MISTLETOE: DAY 1

It's chaos at Gooseberry Alternative High School. Again.

Marilyn Fairchild and Penelope Vargas are collaborating on making a cheeky magically altered version of mistletoe, which is in the Charms classroom for safe keeping. The intent is for use in party games, but the current version is way too enthusiastic. All’s going well until a white crow flies in through an open window. Before Marilyn or Penelope can do anything about it, the beautiful bird has snatched their specimen in its beak and is flying back out the window. That’s weeks of work!!!

By the end of the day, mistletoe has sprouted all over the Lodge. Anyone who is unlucky enough to walk underneath a sprig of it is trapped in place with their feet rooted to the ground. This is inconvenient enough, but the only way to free a trapped student is with a kiss.

HOW THIS WORKS

Mistletoe is growing like vines throughout the lodge, hanging from the ceiling, apparently attempting to position itself to "trap" students.

By noon, it's widespread enough that it's become a serious inconvenience. Classes are not cancelled, but under the circumstances, students are forgiven for tardiness.

If your character walks under a sprig of mistletoe, their feet are rooted to the spot.

The only thing that will free them is a kiss. Cheek kisses or a kiss to the back of the hand are sufficient. So is a kiss on the lips, but chances are, most people will opt for something more chaste.

Mr. Hightower is busy all day, and cancels Herbology until he can get a handle on this. The mistletoe is proving to be highly resistant to being cut, hexed, set on fire, or exposed to magical weed killer. (Also, please don't set things on fire in the lodge???)

The lodge is not as large as Hogwarts castle, but it's still spacious with plenty of corridors to get lost in if you want to get your character stranded.

Post your character to a location below if they got stuck. If you're waiting for someone in particular, indicate who's going to free your character in the subject line. Otherwise, comments are considered open for a random rescuer.

» Atrium: The busy sitting area of the Lodge. There's lots of mistletoe, but just as many people to save you.

» Cafeteria: Bustling at mealtimes, quiet for the rest of the day.

» First Floor Halls & Balconies: Winding corridors with windows that look out into the woods.

» Second Floor Halls & Balconies: Long hallways, some of which overlook the atrium and the students below.

» Third Floor Halls & Balconies: These balconies have a stunning view of the lake and surrounding forests. They are also the least populated.

» Classrooms: Some are in use, some are empty.

» Library: Is nowhere sacred?! Ms. Petrichor is incensed at the mistletoe in her library. Every time she finds a new sprig, she marks the floor with an angry X.

Her reply is immediate - like she'd had a significant amount of time (and slices of yellow American cheese) to think of it: "Rationing."

Though, at the rate she's going, she'd definitely die in a shamefully short amount of time. But she figures that she'd be able to wheedle a Freshman into feeding her if needs must.

Her lips twitch upward at the corners, clearly amused. "You know I'd love to smack things at your head, but I'm feeling pretty attached to this spot."

His eyes follow the growth of mistletoe, trying to chart a safe path to the door. "Well, maybe not for DADA. Lilywhite would probably still kill you for not being on time." Exactly. Curse-breaking via stubbornness. Or by eventually luring some poor sucker in like a pitcher plant. Either way.

It's pretty much a minefield at this point, let's be real. Roxie wrinkles her nose at the general cafeteria layout as well before humming thoughtfully. "Well, she'd probably have to come down here to kill me. So you'd still get out of class. It'd be a bonus Christmas present. Just for you."

"And then I'd have to train a new Beater. Fuck no." This year's already been a goddamn nightmare without him having to figure out how to fit someone new into the team dynamic. Penny and Garrett are competent flyers, but Roxie has the edge in multiple categories. Sy hadn't hesitated to move her to first string.

He leans in, putting an arm around her shoulders, and plants a kiss on Roxie's cheek. "Don't let me fuckin' catch you around here again, Barringer. I mean, like, underneath one of these bullshit plants, not the cafeteria. Shit."

Penny would probably let Lilywhite kill her. And not just for her first string position. (Though that'd be a bonus feature.) But, y'know. No hard feelings on her part.

"Aw," she grins brightly, bussing him on the cheek quickly in return and dancing backward. "I love you too, schatz. I'll hit bludgers at you any time."

Hey, man. Mistletoe's still there. She's just being proactive.
