Lake Gooseberry Shinny, Game 1

Despite the balmy weather that allowed for yesterday's Polar Bear Plunge, the lake just north of the docks has been deemed solid enough (or near enough to solid) for the first game of Lake Gooseberry Shinny, the student-run intramural hockey team. Players and spectators both make their way down to the designated 'rink' where Mr. Thorn has delimited the safest ice with neon yellow markers.

As they arrive, each player receives their team assignment, a pinny in the colour of their team (yellow for the Pennywise Pixies and black for the Goosey Griffins), and their Choose-Your-Bruise badge. Every badge is in the shape of a circle except for Sybilla Borgin, whose badge is shaped like a birthday cake, and Ty Hawkeswood, whose badge is shaped like a pansy.

TEAM 1
THE PENNYWISE PIXIES

(Yellow pinnies)

#1 Park, Christopher (C)
#3 Borgin, Sybilla
#5 Decourt, Clementine
#7 Delgado, Sofia
#9 Hertz, Ryan
#11 Keating, Hazel
#13 Kramer, Levi
#15 Patterson, Casey
#17 Stoker, Rosemary
#19 Stoker, Sy
#21 Templeton, Laurel
#23 Davenport, Avery
#25 Morales-Tran, Estella
#27 Morales, Diego
#29 Alapi, Anuhea
#31 Hawkeswood, Ty
#33 May, Joanna
#35 Powers, Victoria
TEAM 2
THE GOOSEY GRIFFINS

(Black pinnies)

#2 Cunningham, Quinn (C)
#4 Fiori, Leo
#6 Gray, Henrietta
#8 Hale, Dahlia
#10 Sanchez, Olivia
#12 Gillis, Magdalen
#14 Ferris, Hayley
#16 Noble, Tess
#18 Vargas, Penelope
#20 Kim, Casper
#22 de Luca, Ursula
#24 Mae, Riley
#26 Honeychurch, Cecil
#28 St. Clair, Micah
#30 Chase, Will
#32 McBride, Jesse
#34 Fairchild, Marilyn

A red rectangle is charmed into the ice to show the rink's boundaries, and the goals are each two piles of snow connected by a thick blue line in the ice.

Quinn Cunningham gathers both teams together to explain the rules:

RULES
  1. No wands on the ice
  2. Players must abide by the Personal Contact Policies
  3. Any player found to be ignoring the badge system will be banned from the next game. If the player's disregard for the rules continues, the player will be banned from the league.
  4. Players are not allowed to administer contact beyond their own level. (ex. Green badges cannot check Red badges and vice-versa.)
  5. There are no positions or goalies.
  6. As the teams are so large this year, the game duration has been extended to two hours to allow each player ample time on the ice. Each player will spend at least 10 minutes on the bench (with 7–8 benched at a time).
  7. Helmets and mouthguards are mandatory for all players, any other padding is left to the discretion of the student. Figure skates are not allowed for safety reasons.
  8. For their safety, no students are allowed to cross the neon yellow markers.

TEAM 1. THE PENNYWISE PIXIES & TEAM 2. THE GOOSEBERRY GRIFFINS: The puck drops at 9:30. Push the tiny thing towards the larger thing and try not to let anybody else get it!

RESULTS: Goals will be reported here.

SPECTATORS & BENCHES: Temporary benches (at times makeshift) have been set up on the shore, and all students and staff are welcome to cheer on their favourite team. Blankets and warming charms are recommended, and hot chocolate is available.

Each team has its own bench closest to the shore for players currently not on the ice.

AFTER THE GAME: Players have just enough time to stow their gear before filing into the cafeteria for lunch. Merciless gloating is basically tradition by this point.

#26 Cecil Honeychurch

Name: Cecil Honeychurch
Play: Cecil has never really played competitive team sports, so he's a little nervous about this first game. But he'll do his best! His skating has improved quiet a bit, but the skills required for hockey are still fairly new to him (even with all those boot camps) and he doesn't seem to have it in him to get even orange-level rough with anyone very often. He'll mostly be playing defensively, but he's big enough that this might not be the worst thing for him to do?
Are you okay with being injured? Go for it.
Score: 5.

Diego's inevitably going to try to chit chat with Cecil and joke around with him during the game. This may have contributed to Cecil's lack of goals.

Cecil wouldn't have scored anyway, but he'll be very happy if Diego skates over to chit chat and joke with him. He'll also lose his motivation and his focus almost immediately. He's sorry, teammates, but things are a bit tense with his best friend right now and if he's up for any of that, Cecil not going to pass on it. Hi Diego!

(This is why these two can't play competitive sports.)

Hi Cecil! Diego is similarly starved for some (mostly) tension free time with Cecil, so before long it's like... game? What game?

"Tearing up the ice over here, Honeychurch?" Diego lazily skates around Cecil. Is this supposed to be shit talking the opposition? If so, it's pretty weak, and more just like teasingly complimenting him. "As you can see, I've made, like, ten goals already." He has not. Like, at all.

Chris, why did you ask him to play?

Cecil watches Diego skate around him as much as he can without actually turning to follow him and laughs warmly, "Not even close. But ten goals, huh? You're really on fire today. What's your secret?"

Put them on the cheer squad where they belong.

Diego comes to a (moderately) graceful stop in front of Cecil. "I'm just a natural, apparently," he explains as he tries to lean on his hockey stick. Which, as it turns out, is a bad idea. He avoids falling, but succeeds looking really unsteady for a second. Hurriedly, he raises a hand in a very clear NO I'VE GOT IT DON'T HELP ME gesture because touching Cecil still feels mostly off-limits.

"Yeah, sorry, I suck really bad at this game. Surprise. I don't even know where the little thingy is right now."

Chris is probably shouting in the distance about Diego getting his ass in the game

The uplifted hand is all that keeps Cecil from coming to Diego's aid and even then it's a close call. His lips thin worriedly until his friend is upright again; then he exhales softly and smiles. "The puck?" he suggests and shrugs, "I...suck at this game too? But we're new. That's to be expected, isn't it? Chris said it's about having fun, anyway."

"The puck!" Diego declares, the word coming back to him as Cecil says it. "You're probably right, but I'm only ever going to be good at like, three things. And this game's way violent. At least Quidditch doesn't let you tackle anyone." Despite Cecil's claims this is 'just for fun', Diego can hear Chris shouting in the distance. Diego bites his lip. Talking to Cecil has been so loaded lately, and they're having fun...

"I'm going to pretend I don't understand what he's saying for a second. They don't need me anyway," he says guiltily. He then waves to Chris, and says quiet enough that only Cecil will hear it anyway: "Hi, Chris. Sorry, Chris."

"You're good at lots of things, Diego," Cecil corrects him, giving a small shake of his head as hes smiles, "But....I'm not sure I'd know what to make of a Diego that was good at violent sports, anyway, to be honest." He's on the verge of saying more when he hears Chris too and he makes a slightly guilty face as he glances briefly in the Coppertale's direction.

Diego's plan to pretend he doesn't understand Chris, though, transforms Cecil's guilty face with a small smile that he doesn't seem able to help. "We could just skate around? Think that would convince him?" He seems to be joking. Mostly.

Cecil's small smile gets a huge grin out of Diego.

"Let's do it. This will give us a few extra minutes of plausible deniability. Maybe Levi will pick another fight with him if we're lucky." Diego takes off, gliding past Cecil and just barely bumping into his arm with an impersonal, safe elbow. "Orange rules!"
