MISTLETOE: DAY 1

It's chaos at Gooseberry Alternative High School. Again.

Marilyn Fairchild and Penelope Vargas are collaborating on making a cheeky magically altered version of mistletoe, which is in the Charms classroom for safe keeping. The intent is for use in party games, but the current version is way too enthusiastic. All’s going well until a white crow flies in through an open window. Before Marilyn or Penelope can do anything about it, the beautiful bird has snatched their specimen in its beak and is flying back out the window. That’s weeks of work!!!

By the end of the day, mistletoe has sprouted all over the Lodge. Anyone who is unlucky enough to walk underneath a sprig of it is trapped in place with their feet rooted to the ground. This is inconvenient enough, but the only way to free a trapped student is with a kiss.

HOW THIS WORKS

Mistletoe is growing like vines throughout the lodge, hanging from the ceiling, apparently attempting to position itself to "trap" students.

By noon, it's widespread enough that it's become a serious inconvenience. Classes are not cancelled, but under the circumstances, students are forgiven for tardiness.

If your character walks under a sprig of mistletoe, their feet are rooted to the spot.

The only thing that will free them is a kiss. Cheek kisses or a kiss to the back of the hand are sufficient. So is a kiss on the lips, but chances are, most people will opt for something more chaste.

Mr. Hightower is busy all day, and cancels Herbology until he can get a handle on this. The mistletoe is proving to be highly resistant to being cut, hexed, set on fire, or exposed to magical weed killer. (Also, please don't set things on fire in the lodge???)

The lodge is not as large as Hogwarts castle, but it's still spacious with plenty of corridors to get lost in if you want to get your character stranded.

Post your character to a location below if they got stuck. If you're waiting for someone in particular, indicate who's going to free your character in the subject line. Otherwise, comments are considered open for a random rescuer.

» Atrium: The busy sitting area of the Lodge. There's lots of mistletoe, but just as many people to save you.

» Cafeteria: Bustling at mealtimes, quiet for the rest of the day.

» First Floor Halls & Balconies: Winding corridors with windows that look out into the woods.

» Second Floor Halls & Balconies: Long hallways, some of which overlook the atrium and the students below.

» Third Floor Halls & Balconies: These balconies have a stunning view of the lake and surrounding forests. They are also the least populated.

» Classrooms: Some are in use, some are empty.

» Library: Is nowhere sacred?! Ms. Petrichor is incensed at the mistletoe in her library. Every time she finds a new sprig, she marks the floor with an angry X.

Cecil doesn't actually need to turn and look to know that Riley's the one coming his way. Not when he knows her bright voice and that nickname that only she has ever used. But he does and, when he sees her, he offers her a smile that's equal parts gratitude, relief, and embarrassment. "Riley! Yeah, I do and I am." Unnecessarily, he gestures to the plant dangling overhead, then asks, "Do you mind?"

Riley is BEAMING when she gets to Cecil, because Riley has literally never minded anything less. "Oh my god, anything for you, Papa Bird," she chirps.

Instead of being polite and grabbing his hand to kiss, or asking him where he wanted her to plant her Freedom Smooch, Riley hops up to try and plant a red-rimmed lip print on Cecil's cheek. She doesn't quite make it, and instead ends up leaving a small smear of lipstick along his lower jaw. Whoops. Did it still work?

Cecil's smile broadens and he's about to thank Riley again when she suddenly goes for his cheek...and falls quite a bit short. Startled, he automatically moves to steady Riley (which he does) and to take an unconscious step back to steady himself (which he can't). His feet are still stuck firmly in place. Apparently, his jaw wasn't an acceptable place or the faltering gesture wasn't an acceptable kiss. Either way. He touches the red mark on his jaw and smiles apologetically at Riley. "I. Think we have to try that one more time," he says, indicating his unmovable legs and then leaning forward a little so that his actual cheek is more accessible. The difference in their heights really is considerable. A staggering seventeen inches. So...he can't really blame her for failing to make it.

	Riley gives a little pout over her kiss not taking. Ugh, usually people threw her. "Okay, take two, Cecilbee!" she announces and stood on her tiptoes to plant a firm, actual kiss right on Cecil's cheek. When she pulled away, a perfect way too bright red lipstick mark remained, like a damn signature. (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

Seeing the pout, Cecil smiles and apologizes playfully, hoping to lighten the girl's mood again, "I know. If I weren't a giant, that would've been spot on. Sorry about that." As it turns out, Take Two is far more successful and he immediately steps out from under the mistletoe with a sigh of relief; then he looks at his savior again, adding, "Thanks, Riley. I owe you one." And, yes, he is aware of the big red mark on his cheek and the big red smear on his jaw...but he figures he can deal with that once he's parted ways with his friend.
