Okay. So. We're getting a few more scientists here, so I think now is the perfect time to get into the specifics of the Project. (This is completely and utterly coincidental with the fact that my genetics class talked about the Human Genome Project today.)

Anywho. Technically, our scientists aren't really conducting a "Genome Project". They're conducting an "Epigenome Project". Directly quoting a PBS informative video, a genome is like a Human "book of life". It contains all the information about the collective you. Now, let's consider a genome as a computer. Just raw materials and chips, etc. The epigenome would be Windows 7. It tells the computer what to do, how to work, when to work, and so on.

There's little "switches" on the genome that are linked to different things. Diseases, predispositions, intellect, and a whole host of things are all controlled by the epigenome and it's completely the scientific theory that the epigenome can be manipulated with different drugs and factors. (Chemotherapy is a good example of this.)

Basically, the scientists gave Patients 0-8 a drug that modified their epigenome to turn on a switch for whatever power they have. I know it's grasping at straws, because it's highly unlikely that we have a gene that controls superhuman anything. But it's interesting, I think. And I mod this game. So that's what happened.

As for the adopted children, if the mother volunteered before the end of her pregnancy, then drugs were injected during a routine visit to the OBGYN. If the child was already born before entering the program, then the scientists took the same steps as with Patients 0-8, but with less dosages.

If the children are those of scientists, then they injected the mother directly, though it should not have modified her epigenome. However, if down the line we want to add some fun to the plot and have some of the mothers who gave birth directly to their children start to experience symptoms, then that's perfectly okay with me. But ask first. =]
