MISTLETOE: DAY 1

It's chaos at Gooseberry Alternative High School. Again.

Marilyn Fairchild and Penelope Vargas are collaborating on making a cheeky magically altered version of mistletoe, which is in the Charms classroom for safe keeping. The intent is for use in party games, but the current version is way too enthusiastic. All’s going well until a white crow flies in through an open window. Before Marilyn or Penelope can do anything about it, the beautiful bird has snatched their specimen in its beak and is flying back out the window. That’s weeks of work!!!

By the end of the day, mistletoe has sprouted all over the Lodge. Anyone who is unlucky enough to walk underneath a sprig of it is trapped in place with their feet rooted to the ground. This is inconvenient enough, but the only way to free a trapped student is with a kiss.

HOW THIS WORKS

Mistletoe is growing like vines throughout the lodge, hanging from the ceiling, apparently attempting to position itself to "trap" students.

By noon, it's widespread enough that it's become a serious inconvenience. Classes are not cancelled, but under the circumstances, students are forgiven for tardiness.

If your character walks under a sprig of mistletoe, their feet are rooted to the spot.

The only thing that will free them is a kiss. Cheek kisses or a kiss to the back of the hand are sufficient. So is a kiss on the lips, but chances are, most people will opt for something more chaste.

Mr. Hightower is busy all day, and cancels Herbology until he can get a handle on this. The mistletoe is proving to be highly resistant to being cut, hexed, set on fire, or exposed to magical weed killer. (Also, please don't set things on fire in the lodge???)

The lodge is not as large as Hogwarts castle, but it's still spacious with plenty of corridors to get lost in if you want to get your character stranded.

Post your character to a location below if they got stuck. If you're waiting for someone in particular, indicate who's going to free your character in the subject line. Otherwise, comments are considered open for a random rescuer.

» Atrium: The busy sitting area of the Lodge. There's lots of mistletoe, but just as many people to save you.

» Cafeteria: Bustling at mealtimes, quiet for the rest of the day.

» First Floor Halls & Balconies: Winding corridors with windows that look out into the woods.

» Second Floor Halls & Balconies: Long hallways, some of which overlook the atrium and the students below.

» Third Floor Halls & Balconies: These balconies have a stunning view of the lake and surrounding forests. They are also the least populated.

» Classrooms: Some are in use, some are empty.

» Library: Is nowhere sacred?! Ms. Petrichor is incensed at the mistletoe in her library. Every time she finds a new sprig, she marks the floor with an angry X.

If it weren't for the recent Amortentia debacle, Casper would've found Rafael's current predicament and vexed expression considerably more amusing. As it is, though, he feigns exasperation to hide his mild discomfort and crosses the empty hall to face the other boy with a tight smirk. "This has got to be...what? The second or third time? You need to be more careful, Ramirez." He crosses his arms and looks at him with upraised eyebrows. "...So. Hand, cheek, or should am I supposed to go find your Prince Charming for you?"

Rafael sighs, but Casper is not... the worst person that could possibly come to his aid. "Ah, finally I will get that kiss from you that I have always wanted... since last month, for about twelve hours." He thinks Casper has the right idea; dry jokes are definitely the best way to handle this.

"Don't bother Leo," Rafael adds, "I am sure you don't want to be the errand boy sent to tell your captain I need him. Just take the hand." Accordingly, he holds out his hand to get this over with.

Casper snorts at this quip, but...actually seems to relax a little. If Rafael can make jokes about that, then neither of them are as fucked up about the experience as they could be. And that's a good thing. He still can't look at the other boy in quite the same way, though. Can't see the strict and sometimes infuriating prefect without also seeing the intense but oddly charismatic guy he'd been when he was forced to wear his very confused heart on his sleeve. These pieces of Rafael still don't fit together in his mind as one person, but he's working on that, and he finds that he can't simply hate the guy like he used to. For better or worse.

The errand boy comment, though, earns a much sharper glare and he snatches Rafael's hand more roughly than is actually necessary. "Fuck that. Forget I asked." He then kisses the Coppertale's hand awkwardly, drops it, and steps back, waiting. That should've done the trick. "...You good?"

Rafael takes a step - to the side, away from both Casper and the mistletoe - and gives Casper a quick smile. "Good."

Rafael straightens himself out (there's no need; his uniform is immaculate, even though he can't stand it) as he faces Casper. Their relationship has never been warm, but it had thawed somewhat since he drank the Amortentia. Rafael sometimes wondered if it was pity that made Casper soften, but after some consideration, Rafael had decided that seemed unlikely coming from Casper. "Thank you."

Casper doesn't smile back, but his expression seems considerably less sharp than it had before and he nods. Then he moves to shove his hands into the pockets of his slacks. He's never liked the uniform either and his cravat is entirely absent this afternoon; he can't always get away with that, but the dress code has been low on most priority lists today and he doubts that even Ramirez will call him on it. "Just doing my job, right?" he answers with a mild shrug and a small huff, "My fucking ridiculous job."

He pauses, glancing up the corridor where he can see at least three more sprigs of mistletoe, including one that he's almost positive wasn't there just a few hours ago. He scowls at it, then says, "We should go back together. Hightower's not doing as good a job as he thinks." This doesn't sound like a request, but when he looks back at Rafael with slightly uplifted eyebrows, it's clear that it is. He doesn't want to get stuck either.
