I'm not trying to question authority or anything, but I don't really understand what all the fuss is about the sledding. I mean, maybe I just don't understand something because I'm muggleborn, but quidditch seems just as dangerous? I mean, you're way up high on brooms jostling each other, and there are two iron balls enchanted to attack you and try to knock you off your broom. People get hurt plenty at that, right? And there were broken bones and concussions from hockey the other day, too.

And I get that there was underage drinking, and people were hurt and there was no healer on hand, but if people do this every year anyway, why don't they just turn it into a school sanctioned event? Staff being there would keep people from drinking, and Mufferaw could be there to fix any injuries.

Or is it just that we're only allowed to endanger ourselves for sports? You're allowed to get a concussion as long as it's something you can win at?

Magic can't fix everything. If you break your neck because of drunken unsupervised sledding, you're just regular old dead. If you fall off your broom, there are several seconds in which someone can stop you and slow you down. Sledding into the woods, not so much. And the school is tasked with keeping us safe and educating us. I'm sure the staff has actually considered making it a sanctioned event just so they could try and make it supervised, but there's not really any way to make sure no one is going to get seriously injured. They're answerable to our parents and guardians, they're legally responsible for us, and throwing people down a hill is not worth us not complaining about it.

As for the Grotto parties, I've never been a partygoer, but you know you're exaggerating for effect. And you should also know that there are a number of sober and responsible prefects who attend those parties just so that doesn't happen, and it's proven to be a hell of a lot easier to do than the sledding. Which you would know if you hadn't been so fucking taken care of your entire life worth that you just take it for granted that someone's got your back. 10 years of Grotto parties and no one's come back with a broken leg. What happened with one day of sledding? Is the casualties list out yet?

But if it was sober, supervised sledding, there'd be the same several seconds between you and a tree as between a broom and the ground.

And no, I'm not! I wandered off into the woods and no one noticed, no one cared, and no one checked on me. The one one who cared was a ghost or something and if I'd just sat down right there under the bush, no one would have known until morning.

But never mind because I guess I'm just a dumb muggle who thinks dumb to think sledding is normal and sky death ball flying sports and drunken woods parties aren't.

Not really? You might think a lot of seconds are going by as your life flashes before your eyes, but when you’re rocketing down the hill and your sled veers sideways and suddenly there’s a tree in your path, you need some lightening reflexes to save yourself. I know it’s counterintuitive, but when you’re several stories in the air you do actually have a lot of time to hope someone saves you.

Did you get stabbed by a mysterious guy who found our Unplottable school? Wander into the lake on the other side of the forest? Were you in the woods long enough to catch hypothermia? Or just long enough to feel sorry for yourself? Do you really think there’s been a single night at this school that I didn’t know where each of you girls were or said you’d be, especially if you weren’t in your cabin? No matter how much I might have had to drink that night, if you weren’t back at the cabin when I got there, I would have found you.

Just calling it sledding like it’s what kids do on bunny slopes is misleading. There was a fuss over sledding because sledding down that hill has proven to be dangerous for years. If there was a proper, safe sledding hill in this school, even the Azurcrests probably would have opted for that.

Fine. You're all right and everyone is dumb. You're right. We'll do everything exactly like you say. We'll make binders for it and color code everything on a scale from "acceptably dangerous" to "crazy dangerous" and [wet marks] after I do mine you can just redo it like my dad, because obviously it'll be all wrong and you know best.

If you're upset, I'd rather you talk to me like an adult instead of throwing your hands in the air and throwing ad hominem attacks around. I was answering your questions. I never once called you or anyone dumb. This is the fourth fucking time you've cried to me for Just stop being so fucking dramatic about everything Are you actually upset about the sledding getting busted up?

Why? You treat us and talk to us like children so why not just act like it?

I'm upset because I don't see the difference between any of these things except an arbitrary line that isn't even drawn the same by all the

No thanks, I'd rather not be told again how WRONG I am for thinking the wrong things

I'd rather not talk anymore.

No one was trying to upset you or make you feel inferior. You started a discussion. Sometimes the follow through is hard and sometimes you just want to hide because you don't realize what you've just done. I started a fight club, Chloe, I know about unintended consequences, but it's nothing to cry about not that big of a deal that like one person didn't coddle you it gets easier the more you face it.

You're welcome to not talk or talk and go where you want right now, but if you're not back to the cabin when curfew gets close, I'll find you, so don't worry. I'm not joking about needing to worrying knowing where you girls are. I take your safety very seriously.

I meant to start a discussion but apparently started a fight. I hate fighting. The fish said this was the house that hated fighting and I was like, "Sign me up!"

Yeah okay.

This is the house that solves things diplomatically, and diplomacy involves a lot of discussions. Discussions can get heated, but as long as we're aware of our words and work to keep emotions in check, they can stay civil and constructive. But we also have to keep in mind that we're a group of similarly-tempered individuals in a school of incredibly different people and temperaments. People who face problems differently, people who don't realize how we come across. We can't avoid being thrown into a fight now and again or maybe that's just me?, no matter how much we hate it.

And [...] I know I come across as someone who loves to pick a fight and punch a wall, but I hate fighting. It makes my head and stomach hurt and Uf you were talking about me, I wasn't trying to fight with you. I was honestly just trying to answer your questions, as was Rafael, as was Ravi. There was no malice. There's more than one way to pick a fight with someone, and one of those ways is biting the hand that's trying to help you.

I DIDN'T BITE I didn't start anything. Rafael wasn't trying to help or answer anything, he thinks he's a general and he gets mad when all the soldiers don't fall in line. And why do you have to side with everyone but me? Why do you just have to keep explaining and trying to make me feel dumb even if you say you're not? Why do you have to have the last word? For someone who hates fighting, you like winning an awful lot, even if the other person didn't even want to play.

Okay. I'll keep that in mind.

I'm just going to go be by myself for a while.

Too??

I met.. someone.

I mean, someone touched my back and talked to me, and when I turned around there was no one there and no footprints or anything anywhere, so they didn't just sneak off.

I thought it was some kind of, I don't know, prank or something, but after everything the anonymous writer said this last time, I don't think so anymore.

I don't think he's a ghost, because ghosts aren't corporeal. But there's a boy something, and he lives in the woods.

I'm glad he's friendly. And... you should be glad you didn't turn around and see him. He doesn't look very nice.

I didn't know he was corporeal, but I guess he'd have to be to write in the journals during the anonymous stuff.

Me too. I mean, Ilvermorny had ghosts but they were less... secretive? They just walked up and said hi.

OMGWhat does he look like??

Do you think that's really him, then?

It's exactly the same at Hogwarts!! Our House ghost in Hufflepuff was so friendly and funny, he was always making jokes and chatting to us about our day. I'm glad American ghosts are the same. I knew I was right about the boy not being a ghost!

Um Like he's been dead for a while.

The boy that supposedly drowned? I'm not sure! Anony said s/he tried to save him and got in trouble, right? So maybe s/he's someone else?

I mean, do ghosts have to haunt where they died? Maybe s/he's someone who tried to save the boy who died, but couldn't, and when they died, they came back to... protect the rest of us?

I mean, there were some grumpy ghosts at Ilvermorny, but they'd still talk to you. They weren't creepy once you got used to ghosts existing.

But what else could the... boy be? A poltergeist maybe? What else is kinda like a ghost but not?

Oh. Wow. What else?? Did he look... drowned? I don't know. Or wet? If he was a ghost, he'd look the same way he died, right?

Oh, right! How many mysterious entities are there in these woods???

I don't think so! Most of the Hogwarts ghosts didn't actually die there. The Anonymous Writer does sound friendly. It'd be nice if they were protecting us!

I don't think he's a poltergeist. They're rude and destructive and they like to pester people because they think it's funny. I thought maybe the boy I saw was an Inferius, but then Cricket someone reminded me Inferi can't just disappear into thin air, which is what the boy did.

His clothes looked dirty, like he'd been buried or sleeping in the forest. But when he tried to speak (I think he was trying to speak, anyway) he couldn't breathe, and it sounded horrible, like he was choking. So... I don't know. Maybe?

Good question!

I never asked at Ilvermorny, I thought it might be rude to ask how someone died.

It's all really weird! And it's weird that the staff have to know, right? But they say it's nothing.

Wow, that sounds terrifying!! No wonder you still wanted a buddy! I would have wanted to go home!! You're really brave, Pippa!

Oh, I never asked the ghosts directly! But their stories were in Hogwarts, A History.

They must know! They're teachers, they know practically everything. Which means they're keeping secrets for a reason. Maybe to protect us, or stop us from being scared of what's out there?

It was so scary. I did want to go home  I'm really sorry I didn't tell you about this before! I was scared no one would believe me, and I didn't know how to even begin to talk about it. Thank you for being my buddy!!

Oh. I don't know if Ivermorny has a book like that, but it sounds helpful!

Maybe it is to protect us! It said on the anonymous post that coming close to them made people sad, but I'm sure they don't mean for that to happen?

It's okay! I didn't tell anyone about the ghost hand either because I didn't think they'd believe me. And of course you're welcome! :)

It's so long, it took me a month to read the whole thing. But it was really interesting!

I don't think they mean to make us sad either! Not that I felt sad when I saw the boy by the lake, but maybe I was too scared shocked to feel anything else.

Well, I believe you!

Well, I guess Hogwarts IS older than Ilvermorny, so it would have a long history.

I was impressed they managed to fit it all in one book! But the writing was very small.

Well, I don't think he's happy. It seems to me like being dead? a ghost? alone would make anyone sad.
