SENIOR MONTHLY BONDING: January

SENIOR BONDING

January’s senior monthly bonding is being hosted by a very (very, very) reluctant Mr. Chettri. He’s smiling, but there’s something behind his eyes that suggests that this is his nightmare.

He’s reserved the atrium, which has been filled with small tables and chairs. Students are assigned a partner, and are asked to sit at a table together. There are pastries, coffee and tea available if you want them. (Vegan options are offered.) You’re also provided with a piece of paper. The goal of the game is to sit and talk quietly ~~so he doesn’t have to~~, and try to find as many things as possible that you and the other person have in common.

THE RULES

Your characters have an hour and a half.
They must write down every item that the two of them have in common.
These things must be discovered by playing out the scene to qualify for a win.
- Clarification: This means that you must roleplay the discussion and discovery of items in order to have them be counted. Simply listing them without your characters talking out their similarities will not count. This event is meant to reward a pair who plays out a scene with a lot of dialogue.
If you come up with something that breaks the game, Mr. Chettri will be amused but he’ll discount your inflated numbers. (For instance, saying you have 206 bones in common.) This is about getting to know one another, not trying to outsmart your teacher.
- Clarification: Any time a category of very similar things (friends in common, classes in common, hookups in common) exceeds 4, Chettri is going to count them as one single item when we calculate the winners.
You have until 11:59 PM, Sunday Jan 8, after which we’ll count up how many things each pair came up with.
The winners will receive a pair of old little drawstring pouches, which are revealed to be bottomless. They can fit any number of (nonliving) items inside of them, assuming what you put inside can fit through the 5” opening.
Edit: There will be a hidden RNG element during final selection.

* As the assignments are handed out, Mr. Chettri realizes the numbers have come up odd. Someone must be out sick. This doesn’t immediately worry him, as he figures he can sit with the spare student and do the activity with them. Mr. Chettri is imagining one of the shy, introverted students, or perhaps one of his Divination prodigies. That would be nice. But when he looks up from his papers to see who’s standing alone, he immediately recognizes Cecil’s extremely chatty best friend with the glasses, Diego Morales. Oh no. This is not happening. In desperation, Mr. Chettri grabs Marilyn, and before they know it they’ve joined Senior Bonding!

I hope you’re ready for this.

Robin is going to start off this activity trying to list as many things as he can that literally no one else could relate to. It’s up to you to steer this conversation towards actual similarities if you want to win. But if not, you are also free to enjoy Robin’s batshit insanity.

Some things he “attempted” to bond with Asher over:

“I got three different doomsday bunkers back home, how many you got?”

“You been huntin’ right? Don’t gotta be midnight huntin’ with a pack of poodles or nothin’, but just regular ass hunting?”

“Got any badass scars? I’m gonna write down badass scars even if they suck.”

“Okay but aliens.”

He also usually lies about himself, but for the sake of this activity, everything he says is the truth. Or close enough to the truth.

It's a good thing Asher isn't competitive because they are screwed, but at least the Ribbonfin finds this pretty hilarious. He nearly asks if he and Robin can instead do all the things that are polar opposites between them because that's like, pretty much everything.

BUT, he thinks that getting to know his classmates is good and especially wants to be nice to poor Mr. Chettri and at least give it a try. So. Sorry Robin, he's got zero doomsday bunkers :( and zero hunting experience (poodles or no - "...do you go hunting with a pack of poodles? Is that a thing?"), and... well, his scars are not badass, but he does have some? Also aliens are not a thing to have in common. Probably.

"Ok!" Asher starts out after trying to not laugh at all of the things that somehow Robin thought they might have in common. "I'll try to think of a few things? Um. We can do some of the easy things, like you have a younger brother at Gooseberry and so do I. Both our brothers are in Coppertale. We have parents that made their money with their own businesses. Uh. You like no-maj things, right? TV, movies, music? Maybe we like some of the same things?" Probably not. He writes things down as he says them.

Initially, this bonding activity sounds boring to Ty, but once he realizes he's paired with Rafael's boyfriend, he perks right up! He's been meaning to spend more time with Leo! He drops down beside the other boy at the table, grins, grabs a scone, and dives right in with s bright tone. "All right! Easy, right, Leo? We're both close to Raf, we're both learning to swing dance (and we're both killing it!), we're both awesome Animagi, and we're both natural brunettes?" He punctuates this with a flip of his bleached hair and a laugh, "Not a bad start?"

	Ty's obvious enthusiasm makes it difficult for Leo to smartass his way through this one, as he'd planned. It also helps that he's paired with someone he's thought he should legitimately try to get to know anyway. "We're also captains of our teams." He points out, helpfully. "And seniors." There's a conversation to be had there, but Mina keeps her focus. "We're perfectionists. We don't like to be told no. We like to come out on top. We have a brother who is the most annoying human being we've ever met."

Normally, Jesse puts zero effort into bonding activities and maybe two out of his two-hundred-and-six bones are competitive, but he takes one look at the prize and thinks, 'That's a contrabag.' Penny, if you wanted to win the bag... I'm sorry.

Quinn is unhappy about this bonding activity. As least last month she was able to sabotage other groups' efforts. She's grumpy about having to waste her time talking to someone she's already known for three and a half years, and she isn't afraid to show it.

Her dedication will be minimal at best.

Does Chettri even know how much work they all have to get through? It's like the professors don't even care! "I think we're the only two Quidditch players to get knocked down to reserve." Quinn sighs and slumps back in her chair, waving a hand dismissively at the paper. "There."

Penelope wanted to win everything she did, but sharing information about herself was not even remotely something she wanted to do. The bonding activity always sucked, and now she wasn't all stressed out about her parents coming to visit. Penny sat with her arms folded over her chest, frown permastuck on her face.

"Not the only two but yeah, we both have." She knew another student or two who had as well.

Was it her turn? Penny didn't know Quinn. Not past superficial shit. She stared at the girl for a few minutes. "We both like sports in general."

Diego is one of those rare birds who doesn't hate bonding! I mean, aside from the constant low level fear that he's going to end up annoying someone, but usually he can deal with that because bonding usually doesn't require him to talk about himself in detail! Long story short, Diego kind of hates bonding today. He considers the alternate title of this game to be Countdown Until Marilyn Realizes I'm Shallow.

"We both like animals." Oh god, this is hard. This shouldn't be hard. Stop making it hard, Diego. Despite internally freaking out, Diego remains smiling brightly. "Do you speak any other languages?"

Marilyn is too oblivious most of the time to consider anyone shallow, and she is only too happy to sit with Diego when Mr. Chettri asks. After all, she gets to talk to someone fun and participate in a senior activity. It's like she's won some kind of lottery!

"Yes! Although I might say love." Smiling, and not aware of Diego's inner turmoil, she considers. "I do. Swedish and a little bit of Afrikaans." Perks of growing up in a few places, right?

"I know you like music, which I do too," she adds, though frowns a little. "I don't play any instruments, though. Is music in general too vague?"

Ravi immediately takes charge of writing things down. It seems like a bit of a cheat to put them together, given all their similarities and how unnecessary it is to "bond" with someone who's been your good friend for years, but Ravi is always happy to spend time with Cecil.

"One, we're both prefects. Or we were both prefects, Monsieur le Head Boy." He grins, and tries to think of other obvious things. "Two, we enjoy studying far more than our peers think is healthy. Three, we enjoy reading far more than our peers think is healthy. Or maybe that's too easy? Hmm." Ravi taps his quill against the page. "No, no, this is a competition, after all, and we should get into the spirit. Number four, lack of competitive spirit. However, numbers five and six: appreciation for poetry and ancient mythology."

While Cecil spends the very beginning of the bonding activity feeling bad for poor shy Mr. Chettri and giving the teacher reassuring smiles whenever he glances his way, he's actually happy about the exercise. It seems like a good opportunity for everyone...even if he and Ravi have known each other and been close for a long time. While Ravi begins listing and the writing, he prepares tea for both of them and playfully suggests, "We prefer black tea to coffee?" Though Ravi takes his with milk and sugar while Cecil takes his with honey, so maybe that doesn't count? He smiles sheepishly at the Head Boy comment, then shakes his head and attempts to contribute, "Are. The Head Boy is still a prefect. But...we're both good students and we've both taken nine classes every year for the last four years, several which overlap. Charms, Herbology, Potions, Wizard Literature. We've both got good penmenship, though yours is better than mine." Stopping to offer Ravi his tea, he laughs a little, "This should be harder, shouldn't it?"

Nate isn't against this bonding activity, he just doesn't really want to spend 90 minutes talking about himself. Especially when he could be in the library. Studying. He shoots Quinn a look that says basically exactly that, but sits down and does his best not to show how much he would rather be somewhere else.

"Okay, well, the obvious ones are the classes we have together," he says, already working on writing them down. "I dunno, we're both 17?" This seems like enough stuff, can they go back to the library?

Levi and Trixie have an unfair advantage because they've known each other through their Magizoologist moms since they were kids.

Levi grabs a baby and immediately starts writing out the easiest yet detailed shared facts about them:

Our moms are both Magizoologists
Our dads live in California.
We have at least one sibling that also attended Gooseberry.
We like explosions.

Yeah, Trixie just gives a little cheer when she finds out who her partner is. Levi and Trixie had been friends for ages and more than likely have more things in common than they really should. Grabbing the list from Levi, Trixie scrawls out a bunch more things in common.

-Stole bikes (with streamers attached) to ride around in Salmon-Huckleberry Wilderness in Oregon
-Got matching tie-dye t-shirts stating ‘I made friends with Bigfoot’
-Suffered through multiple readings of horrible fiction written by Brendon Armstrong when younger
-Proceeded to make fun of the stories during slumber parties when they got tired of Ouiji boarding for dead people
-Travel in the same party across Generic Fantasyland
-Totally defeated that bear at least once together
-Best friends with King Elmasry at least in their minds
-Got matching lightning bolt sharpie tattoos on our foreheads when we were nine
-Have healthy regular bowel movements due to our diets
-Milk makes us poop really bad though
-Have both gotten gifts from Christopher Park
-Have had impure thoughts about Christopher Park (ex. unpaid labor, fighting pit fantasies, throwing him in mud, etc.)
-Cheated more than once at chess because they forgot what each piece did
-Cheated at checkers just because they could
-Got caught cheating at checkers

She then handed the page back to Levi. "We got this. Really no one can beat how similar we are. I wonder just how many we can actually come up with. Should we include our one slightly smaller toe nails from that time in Northern California when we decided that drift wood would make great shoes?"
