Ash sat in his favorite lawn chair, a baseball cap seated firmly on his head to keep the sun out of his eyes. He held a fishing pole in one hand, the base resting on his thigh. A vast lake at his feet lapped gently at his toes. A lure floated on the water's surface, ready to signal the presence of a fish nibbling on the bait. To his right, kneeling by his feet, Christy Brinkley wore only an abbreviated bikini and a knowing smile as she offered him a beer.
"Thanks, doll," Ash said, taking it.
To his left, Mary Ann from Gilligan's Island, dressed in denim short shorts and a tank top, shot a jealous glance at Christy and raised her hands, offering him a coconut cream pie. It smelled delicious.
"He doesn't want your stupid pie," Christy snarled.
"That's not what he said last night," Mary Ann said.
"He was settling. Now he's got a real woman to keep him warm."
"Girls..."
"Oh!" Mary Ann. "You...you...hussy!"
Christy snatched up an empty beer bottle and flung it at Mary Ann.
Mary Ann straight-armed the pie into Christy's face.
Christy gasped, then shrieked in rage, and launched herself at Mary Ann. They felt to the ground in a clinch, punching and kicking and trash-talking one another. They rolled from the shore into the lake and back again, getting soaked and covered in mud.
Ash loved every minute of it. He settled in to watch. He took a sip of his beer--and choked--
"Gah!" Ash muttered, turning his head back and forth, fruitlessly try to escape the rasping tongue of a cat.
A cat?
Ash's eyes sprang open. He found himself looking up at a wooden ceiling. A tiger crouched over him, licking his face. Ash bellowed--to scare off the tiger, not from fear, of course. He flung himself away.
He rolled off the bed and fell to the floor, but not before cracking his forehead on the edge of the bedside table on the way down. He saw stars for a moment. Never mind that. He scrambled to his feet, scanning the environment for threats. Bed, table, desk, chair. Built-in shelves on one wall. A window. Two doors.
And a tiger! Well, okay, a tiger cub. A pretty scrawny tiger cub, actually. More like the size of a housecat. He was pretty sure tiger cubs were bigger than that. It was sitting on the bed he'd so abruptly vacated. As he watched, it opened and then folded its wings. It's tiger-striped, feathered wings.
He was almost certain tigers didn't generally have wings. It was damned cute, though. He wondered who it belonged to, and then decided it didn't matter. It belonged with him now. He nodded to himself. Yeah, anyone who thought different was in for a beating.
Ash sat on the bed again. He scratched the--what the hell, the tiger--between its ears. It liked that. "What shall I call you?" Ash asked.
My name is Temujin.
"You talk too. Ooo-kay," Ash said. He could handle that. He'd experienced weirder, god knows.
"Temujin, huh?" Ash shrugged. "Okay. You know anything about where we are?" Ash glanced around the room again. "Because this sure as hell ain't the four star hotel I went to sleep in last night. And you, cute as you may be, are not the sweet young thing who was with me at the time."
You are on the Goddess' Island, Temujin said.
That got Ash's attention. "Island? I'm on an island?" He sprang to his feet and walked over to the window. Pushing the curtains aside revealed a view of several wooden buildings. Cottages, by the look of them. The sun hadn't risen yet, but light was starting to fill the sky. There were lights shining from one or two windows. "How the hell did I get here?"
The Goddess brought you here. She has need of heroes. You have been honored.
Ash let the curtain drop and turned to glare at the tiger over his shoulder. "I've been kidnapped? Where is this so-called Goddess? I've got a bone to pick with her!" He stomped over and threw open the nearest door. It revealed a bathroom.
Everywhere and nowhere, Temujin replied serenely. As befits a goddess.
Ash stomped over to the other door. He grabbed the knob--and then froze, staring at the hand gripping the knob. His right hand. His flesh and blood right hand. He'd lost it thirty years ago. He'd cut it off himself, with a chainsaw, to save himself from demonic possession.
Ash raised the hand to examine it. It looked real. He flexed it. It felt real. In the interim he'd owned and used a variety of prosthetics. But now he had his hand back. He ran the fingers of his left hand over the skin of his right. Smooth as a baby's bottom.
The Goddess does not only take, Temujin said. She also provides.
"Yeah, I see that." He felt an unfamiliar sensation, in his chest and in his eyes. He shook it off, shook his head to clear it, wiped at his eyes with his left hand, wiped the tears away on his jeans. Nobody saw anything. Nobody could prove anything. Except Temujin, but Ash knew he wouldn't tell.
"Maybe...maybe I can deal with this goddess. Maybe this won't be so bad." He made a fist of his right hand, reveling in the ability to do so. "But first, I'm gonna take a look around."
