Lake Gooseberry Shinny, Game 1

Despite the balmy weather that allowed for yesterday's Polar Bear Plunge, the lake just north of the docks has been deemed solid enough (or near enough to solid) for the first game of Lake Gooseberry Shinny, the student-run intramural hockey team. Players and spectators both make their way down to the designated 'rink' where Mr. Thorn has delimited the safest ice with neon yellow markers.

As they arrive, each player receives their team assignment, a pinny in the colour of their team (yellow for the Pennywise Pixies and black for the Goosey Griffins), and their Choose-Your-Bruise badge. Every badge is in the shape of a circle except for Sybilla Borgin, whose badge is shaped like a birthday cake, and Ty Hawkeswood, whose badge is shaped like a pansy.

TEAM 2
THE GOOSEY GRIFFINS

(Black pinnies)

A red rectangle is charmed into the ice to show the rink's boundaries, and the goals are each two piles of snow connected by a thick blue line in the ice.

Quinn Cunningham gathers both teams together to explain the rules:

RULES
  1. No wands on the ice
  2. Players must abide by the Personal Contact Policies
  3. Any player found to be ignoring the badge system will be banned from the next game. If the player's disregard for the rules continues, the player will be banned from the league.
  4. Players are not allowed to administer contact beyond their own level. (ex. Green badges cannot check Red badges and vice-versa.)
  5. There are no positions or goalies.
  6. As the teams are so large this year, the game duration has been extended to two hours to allow each player ample time on the ice. Each player will spend at least 10 minutes on the bench (with 7–8 benched at a time).
  7. Helmets and mouthguards are mandatory for all players, any other padding is left to the discretion of the student. Figure skates are not allowed for safety reasons.
  8. For their safety, no students are allowed to cross the neon yellow markers.

TEAM 1. THE PENNYWISE PIXIES & TEAM 2. THE GOOSEBERRY GRIFFINS: The puck drops at 9:30. Push the tiny thing towards the larger thing and try not to let anybody else get it!

RESULTS: Goals will be reported here.

SPECTATORS & BENCHES: Temporary benches (at times makeshift) have been set up on the shore, and all students and staff are welcome to cheer on their favourite team. Blankets and warming charms are recommended, and hot chocolate is available.

Each team has its own bench closest to the shore for players currently not on the ice.

AFTER THE GAME: Players have just enough time to stow their gear before filing into the cafeteria for lunch. Merciless gloating is basically tradition by this point.
