MISTLETOE: DAY 1

It's chaos at Gooseberry Alternative High School. Again.

Marilyn Fairchild and Penelope Vargas are collaborating on making a cheeky magically altered version of mistletoe, which is in the Charms classroom for safe keeping. The intent is for use in party games, but the current version is way too enthusiastic. All’s going well until a white crow flies in through an open window. Before Marilyn or Penelope can do anything about it, the beautiful bird has snatched their specimen in its beak and is flying back out the window. That’s weeks of work!!!

By the end of the day, mistletoe has sprouted all over the Lodge. Anyone who is unlucky enough to walk underneath a sprig of it is trapped in place with their feet rooted to the ground. This is inconvenient enough, but the only way to free a trapped student is with a kiss.

HOW THIS WORKS

Mistletoe is growing like vines throughout the lodge, hanging from the ceiling, apparently attempting to position itself to "trap" students.

By noon, it's widespread enough that it's become a serious inconvenience. Classes are not cancelled, but under the circumstances, students are forgiven for tardiness.

If your character walks under a sprig of mistletoe, their feet are rooted to the spot.

The only thing that will free them is a kiss. Cheek kisses or a kiss to the back of the hand are sufficient. So is a kiss on the lips, but chances are, most people will opt for something more chaste.

Mr. Hightower is busy all day, and cancels Herbology until he can get a handle on this. The mistletoe is proving to be highly resistant to being cut, hexed, set on fire, or exposed to magical weed killer. (Also, please don't set things on fire in the lodge???)

The lodge is not as large as Hogwarts castle, but it's still spacious with plenty of corridors to get lost in if you want to get your character stranded.

Post your character to a location below if they got stuck. If you're waiting for someone in particular, indicate who's going to free your character in the subject line. Otherwise, comments are considered open for a random rescuer.

» Atrium: The busy sitting area of the Lodge. There's lots of mistletoe, but just as many people to save you.

» Cafeteria: Bustling at mealtimes, quiet for the rest of the day.

» First Floor Halls & Balconies: Winding corridors with windows that look out into the woods.

» Second Floor Halls & Balconies: Long hallways, some of which overlook the atrium and the students below.

» Third Floor Halls & Balconies: These balconies have a stunning view of the lake and surrounding forests. They are also the least populated.

» Classrooms: Some are in use, some are empty.

» Library: Is nowhere sacred?! Ms. Petrichor is incensed at the mistletoe in her library. Every time she finds a new sprig, she marks the floor with an angry X.

Rosy & Casey. PSA: Casey is dancing ALL DAMN DAY.

Casey was sliiiiiiding out of a neighbouring (now empty) classroom where he'd been tasked with rescuing some poor, adorable freshman when he noticed Rosy.

He doesn't say anything at first. Instead, he treats Rosy to a little bit of a dance routine in the middle of the hallway and makes unyielding eye contact every time he's facing her. There isn't even a blink.

When he's done he slides up juuust to the edge of the mistletoe. "Oh, hey, Lady Stokes." Yes, he realizes she's stuck. He's been wearing a smug grin for most of the day and right now is no different. "Enjoying the music?" He starts dancing again, a hair more subtle than before, and contributes a half-shouted "RED NOSE!" to Merrill's singing from inside the classroom.

This might, like, actually be a nightmare. For a second, Rosy wonders if the mistletoe is stopping her from just laying down right there and dying, but then she realizes that that would take a really long time, and she would have to listen to Mr. Merrill’s Christmas caroling and watch Casey “It’s Cold Out, Put a Damn Coat On At Least” Patterson dance around her probably the entire time.

“This is the soundtrack to hell, Casey,” she grumbles, staring right at him and damaging her poor teeth more with that grinding. “Like, we might actually be dead and in hell.”

For the love of fuck, did he ever stop moving? Or spewing cheesy pickup lines? Or just generally being Casey fucking Patterson? Rosy rubs her eyes with the heels of her hand and sighs, trying, just, so hard to not snap and hurt someone right outside a classroom. Save that shit for outside, Rosemary. “Is there an end to any of this, or are you just here for the dance party?”

	Casey makes an "Ohhhhhhh!" as though he's only just realized why Rosy's been so okay with being the centre of his attention. "Is there something you'd like to ask me, Lady Stokes? For a second, Rosy gets a look in her eyes. A look that those who room with the Stokers might know as the Someone’s Gonna Die look. But with a deep breath and an incredibly fake smile, Rosy collects herself enough to make a quick list of pros & cons about asking Casey Patterson to kiss her.

PROS:

She already, unfortunately, knows he’s a good kisser and brushes his teeth, so it could be worse.

This Christmas music isn’t stopping.

Neither is this dancing, and at least she can get away from it if she was free.

She just wants to go get food. This will allow her to go get food. But at what cost?

CONS:

She would really rather hit him than let him kiss her.

This is what he wants, fuck him.

His face is only going to get smugger and then she'll just want to hit him some more.

“Dude,” she says with her fake smile that kind of looks…dangerous? Kind of still looks like that Someone’s Gonna Die look? “Either help me leave, or leave me alone.”

	Casey's perfectly familiar with the Someone's Gonna Die Look, but unfortunately three years of living with Sy has created the opposite reaction in him: it encourages him. Rosy blinks. Holy shit, is she really going to get expelled before Sy? The Christmas music was drilling into her skull, the halls were disturbingly void of life, she was ~~hungry~~ fucking hangry, and she was stuck to the ground and unable to follow through on her threats.

"Dude, just stop dancing and kiss me so I can get to lunch." She might regret the not specific nature of her request in a minute, but Casey's gonna regret it when Rosy puts a hit out on him, so it'll all kind of come out in the wash.

Casey's grin widens and he sliiiides right up into Rosy's personal space. "'K." He gives her a... quick and surprisingly chaste peck on the lips. As soon as he's done he turns away and half-dances, half-bounds up the hallway. Just before it forks into two directions he stops, strikes a pose, and winks at Rosy over his shoulder — and then he's away, to save another poor soul from the mistletoe.
