JUNIOR MONTHLY BONDING: November

JUNIOR BONDING

Mr. Hightower and Mr. Oakes have come together to combine communication skills and explosions, their favorite things respectively.

Each pair of students is given a strange device with a multitude of panels, buttons, wires and switches, as well as a weighty manual of obtuse instructions. Throughout the room are tables with curtains strung across them, which when the student is sitting, reach about shoulder-height.

One student (the Expert) is given the manual, the other (the Defuser) is given the device. They sit facing one another on opposite sides of the curtain. Oakes delightedly explains that the device in their hands is a bomb. Well, a fake bomb. The manual contains instructions on how to diffuse the bomb, and the Expert must guide their partner in defusing the "bomb." Everyone has one hour for today's bonding activity.

THE RULES
  • No peeking. There are charms that alert Hightower and Oakes of cheaters, and it gets you disqualified.
  • Each level of the game has a certain number of mistakes you're allowed before the bomb goes off. It starts with four strikes, and then if you succeed it goes down to three, then two, then one.
  • Each attempt gets five minutes before the timer on the bomb expires and it blows up.
  • When the bomb "explodes," it beeps loudly and blasts confetti at the person holding it.
  • Each time the bomb explodes, Oakes or Hightower will come by and magically reset it with a whole new set of panels, buttons and wires, so it's a fresh experience.
  • It is recommended that students switch off duties with each attempt, i.e. trading Expert and Defuser roles. However, if a team decides it's more efficient to stick to the same roles, that's fine. If there's more than two in a team, one person will be the Defuser and the others will be the Experts.
  • The goal is to make it through the four levels of the game. If your team succeeds, they will win a metal pin that declares them a bomb disposal expert. Oakes will salute them every time he sees a student wearing it.
The junior pairings are as follows:

Sybilla & Sylvester
Clementine & Avery
Bailey & Olivia
Cameron & Dominic
Casper & Riley
Marilyn & Harriet
Ursula & Reid Chloe & Veronica Rosemary & Coralee
Holden & Sofia Adeline & Katerina & Jacob Kurt & Saira
Reece & Casey

OOC: Yes, this game is based on Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes. You can watch this video (warning: swearing) for an example of the manual and the device in use, and an approximation of what your character will experience (warning: probably swearing).

In order to qualify for a win, please fill out the following:
Character:
Performance: How they did during the game. How are their communication skills? Do they take and/or give instructions well? Were they the person with the bomb or the manual? Do they keep their cool under pressure?
Score: Estimate on a scale of 1-10 how well they did.

Everyone is given points calculated from their score and RNG, and how well your team did is the total of everyone's points. If your team score is 10 points or more, you've passed the first level. 20 points, you've passed the second; 30, you've passed the third; and 40, you've beaten the game and get the prize. SEE HERE FOR A MOD UPDATE.

2016-11-18 11:59 am UTC (link)
Character: Reid Wainwright
Performance: On the plus side, Reid is calm under pressure and takes direction well. On the other hand, his communication skills are atrocious and when he's the Expert... I'm sorry, Ursula. I'm so sorry. He also never questions the directions given, even if he has doubts about them.
Score: 4? It's better than last month...

Reid & Ursula
[info]cecaelian
2016-11-18 12:42 pm UTC (link)
Character: Ursula de Luca
Performance: Ursula on Defuser duty while Reid is on Expert duty is a completely disasterous combination. Just... the Worst. She takes instruction well, but only if it's actually given and as the timer ticks down her questions, though very pointed, will get more rapidfire and anxious. She's also.... not going to be thrilled if she gets a face full of confetti. And for both of their sakes, she's not going to let there be a repeat performance of those role assignments.

Ursula excels as an Expert, though. Once she's had a sample of the Defuser side and has the manual in her hands, she's able to visualize what they're working with well enough to use the manual to ask precise questions to lead them through the activity. She considers the activity to actually be a Useful Test of Skills For The Real World (as opposed to archery, ugh), so she'll be patient and persistent about continuing the activity through the allotted hour or until they pass.

She is, admittantly, giving Reid the occasional odd side-eye thanks to the earlier Divination activity.
Score: 9, but only when not taking the initial disaster combination into consideration...

Ursula thanks Reid for putting up with so many confetti explosions and tries really hard to not look amused by all of this. She'll help him pick confetti out of his hair.

The manual may have made her a lot more confident about the instructions she was giving, but clearly she could use some work on the actual interpretation. Or speed of that interpretation. Or any number of things because damn she clearly got a terrible RNG. But they made it through three rounds and Reid did really well and at least they aren't Riley and Casper, so it qualifies as a win.

2016-11-18 12:07 pm UTC (link)
Character: Riley Stamper
Performance: Oh my god, this is not going to go well. Like, it can’t. Riley does not do a good job of describing things, because she honestly does not care and there’s, just, like, so much to read and describe. And when she’s the Defuser, if Casper gets the least bit frustrated with her, she would rather make fun of him than actually start to listen. Because bitchiness is an easier emotion than confusion, so WHY EVEN TRY?
Score: 3. I’m being so generous here. I’m sorry, Casper, SHE IS LITERALLY THE WORST.

[info]frozen_haymaker
2016-11-18 12:13 pm UTC (link)
Character: Olivia Sanchez
Performance: She takes this SO seriously, like they're diffusing a real bomb but she also talks fast under pressure. She can take direction well and she has a knack for memory. She's also not shy or withdrawn and she IS coppertale so she can give direction well too. She doesn't get snippy or frustrated. She also insists they diffuse the bomb the entire allotted time they got.

Character: Rosemary Stoker
Performance: Welcome to Probable Disaster #2. Rosy stubbornly refused to stop trying to defuse this stupid thing and insisted they keep trying until the hour was up. Every time she gets a face full of confetti, she gets more frustrated, and more stubborn, and lololol please let this hour be over already, oh god. When she’s the Expert, there’s a lot of, “No, you need to do this. No, I said THIS. Oh my god, how is this so hard? It says right here, just DO THE THING.”
Score: 7. You probably like almost definitely lost points for not bonding, girls.

Sybilla & Sy
[info]sibyls
2016-11-18 12:30 pm UTC (link)
Character: Sybilla Borgin
Performance: On one hand, Sylla takes direction well, keeps composed under pressure, and is concise and analytical when giving direction. ON THE OTHER HAND, Sy makes her weirdly silly, she's not a huge fan of group work, and can't be bothered with muggle technology like wires and switches and things she can't just dismantle with her wand. Plus she likes the glitter explosions and giggles every time it happens. Yes she may cause this intentionally for her own amusement. It's all quite silly and she can't take it seriously. If this was a one-player exercise she would be intense and focused about it, but she not so secretly enjoys watching people lash out. SORRY SY.

Character: Addy Foster-Hayes
Performance: Addy likes this kind of game.Even if there is not the egg crown this time. She's actually not terrible at following instructions, and is able to keep calm while giving her own. It's just when she doesn't understand how to explain things that she gets kind of caught up. There's a lot of talking with her hands, which helps nothing. She stays focused if her teammates do, but isn't really one to drag people back on track if not.

Character: Dominic Tremblay
Performance: Dominic is smart, logical, and good at factual and strategical subjects (think Hermeticism, DADA etc). He stays cool under external pressure so would have been OK good at both sides of the task, though he would have felt more confident at just doing the damn thing by himself, ha ha. He would have asked Cameron for clarifying questions where necessary and assuming Cam wasn't OTT and acted like he didn't want to do this. Dom would communicate with him well.

Saira and Kurt
[info]sairaza
2016-11-18 03:46 pm UTC (link)
Character: Saira Raza
Performance: Saira has got this. She has GOT THIS. This is not intimidating to her at all. She would much prefer to be the Expert, but she is willing to switch off at least once to see how they function best. She is very, very good at synthesizing and interpreting important information out of weighty, obtuse textbooks- it is practically her soulmate, doing this- so she's basically the perfect partner on that end, though she may be a little curt (heh, sorry,) and impatient if Kurt fucks up too much or needs things repeated. As far as being the Defuser goes, she's less good at taking instructions than she is at giving them, but she does know how to listen and do things exactly as instructed the first time without needing repeats.
Score: 9. Could be a little more patient, but this bonding activity plays very much to her strengths.

Performance: Chloe is... kind of terrible at this, sorry. The ticking clock makes her exceptionally nervous, and unless her partner is very gentle and encouraging, it will snowball. CASEY'S NOT A TEAM PLAYER.

Casey is shit at being the Expert. He reads the instructions slowly. He might get distracted and forget a key sentence. He reads some directions wrong by accident (but will never admit it, and instead insist to Reece that no it was right there or no you were the one that fucked up). If Reece makes a mistake, he mocks Reece.

He's better at being the Defuser because he's much better working with his hands, but if he thinks Reece is reading too slowly he'll get pushy. If Casey makes a mistake, he will still lay the blame on Reece.

Score: 3. (6 for ability, -50% for poor partnership skills.) Sorry Reece.
