he appreciates him. Somebody should just put Solomon to bed.

2017-02-20 12:11 am UTC (link)
Three hours is a long time to play Quidditch and, by the time the game is over, Casper is exhausted. But exhausted in a good way, mostly, because he'd put everything he had into the match and there's a sort of catharsis in that. Plus, Ebonhide had won, playing just like Leo had instructed and succeeding just like Leo had predicted; it would make the others happy and that...isn't the worst thing. Once he's back on the ground, he pushes back his sweat-damp hair (it's perfect even after all that -- how is this possible?) and will linger for a few minutes to exchange congratulations nonchalantly with his teammates before he's off to hit the showers.

Reid tilts his head quizzically when, from his position in the stands, he stops seeing the Snitch. Like, entirely. As in it's gone. "What the fuck," he says to whoever is sitting with him. He's kind of annoyed by its disappearance, and seems more concerned about this than the actual game.

Unlike Azurcrest or Coppertale matches, Quinn's throat isn't raw at the end... though that may be more because she had time to recuperate during the longest match ever, and less because she was screaming any less than normal. For the record, she's totally there to cheer on Ebonhide.

She probably tried to sit with Rafael, convinced that his obvious favouritism for the bears should be expressed VOCALLY and WITH MUCH ENTHUSIASM. If he lets her hang out she'll be like his seeing-eye dog/roaring-cheers jay—a shouter by proxy, a voice for those too composed to holler what their heart really feels. (Which is mostly obscenities, apparently.)

You know what? Even if she lost her bet with Ulysses and that game took A YEAR AND A HALF to conclude, Clementine's having a pretty good day. They won the game and they're in the lead even if it's only by ten points! Go Ebonhide! She gives Dahlia shit for not catching the snitch and informs Ulysses that he only won the bet because she passed him the quaffle so much. You're welcome, Ulysses.

After she gets showered and changed she tracks down Vee and suggests they have a Celebratory Ebonhide Campfire. She figures she and Vee are the only people left with any extra energy to expend.

Usually when Coppertale's not playing and Ribbonfin is, Sy will root for Rosy's house, and even sit among the Ribbonfins despite, like, having spent the last couple of years picking on half of them. But not today, because today Sy looks like an obnoxious asshole wearing Clem's scarf. He'll stick with the Coppertales in the crowd as he cheers for Ebonhide.

And thank fuckin' Christ that Ebonhide won and Sy didn't cheer for the loser the entire time. It made sitting around for three hours worth it. He's going to give Clem shit later for only scoring four goals, but compliment her on her passing.

He couldn't decide who to cheer for because both of his school team Chaser counterparts are up there and they're both DOING SO GOOD okay Clem's not doing as well as Ulysses or Solomon but she's still trying really hard, HE'S SO PROUD HE KNOWS YOU GUYS.

He stayed more focused and enthusiastic throughout most of the game than the majority of the crowd, but at the end he was honestly mostly curious about what happened to the snitch. Does that mean it's just going to be floating around forever? Will it eventually just limp itself into Thorn's office and he'll scoop it up and put it away??? WHAT HAPPENS TO UNCAUGHT SNITCHES, IT'S A VERY IMPORTANT QUESTION AND JEFFY IS WORRIED.

Also good job everyone you all worked so hard, thumbs up!!!

While Ivy is the least athletically-inclined of her roommates, she always makes up for the fact with PEP AND SUPPORT! She's here to cheer on her girls, with her usual variety of embarrassing signage. GO TABS. GO SUN-MI. GO ZOEY. GO ANUHEA.

When Z touches down at the end of the game, she lies down on the pitch for a moment and just stares at the sky. So tired.

She hauls herself up after a moment, though, and heads over to congratulate Ebonhide and give her Ribbonfin comrades some well-deserved hugs.

Reid's kind of put out about losing the Snitch by way of being a secondhand observer. Usually it's easy to track when you're in the stands. Easier than tracking it when you're in the air, at least.

After the game, he disappears, which isn't unusual for Reid.

Elsewhere a large, white bird comes in for a precarious landing on the sluggish surface of Rainbow River. Flying like this is new. And so is being inconvenienced by small pieces of garbage. Reid feels something tangling his feet as he extracts himself from the water. String or something? Reid snaps at it with his beak and shakes the tangled leg, which has a fishing line leading from his webbed foot back into the cold river.

He's about to give up and turn back into a normal, slightly muddy boy when he hears footsteps on the bridge above him.

Jesse spends the first two hours of the game in his cabin, working out a few last minute kinks in the Cunningplan while all of his roommates are busy. He's surprised to find the game is still underway when he does finally show. But, the people sitting around him probably wish he had just skipped the match all together, because he's brought along with him a new toy.

In an attempt to cheer him up after Wes' sudden departure, his sisters pitched in for a sound-effect keyboard and had it priority owled. Jesse is really going all in and hasn't been seen without his new keyboard all weekend. Every time someone scores, regardless of the team, he plays an obnoxious 'WAAAHH WAAAHHH' sound effect for far, far, far too long.
