ACCIDENTAL AMORTENTIA

ACCIDENTAL AMORTENTIA

At breakfast, there are pots of magically warmed relaxation tea that students are welcome to try. Apparently, it’s the project of a few freshmen Potions whiz kids, and they say they’re developing magical aromatherapy by way of herbal tea. Everyone agrees the tea smells amazing, although oddly, they all seem to think it smells completely different. Oh no.

The tea has been laced with small amounts of Amortentia. All characters who drank it become infatuated with a nearby classmate after a 15–20 minute delay. The freshmen were actually testing a time-delay version of Amortentia, and have used the upperclassmen as guinea pigs. They are in sooooooo much trouble.

The effects of the potion come on fast and without warning after the 15–20 minute delay. The person who drank the potion appears "pale and sickly" and becomes obsessed with the object of their affections, speaking of them as though "hit by a ray of purest sunlight." They may also act excited or dangerously unstable towards others.

Teachers are scrambling to maintain order, and all students are asked to remain in the lodge while this situation is investigated. They’ll be mostly trying to make sure no students under the influence of the potion get, uh, too carried away. The lodge is littered with deliriously happy couples, students sobbing over their rejection, and jealous arguing.

Students who took Amortentia will remain in the lodge supervised overnight. Anyone who didn’t will be told to return to their cabins for a remarkably prefect- and staff-free evening (unless your house prefects didn't drink the tea, in which case, try not to cause trouble!).

THE RULES
  • If necessary, communicate with your partner OOC to make sure everyone's comfortable!
  • Please keep things PG-13! Affected characters will not have any opportunities to have sex.
  • Teachers will break up any pairs getting too hot and heavy. If necessary, you can say a teacher separated characters (without getting mod approval first), or request staff intervention.
  • All teachers and staff are in the lodge maintaining order. Your characters may be able to sneak into an empty classroom, but there is a strong chance of getting caught.
  • Classes are cancelled for the whole day.
  • All affected students are spending the entire day and night in the lodge. Sleeping bags are provided. If staff believes two students might attempt to canoodle, they will be forced to sleep in separate rooms.
  • If your character is not on the list and you want to say they drank the tea, feel free! We just won't be randomizing any matches for you, but you can plot with other players for one. :)

» Morning: A number of the students help themselves to the tea that's been set out. Within twenty minutes, something seems off, as your fellows suddenly grow unusually affectionate.

» Afternoon: Things are in full swing now, with staff, prefects and volunteer students trying to keep the peace.

» Evening/Night: The teachers are just hoping all of this wore out the students, because it sure wore them out. Sleeping bags have been conjured for everyone staying the night (characters affected by Amortentia may not leave), and the teachers are taking shifts to watch the students.

» Elsewhere: If your character did not drink the potion, they're free to go elsewhere on campus.

Saira takes the tea not out of any actual desire for it but in order to shoo the obnoxious little freshman hawking it away more quickly. She's deep in the middle of a Hermeticism paper and she has no time to socialize, let alone cater to experimental children, however much she approves of the scientific method (which this is, for the record, absolutely not, and she would say so if she wasn't busy.)

She drinks the stuff absently and without noticing much about it, hence her complete disregard for the telltale scent.

She also doesn't notice anything amiss until there's a bit of a ruckus from Cameron Carney's table: he's being obnoxiously flamboyant again. She rolls her eyes and looks up long enough to sigh and assess the necessity of telling him to keep it down-

-only to realize that he's not so bad after all, is he? Really, there's no reason to hush him. He's...he's amusing. And she needed a study break, anyway.

Saira laughs at his antics. This is new. New enough that she closes her spread of books a bit absently and gets up, telling herself that she's just going over there to ask him politely to keep it down.

She's not. She ends up on the fringes of his group, watching him with a smile. Very peculiar, and if she was able to think about it much she would realize that, but her head feels a little fuzzy and light and she's happy. Watching him is making her happy.

Cameron doesn't like to get up early in the morning, but when he does, he is here for the food. Gooseberry has the best food, aside from his mama's cooking, so he piles his plate up with pancakes, biscuits and gravy, bacon, cantaloupe, and grits. Twenty minutes ago, he was sluggish and sleepy, even whiny, but now he's whistling a jaunty tune.

He takes a seat with some friends, talking animatedly about the upcoming play (he is SO EXCITED, Y'ALL, WHO WANTS TO RUN LINES??) and whatever else occurs to him. He finishes his food and steals a few round fruits - an apple and two oranges - and starts to juggle. He gets bored of that, however, and goes back for a second round of food. He's a growing boy, after all!

Tea? What tea?? He didn't wake up this early for tea, he woke up for BISCUITS AND SAUSAGE GRAVY. Therefore, he totally ignores the freshmen trying to force tea on them. When they persist, he starts singing "Tea for Two" loudly, until it makes them go away.

It takes him a few moments to notice that while the group lost the freshmen, they picked up a junior! "Howdy, Saira! Pull a seat on up."

Saira came over here for a reason. She did. She's sure she did. Only now she can't quite remember what that reason was, because Cameron is very distracting, isn't he. And sweet. It's sweet of him to offer her a seat like that.

Smiling the smile of a woman besotted, she nods and pulls up a seat.

"Hello, Cameron," she says sweetly. Sweetly. Even with the Potions effect still setting in and getting stronger, she realizes that's strange for her, and her brow furrows in mild concern.

Saira is acting a little odd, but Cameron doesn't put much thought into it after noticing it. He likes being liked, after all, and she certainly seems to like him much more this morning than she has... basically any other day. That just means he's finally winning her over.

"How are you this fine..." he trails off, noticing two people making out a table over, "... weird day?"

"I'm-" Saira genuinely stops to think about that. "Good. I'm very good. Thank you for asking." That's very kind of him.

She scoots her chair a little closer to Cameron's.

Well, hello there. Cameron never really thought about it before, because she usually looked at him like you'd look at a toddler covered in oreo crumbs, but Saira is pretty... well, pretty. So this is an okay development. "Would you... like some biscuits and gravy?" he offers, gesturing to his plate, "They're my favorite."

"I can't," Saira says apologetically. Like, genuinely apologetically, not with the tinge of sarcasm she usually applies when 'apologizing' fir such things. "Pork. But that's very sweet of you to offer."

She smiles again, momentary concern forgotten.

Cameron furrows his eyebrows for a minute then says, "Ooooh. The sausage in the gravy." He wasn't a huge fan of sausage, just the gravy made from it, so he'd kind of forgotten the gravy even had meat in it (though that's what made it so delicious). "Sorry," he says (because he mispoke or because she can't eat such a delicious meal? who knows, maybe both) "They might have gravy up there without sausage in it. You can make it with bacon t-- Wait, shoot, that's pork too. Okay but, you can make gravy without meat, it's just not as good. Or, I guess you could make steak gravy or chicken gravy?" He realizes he's rambling and stops for a moment.

"... Okay, but have you ever tried grits? No pork involved!"

"No," Saira admits, head tilting as she considers. Cameron is probably right, she concludes. She could eat it. "I would like to try. If you think it's good."

"I like it. It's, uh, corn. Like ground up corn. And I put butter and cheese and salt and pepper in mine, if those are all things you can eat?" he says, cautious now. He knows the pork thing is religious, but she could also be like Trixie and be allergic to life, and he doesn't want to kill any pretty girls. "I like it. My mama used to always make it like this for me when I was a kid."

"I can eat anything that isn't pork," Saira says, leaning a little closer. "Unless it's been improperly slaughterex, or- but that's not something we should talk about. What else did your...mama make you?" She just wants to hear about him.

"How do you know if it was or not if you didn't do it yourself-- Wait, you know what, that's probably not the best mealtime conversation," he replies. "Oh well, she's best at southern stuff, like cornbread, beans, and greens - that kinda thing. Turnip greens. Have you ever had polk salad, like the Elvis song, Polk Salad Annie?"

Poor Saira - Cameron loves to talk about himself, and also his mama.

"What kind of stuff do you eat at home?"

Saira has no idea what polk salad is, but she's positive it's wonderful. She'll have to look into it. Maybe she can learn to make it...

"We eat many things," she says, waving her hand as if it doesn't matter. It doesn't. Cameron's preferences are far more important.
