PATRONUS STUDY SESSION

PATRONUS STUDY SESSION

Ms. Lilywhite has been teaching a section on casting Patronuses. Every year, she allows non-DADA students to attend extra study sessions she holds after dinner, because she believes a well-formed Patronus is an important life skill. It’s… not, probably, but who’s going to argue with her?

HOW THIS WORKS

If your character attends these sessions or takes DADA, they will at least learn what their patronus will be and will get a partial formation. The mods will roll to see if your character can cast a successful full-bodied patronus.

Occlumency students are presumed to already be well-versed with this spell, as it requires emotional control and self-awareness, which are invaluable skills in Occlumency, especially if you plan on becoming an Auror. Unless you choose otherwise, all Occlumency students automatically succeed, or can already cast the charm.

Occlumency students: Automatic success.
Seniors in DADA: 75% success.
Seniors not in DADA: 50% success.
Juniors in DADA: 65% success.
Juniors not in DADA: 40% success.
Sophomores in DADA: 55% success.
Sophomores not in DADA: 30% success.

Fill out this form if your character takes Occlumency or attends the extra study sessions:
Name:
Year: Sophomore/Junior/Senior
Patronus Form: It can change from the last time we asked you, but this will be your official “canon” answer.
Why?: What does this animal mean, or why is it significant to them?
Their happy memory: What memory finally worked for them?
Their attempt: Any other notes on how it went for them?
Are they in DADA or Occlumency?: This contributes to the likelihood of their success.

Cricket Quayle

Name: Cricket Quayle
Year: Senior
Patronus Form: Red Wolf
Why?: Wolves are social creatures, intensely bonded to their pack. Highly intelligent and intuitive, they are both precise in their habits and heavily reliant on their instincts. Seeing a wolf in a dream can indicate that you're feeling vulnerable or that you feel you have overexposed yourself emotionally.

Red wolves, in particular, are native to the South. There are only about 300 left in the world, which reminded me of pure bloods. Interbreeding with coyotes is considered a threat to the species, which I thought was a kinda funny analogy to blood purity concerns. Red wolves are less social than grey wolves, but more social than coyotes. They are also slighter and smaller than grey wolves and, of course, red.
Their happy memory: She shuffles through scenes with her family, her friends both back home and at Gooseberry, academic and social milestones, etc. She finally stops and concentrates on a specific memory with Maggie & Nate, just before they left for summer break last year. Cricket and Nate are fishing in the stream that runs through Gooseberry, as Maggie lounges on the banks nearby. As she closes her eyes, she can feel the sun on her face and the squish of mud between her toes. She can hear the sound of water lapping against rocks and the whizz of fishing line unspooling as she casts. She feels calm and happy and safe.

Their attempt: Cricket has been able to produce a patronus for awhile, though it is always difficult for her. She probably would not be able to produce one under duress, but in a calm and supportive environment she can almost always manage a strong manifestation. It takes her a long time to clear her mind of distractions and focus in on a happy memories.
Are they in DADA or Occlumency?: Both.
