PATRONUS STUDY SESSION

PATRONUS STUDY SESSION

Ms. Lilywhite has been teaching a section on casting Patronuses. Every year, she allows non-DADA students to attend extra study sessions she holds after dinner, because she believes a well-formed Patronus is an important life skill. It’s… not, probably, but who’s going to argue with her?

HOW THIS WORKS

If your character attends these sessions or takes DADA, they will at least learn what their patronus will be and will get a partial formation. The mods will roll to see if your character can cast a successful full-bodied patronus.

Occlumency students are presumed to already be well-versed with this spell, as it requires emotional control and self-awareness, which are invaluable skills in Occlumency, especially if you plan on becoming an Auror. Unless you choose otherwise, all Occlumency students automatically succeed, or can already cast the charm.

Occlumency students: Automatic success.
Seniors in DADA: 75% success.
Seniors not in DADA: 50% success.
Juniors in DADA: 65% success.
Juniors not in DADA: 40% success.
Sophomores in DADA: 55% success.
Sophomores not in DADA: 30% success.

Fill out this form if your character takes Occlumency or attends the extra study sessions:
Name:
Year: Sophomore/Junior/Senior
Patronus Form: It can change from the last time we asked you, but this will be your official “canon” answer.
Why?: What does this animal mean, or why is it significant to them?
Their happy memory: What memory finally worked for them?
Their attempt: Any other notes on how it went for them?
Are they in DADA or Occlumency?: This contributes to the likelihood of their success.

Quinn Cunningham

Name: Quinn Cunningham
Year: Senior
Patronus Form: Coyote
Why?: The coyote is a trickster and a clown who doesn't hesitate to point out the humour (or folly) in a situation. When he imparts wisdom (more through his actions than his words) it can be obscured by the playful delivery. He's adaptable, resourceful in his surroundings, and devoted to family. There's a danger for the coyote to gravitate too close to his darker side, which with Quinn relates to her tendency to envelope herself in pressure and then lash out at those around her.
Their happy memory: The first time she was able to skate on Lake Gooseberry.

For the first couple of years she was trying to cast the Patronus with her memory of getting into Gooseberry because of how beneficial the school was going to be for her career as a Healer — it just made sense. Before Gooseberry, however, Quinn spent years playing competitive minor league hockey; her move to Utah meant giving up all aspirations of playing professionally (and she was promising player), as well as uprooting herself from both her teammates and her family back in Hamilton. She realized last year that getting into Gooseberry was a good memory, but one too bittersweet to help her cast the Patronus.

The first time Quinn skated on the Lake was in the beginning of Freshman year when she was still feeling lonely and vulnerable from her big move. It was the first time she felt like herself since beginning at the school and it helped her realize that she wasn't so much quitting her old life as she was building it into something different. No bitter, just sweet — and reassuring.
Their attempt: Good. Determined. With non-DADA students around she might even be a little competitive; she insists she's "motivated."
Are they in DADA or Occlumency?: Only DADA.

The memory pertains to mod-approved modifications to Quinn's history I've been meaning to make but are not yet reflected in her profile, FYI. I tried to turn the coyote stuff away from Appropriationsvillle but it was really hard not to write the coyote as Coyote the figure and the pronouns and ahhhh. I tried to write about just coyotes in general, I gave up, I'm sorry. :(

Also hi I always write way too much how are you today

It's okay. I did have the forethought to incorporate that his patronus does symbolize that he's getting softer. And then I devoted the rest of my thinking time to finding the most adorable deer possible which I don't regret.

I know more coyotes are moving into cities, but is anybody going to stop this madness?!
